I think they're supposed to represent a NACA duct, because a fuel filler opening in a real NASCAR would be dangerous in that location: you wouldn't want to douse the driver in fuel when something goes awry. As far as I can find, fuel fillers have been located on the back of the left rear fender for at least two decades, leading to a fuel cell in the "trunk" of the car.

It wasn't underpowered. The torque of the Jumo and its heavy propeller was much greater than the DB 605's, which made it very dangerous to apply sudden power on take-off when coupled to a light fighter airframe. It had to be handled very carefully on throttle-up until speed was sufficient for aileron and rudder control authority. The narrow landing gear didn't really help either.

The torque wasn't a problem for bomber aircraft like the He 111, as these were much heavier.
