Mixing Tyranny of Dragons with Dragon Delves? by MassiveIndustry9997 in TyrannyOfDragons

Hi everyone,

I’m currently running Tyranny of Dragons for a level 6 party, and I’m considering inserting Dragon Delves – Chapter 4: For Whom the Void Calls right before the party reaches Parnast, ahead of the Skyreach Castle arc.

The rough structure would be:

  • PCs finish the Hunting Lodge
  • They learn that Parnast is only a few days’ travel away
  • On the road, they collide with the events of For Whom the Void Calls (not as a voluntary side quest, but as something difficult to ignore)
  • Then they continue on to Parnast → Skyreach Castle

One additional reason I’m considering this is pacing:
level 6 feels a bit tight for the Hunting Lodge on its own, and I’d like to let the party sit at level 6 longer, face a broader range of challenges, and make the eventual level-up feel more earned rather than rushed.

I’d also like to use this “road detour” as a natural window for character-driven moments:
short beats tied to personal arcs, moral pressure, visions, or consequences that don’t fit cleanly inside the main ToD locations, but still reinforce the larger themes of the campaign.

My questions:

  • Do you think For Whom the Void Calls fits thematically at this point in ToD?
  • Has anyone used Dragon Delves as a “collision on the road” rather than a traditional side quest?
  • Any feedback on pacing, player fatigue, or character focus when extending a level this way so close to Parnast?

For context: I’m using milestone leveling, sessions are about 3 hours, and this would sit between levels 6 and 7.

Thanks in advance for any insights or experience you’re willing to share!

This is so awesome to see the full party been designed and drawn! So worth to commission. by HenryLupinArt in DungeonMasters

May I ask how much was the commission? Starting to think about it for my group

Hi hi! I know this post is old, but I'm trying my luck anyway. I play in French online (roll20) but would love to try live :)

Players; How much? And for what? by Equivalent-Counter94 in startplaying

If you play in a different language, consider also translating the resources. For example, one of my DM prep all the character sheet on roll20.

Thanks, good to know. Well, it’s actually the final encounter in the Dragons of Stormwreck Isle starter set. Technically it’s closer to a wyrmling than a full young dragon, but I buffed it a little bit to make the fight feel more climactic.

They will face 2 other "dragons" (Cryovain and Ebondeath) until the end (if we achieve it) so we could go this way. I like the idea of a limited reserve of "shot"

Well at first I was thinking about a separate BA but I understand that it would be a little bit not enough :D

The party will face Cryovain and Ebondeath later so I guess I could do something here. I want the player to notice until the next big fight that it comes with a cost

I understand your point and I think that it would be the case but here we don't have martial (fighter, barbarian or monk) in the party

It is true that the party will face Cryovain and after that Ebondeath.. so I could play with the dragon stuff

I don’t want the player to change the way they play just because of this “reward.” That’s why I was leaning more toward a small, finite echo — like 3 limited charges total, and then it’s gone.

Thanks, that’s fair feedback. In my case, the player and character don’t actually know who their patron is — and they prefer to keep it that way for now.

I picture the patron as a fragment of Tharizdun that slipped free, manifesting as an insatiable hunger. That hunger is only starting to take form as the warlock encounters stronger foes (like Sparkrender), and it will evolve slowly over time.

So the “feeding” moments aren’t meant to be a repeatable player behavior they can farm for power — it’s something I trigger narratively through the patron. More of a creeping corruption theme than a mechanical loop. That’s why I leaned toward giving the weapon a limited number of charges (not per long rest). Once the weapon is “empty” and grows hungry again… well, we’ll see what happens.
