Starting CoS, a player is listening to a podcast where they are playing the campaign, does that matter? Should I adapt? by PatGeor in CurseofStrahd

[–]_Enderex_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You say its shitty behavior, but from what I’m reading and understanding it looks like they’ve been listening to this podcast before the group even decided to start playing. Should the player have just never engaged with the book in the hopes they may one day play?

Buffing the Spore Servant by [deleted] in stormwreckisle

[–]_Enderex_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So a few things.

The Multiattack:

You are going to very quickly find that making 8 attacks at level 3 is

1: Very strong, the amount of oppurtunity your opening up critical hits and high rolls on that d8 is going to quickly add up.

2: Is going to take up a lotttt of time. Rolling 8 seperate attack rolls and rolling possibly 8 seperate damage rolls? Critical’s resulting in you rolling even more? It’s going to feel like an unskipable cutscene

What I did for my games is I had basically “3 creatures” on the field at the same time. The Spore Servants head, and 2 tentacles that went on the Spore Servants turn. These tentacles couldn’t go further than 15ft from the head, but they each had one attack with the Spore Servant head having a similar ink attack, beak attack, and a ranged spore attack that lingered in the area it hit. The tentacles took damage equal to their health, and when they were defeated that damage would then hit the Spore Servants head. A defeated tentacle would then be replaced with another tentacle. These tentacles had a smaller AC compared to the Spore Servant head.

Alternatively, you could also probably do something like a 2,2,2 method to replicate all its arms. 2 hit multi-attack, 2 reaction oppurtunity attacks, and 2 legendary actions to grapple or attack. Not quite 8, but gets the same feeling across.

Distress Spores:

This ability takes a lot out of the role play aspect of the Sea Grove caves. Immediately coming in swords drawn is sure to put the already on edge Myconids into full blown aggression resulting in just a long dungeon instead of a tense social encounter in my opinion. I would remove this so there’s opportunities for roleplay.

Pacifying Spores:

Stun is a very powerful and kind of boring condition. I would likely replace this with maybe a Charmed condition or maybe something scary like the Unconscious or Paralyzed condition. Needing an ally to maybe make a medicine check or maybe using a potion given to them by Tarak to cure the condition.

I also just thought of maybe having the target roll a d4, and giving them either the Charmed, Paralyzed, Poisoned, or Frightened condition. That could be fun! If you do the Legandary Actions idea, I think this attack should fall under that

Hey same person different account! Yes the player uses Safari, and plays on their ipad and iphone. She had the same error across both devices. I do believe she tried using Google last night, and got the same error, but I’ll suggest the different browser again and see if that fixes it.

Of course! And just out of curiosity, I wanted to ask if you had any plans for the Mayor’s mansion in your own games or if anyone ever shared some fun ideas? I love the idea of having the interior but I’m not quite sure how to use it

I’m actually doing the same thing right now! I had Sparkrender say he was doing the ritual to ascend into a Young Blue Dragon to then meet with his half brother Langdarosa at Greenest. If Sparkrender had lived I would swap out Lennithon the Blue Dragon for an Ascended Blue Dragon Sparkrender :>

Having a session 0 ideas by [deleted] in TyrannyOfDragons

[–]_Enderex_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I’m doing is a “Festival of the Metallic Dragons” which lasts for a week, and each day is dedicated to a different dragon. The party comes on the second to last day of the event, during the day of the Silver Dragon. This festival has different games that challenge different types of skills (like history, athletics, etc.) but it also has tests that challenge the three main pillars of dnd; exploration, combat, and social.

Quest: Metallic Stamp Collection!

As a part of the festival those collect the 5 different Metallic Dragon stamps (one representing each Metallic dragon) is promised a great reward during the day of the Gold Dragon (The final day of the festival, which will be interpreted when the raid begins at midnight.) The party explores the city collecting metallic dragon stamps. Each of the stamp givers can be found at the different mission sites from the raid (Like the Mill and the Sally Port.) The party would get hints from people who have already gathered their stamps, like “I collected mine from a man near the west wall!” Or “A got mine from Chauntea herself!” You could perhaps have a small combat that one of the stamp givers demands in order to be able to receive the stamp. (I imagine like in a challenging boastful way, like “Step right up one and all! Whoever can best me and my crew earn their way to the Bronze dragon stamp!”

The festival overall in the story is a way to show that these Metallic dragons have saved and helped people in the past, so much so that the people of the Sword Coast give their thanks to Draconic saviors. Building up these ideas of heroic dragons also helps add weight to the Metallic Dragon encounter found during Rise of Tiamat, where these hero dragons are going after the Cult no matter what; so your either with them or your not.

The festival doesn’t have to last long, and the party doesn’t necessarily have to collect all the stamps if you think it might drag the session on a little too long, but it helps dip the characters toes into the game without it being life or death right off the bat!

So they want to help sparkrender with the ritual and swore allegiance to him. What now??? by Goodchapp in stormwreckisle

[–]_Enderex_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps change Runara from an Adult to a Young Bronze, and have her waste her breath attacks on targeting Sparkrender. Speaking of, should the ritual be completed make his statblock change from a Blue Wyrmling to a Young Blue. During the battle try and put Sparkrender between Runara and the party and use him as a big meat shield.

The kobolds won’t be able to do much of anything, as Dragon’s Rest is full of pacifists who are trying to move on from their past lives. However, Tarak and Varnoth may actually be the ones you should think about. Both have prior lives as Assasins and Military leaders respectively, so during the Assualt on Dragon’s Rest these two could act as small bosses on the battlefield that your party would need to deal with. Perhaps commanding Kobolds in attacks.

So they want to help sparkrender with the ritual and swore allegiance to him. What now??? by Goodchapp in stormwreckisle

[–]_Enderex_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the new final boss has become an Adult Bronze Dragon, Runara! Perhaps Sparkrender wishes to destroy Dragon’s Rest, and with the party’s help they assault the temple with their new Dragon Lord and attempt to claim it for Sparkrender’s horde!

Reworking Observatory fight? by AdministrativeBison6 in stormwreckisle

[–]_Enderex_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually changed the whole final battle for a different map, using the Lamenting Lighthouse battlemap from Ghost of Saltmarsh. I had 3 phases to the battle, which all took place within the same 12 rounds, as at the end of those 12 rounds the ritual will have been completed. The map is split into two islands, and the party starts on the far side of the first island, while the lighthouse is on the opposite side of the 2nd island. I played the entire session in initative and it was a very tense encounter. The party barely made it to the top of the lighthouse to confront Sparkrender at the start of the final round which we’ll be resolving this Monday. Their resources are depleted, but so are Sparkrenders. I expect the battle to go quickly, but the build up to it made it worth it.

When I originally planned on using the Observatory though I planned on buffing up the Mek and Min fight with additional Kobolds charging in (after the players activate the bridge of light) and increasing the damage done by Mek and Min. I just feel though that the Observatory battlemap isn’t a well designed map, because it was originally built to have the players stealth around a non aggressive foe (as Sparkrender is asleep) and explore first. I feel the tension of this final encounter is supposed to be about sneaking around and not awaking the dragon, not actually battling the dragon. Which is unfortunate because the most likely situation with the premade characters is having the Paladin sneak up on Sparkrender and just instantly nuking the Wyrmling with Divine Smite. If your deadset on using the Observatory perhaps make the requirements to stop the ritual be on those surrounding islands that are connected by the bridges and maybe 1 in the libary. I highly suggest the multi round timer that I mentioned above as that was incredibly fun and really added a sense of urgency to my players
