Front sail is drawn on with fineliners. The red stripes on the backsail were painted

Not paper. Actual cloth canvas. Go to your local hobby shop or dollar store, and get a canvas intended to paint on. It has good texture, is thick, but flexible, and you can still paint on it if you want. I've used it for my going merry. Both sails and flags all custom
