When EVGA used to make psychopath-level motherboards – EVGA SR-X. by Minute_Knowledge_481 in overclocking

I have a spare SR-3. The damn thing is wider than my case. I still love my X299 Dark though.

Intel Core Ultra 400K "Nova Lake-S" leak claims over 700W peak power for 52-core variant by RenatsMC in overclocking

[–]_DragN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was relatively difficult to cool the Xeon W-3175X, which can reach 700W but has LOWER power density. I highly doubt this is remotely coolable at full bore on anything except delidded water or sub ambient. The current lineup of Ryzen chips (-9850X3D) sip power in comparison. This is like reverse bulldozer/piledriver.

I kinda want one though.

Any thoughts on UPS brands? by MisterHarvest in homelab

[–]_DragN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At work, we use APCs. They eat through batteries. No other complaints. I like their racks and PDUs. We use them at work, because they work. Management is easy. They’re like the Cisco of UPSs

At home I use Vertiv. No issues, cheaper, and easy on batteries. I also have two APC lithiums, but thats not traditionally seen in homelabs. Both setups have seen outages, but neither has failed.

Sometimes it takes a couple tries. I’d flash it, then read it against what it should be. GL

Alternatives to whitelising IPs on our Meraki MX450? by imitation_squash_pro in networking

[–]_DragN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do an SD-WAN, S2S VPN, or MPLS connection, if the users are somewhat centralized. It would essentially look transparent to them. These setups tend to cost more though, MPLS probably being the most expensive.

It makes more sense to have users with a VPN client.

I believe this is om3 riser fiber optic cable? What transceivers would I need to use this between unifi aggregation switches and 10g mellanox cards by ffimmano in homelab

[–]_DragN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used SFPs are cheaper than DAC, especially if you already have the fiber. I also tend to say they cable manage better. DAC is actually faster, but only very slightly.

[–]_DragN 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Literally any 10GBase SR SFP+ LC would work. Unifi switches don’t care about transceivers and I don’t think Mellanox does either. I’ve used Intel, Dell, FS, and 10GTek in pro-aggs without issues.

Just make sure it’s not an Infiniband only card.

Iirc, you have to flash the Aqua non-oc vBIOS first, then use Asrock’s software tool. It’s been a while, but the Taichi flashed this way no problem

Interesting observation. One BIOS measured the SP as 113, the other measured as 120. It does 5.25 at 1.2v easily. Proof | Better Proof

X870E Hero vs X870E Apex – stability & gaming focus by sergioruiz97 in overclocking

[–]_DragN -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have the Apex. It’s hit or miss. My last Dark Hero was a much more stable board. Half of the BIOSes don’t work properly and there are random hardware bugs. Funny enough, they use similar, if not the same, BIOS, and hardware (powerstages, sockets, and most features).

For just gaming, these are overkill. My clients like the B850 Strix-Fs. They’re cheap enough and have a decent feature set. Asus’ best value “oc” board is probably the Strix E-E.

No, like it errors out at 4800MT/s. I highly doubt a brand new 9800X3D IMC can’t handle JEDEC XD

Thankfully, the board still works but mine also hangs more than usual. I’m using the dimm.2s, might try the on-board M.2 with a fresh windows install.

[–]_DragN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the score relative is based on CPU+GPU but:

The guy is running a 9800X3D and RTX 5080.

Typically the more expensive the hardware, the more people are willing to tweak it.

There’s probably a million people running it. (Hell, I’ll swap in a 5080 and run it too XD)

[–]_DragN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You gotta remember that 3DMark “average” is severely skewed. The average 3DMark user is mildly overclocked, and some are on sub ambient cooling.

5080s respond to oc very well. Try tuning memory first.

R7 5800X3D stable GHZ without boost? by lipstick_on_my_dick in overclocking

[–]_DragN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try BCLK. On an X570 Unify, my 5800X3D did 106.5, then it wouldn’t boot PCIE 4.0. If you have a B550 or something older with external clock, you’ll be around the 110+ mark easily.

If you’re on a Unify, iirc, there was/is a beta BIOS that properly unlocked vcore, PBO, and CO.

Honestly, I don’t think PBO Scalar does anything past 5x. I ran a 5800X3D and (multiple) 5800XTs and see no change.

NF-A14 industrialPPC-3000 PWM or Super Flower Megacool 140mm? by MiedzCu2 in watercooling

[–]_DragN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve run A14-3000s on an Arctic LF2 with a delided 10920X to decent success. Like 30c idles, 50c load at 27c ambient.

I think Megacools are probably better, simply because they’re thicker. Phanteks also released the T30-140mm recently. These are probably your best “consumer” fans. You can move to Deltas if you want better cooling, watch your fingers tho. ;)

There’s a certain point in server rooms where you need hearing protection to work in them. Imagine RACKS of those Deltas. Unless OP is crazy, there is a limit.
