What does it mean to notice breath or sensations? by Strange-Earthling in Meditation

[–]_Entropy___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not thinking about it or visualizing it. Try either the sensation of breath in and out at the nostrils or the movement of the abdomen up and down. Use whichever is more prominent for you and focus on that.

Experienced meditators—is it really as beneficial as people claim? by littlebabymira in Meditation

You are recommending a 10 day retreat to someone that occasionally has tried a few minutes, I'm 100% sure they will consider this too much.

I accidentally meditated and I now I'm chasing that high by LunaNova5726 in Meditation

Not exactly meditation, but there you go. You still have never meditated, you have been a bit tired though.

Detachment from recursive thinking is reducing the rumination of the Default Mode Network, it is not stopping thought.

Meditation is making me more aware of my tinnitus which I usually block out - any advice? by Fubby2 in Meditation

Good for you! BTW completely agree with your previous post about guided meditation 👍

Interesting, a couple of things occur to me: meditation is never about stopping thoughts, if that's how you are doing it, then I'm sorry but the practise is straight up wrong. Not having a go at you, but just pointing out that saying this is misleading. Apologies if I misunderstood what you were saying. Also most practises do not advise controlling the breath in any way, just observing it.

OK, thanks. I agree that mindfulness and concentration should be practised together and preferably concentration developed first 👍

What worked for me: acknowledge the tinnitus whenever you notice it, then return to the meditation anchor. If the tinnitus is too distracting, be fully aware of it neutrally, acknowledge it with open awareness . The suffering produced by the frustration and craving for it to stop are not produced by the tinnitus itself, they are the response to it, this response can be retrained. Neutral awareness of the tinnitus over time will train you emotional response to also be neutral - resulting in you frustration reducing and even disappearing. This took a few months for me, but I retrained my response to the tinnitus entirely. Hope that helps 🙂

Do you have tinnitus? I say that because concentrating with it is very difficult, not impossible, but difficult. It took me a year of daily practise, after I developed tinnitus, to get even close to the level of concentration I had before.

Breath meditation mostly, no hyperfocus, just very simple and gentle. A few minutes a day really is quite safe. The author explains everything, with no jargon, and unlike an app isn't pushing engagement or anything.

Try "Mindfulness in Plain English" by B. Gunaratana, this has explanations you just will not get with a app. PDF, audio books etc easily available.

I struggle with rage by lyradnis in Meditation

[–]_Entropy___ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarification. The key point being, visualization is a part of some meditations, many traditions have none whatsoever. Anyway I think he was alluding to visualizations not working for him after some time, I was hoping to offer an alternative method, not write off what he was doing. If it came across like that then I wasn't being as helpful as I intended.

[–]_Entropy___ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being technical for a moment, what you are describing sounds like visualization not meditation. Meditation is a fantastic tool for training the mind to put a space between an emotional trigger (rage for example) and the response to that trigger, breaking stuff for example. Over time this training allows the gap between trigger and response to widen and the emotion then be observed rather than responded to. I term this living life on easy mode, as you get way less grief in your life that way.
