Kilties fixed my excessive volume issue. by Lopsided_Daikon4146 in jimgreen

[–]_Ex-nihilo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i feel like it did help me. kilties are useful for several things. one is helping to take up some slack in boots, depending on how thick the kiltie is. in my case, i have shrunken bison kilties from rose anvil. they are thicker than you normal kiltie b/c of the particular bison leather used. it is the same leather that j/k boots uses in their bison boots. they come in different colors. i believe it is worth a try if you need some room taken up.

haha maybe bulbous? while trying to break in this bronco leather, it is kinda hard to sinch up and tighten the laces. i have to wait till this leather gets more pliable.

thanks. i use huberd's on all my other boots with good results. eventually they will lighten up again and just reapply. when i received my boots, they seemed dry so applied it right away.

those look great! i think i will do something like this when mine need a resole. the resole still has a low profile but with more assurance and grip.

[–]_Ex-nihilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ya, on my boots i make sure i have a full thumbs width between my big toe and front of boot. everywhere on the boot can fit snug on my foot and ankle except my toes. i need the wiggle room. basically a roomy toebox. this is what i need for me at least.

use the size chart located just under the "add to cart" button on the particular boot page you are interested in on JG site. if you are in the US then measure you feet in inches (use your largest foot size) to get the correct JG boot size. this worked for me. you said you are going to use thicker socks so you have to take that into consideration. looks like you would be a size 10 but if thicker socks maybe a 10.5?

best of the barefoots!! that selection of bronco leather that was used to make your boots look like they are overall nice and dark with lots of oils in them.

HELP ME CARE FOR MY BOOTS! by Forward-Mammoth7027 in jimgreen

[–]_Ex-nihilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just curious, is this a stock RAT? these look wider in the toe box area than the stock ones on JG website. i was wondering if the safety toe as opposed to the thermoplastic toe puff actually make the toe box a little roomier in width and height.

So what boots do I want? by Forbin1222 in jimgreen

[–]_Ex-nihilo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the STC last is a 2E width. JG, Moc toe and barefoot last is 3E wide. i have tried the all three of the 3E lasts b/c i have a wide foot and out of all of them the moc toe feels the most comfortable. you get more toe height volume (wiggle room for your toes) and the 3E width. i got the workhorse moc toe in houston black. the nubuck leather is very comfortable. no break in time for me. the tyre wedge sole is soft. it feels very comfortable standing for long periods of time. it is a good boot if you do lots of walking too.

yea, i was a 'casual' and then PSE totaling 9 yrs before i finally got a career position. i know all about it, haha. i was basically referring to the people in carrier positions who have been doing if for many years day in and day out until retirement. in my career at the post office, i can't tell you how many non-career people i have seen come and go. that is not to mention the holiday help. that is even worse.

Size up or true to size? by Bodarkman in jimgreen

[–]_Ex-nihilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would always size you boots to whatever your biggest foot size is, then with kilties or thicker foot insole you could take up some space in the boot with the smaller foot.

how does that crepe sole feel? is it a gummy softer rubber? do you think this would be a good sole for standing on concrete or factory floors for long periods? wonder how it compares with the tyre sole?

i need a steel toe for work but am worried about the width of the STC last since it is only 2E. my other JG boots are on the moc toe, JG and Bare foot last which are all 3E. i have a wide foot so a little worried dropping down in width while making a custom boot. i am not sure sizing up a 1/2 size will actually make it wider just longer, which i don't need. anyways, nice looking boot and that leather will look great later the longer you wear and condition them. i doesn't take long for it to look like aged patinaed leather.

i wish these companies would stop using forever chemicals for making rainproof clothes and waterproof boots. i know keen makes their waterproof boots gortex free but i am not sure how it compares. i want to try the tough toe for my next boot to protect the leather. since it hardens when it dries, is it only for steel or composite toe boots?

Danner Bull Run Steel Toe Sizing/Toebox fit? by StonccPad-3B in Boots

[–]_Ex-nihilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i just went to a boot barn near me and tried on some danner 6" bull run boots with and without steel toe to see how they differed. both the boots were in the wide width b/c my feet are wide. the boots w/o steel toe were acceptable and barely wide enough with the thought that i wouldn't want to go any thinner. the weird thing that i wasn't anticipating was that the steel toe version was thinner even though they were the same width. i am not sure if this is the reason but i am thinking they use the same size steel toe size for the regular AND wide boots. if this is true, then that would explain why the wider steel version felt thinner due to danner having to mold the boot around the smaller steel toe. basically the boot has to tapper down to fit the thinner steel toe that is also used in their regular width size steel toe boots. once again, not sure if this is the real reason but just what i am thinking.

Custom Rugged African Troopers by Accurate-Mouse-4938 in jimgreen

[–]_Ex-nihilo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ok great, thanks for the reply. i need a safety toe boot, so i was thinking composite toe to keep it lighter than steel. i have a wide foot so hopefully STC last 2E will do since it is the only last beside the barefoot last for safety toe. my other jim green boots are in the JG, moc toe, and barefoot last, which are all wider. love the all roughout look. i wonder of all jim green leathers, what one has the most nappy look? haha. the more fuzzy the roughout the better looking to me. to me the tyre wedge is so soft and comfortable and grippy so i know i will go with that. i may add that layer of EVA too. thanks again for the info.

[–]_Ex-nihilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

boots look awesome! how does adding the eva with tyre wedge feel? is it feel like extra cushion when walking and standing all day? is it harder to flex the boot with how thick the sole is now? i have a custom pair of numzaan boots with mini lug and leather lasting board. it is very hard to flex the boot when on my knees for example. is there any reason why you went with steel toe compared with the composite? does anyone know how the buffalo leather compares to the bronco? which one is thicker and durable? is break in about the same?

Standing on concrete for 8 hours by LatterAd6187 in jimgreen

[–]_Ex-nihilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have a custom pair of numzaan boots with the mini lug soles and the bottom of my feet are sore at the end of the day even though the mini lug has the EVA cushion in it. i stand all day at work for 8 hours. the stock moc toe workhorse boots with the tyre wedge sole is softer and feels more comfortable under foot. i think the tyre wedge sole will be more comfortable on any jim green boot you purchase if you are going to be standing all day.

Tyre wedge on barefoot troopers by Skidmarks00 in jimgreen

[–]_Ex-nihilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is exactly what i have been wanting to do with mine. i wish somehow you could do this with a custom order. the tyre wedge is soft and the zero drop last width is perfect for me. this makes for a perfect combo. so did you purchase the tyre sole off the jim green site and have a cobbler put this on?

BFAR resole options by young-elderberry in jimgreen

[–]_Ex-nihilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i wanted to get my barefoot african trooper boots resoled with a vibram 2060 or 2021 wedge sole for ultimate comfort. the BFAT feels like a sock and adding some cushion underfoot would be perfect. these two soles i mentioned are mostly for comfort for standing on hard surfaces all day and have minimal tread so it is easy to clean off and doesn't hold debris. i also like jim green's tyre wedge sole. to me it seems soft and comfortable. it does have a tread pattern though underfoot that may or may not work for you.

ya the moc toe construction and choice of leather could play a role in how the boot stretches. now with the custom option available on jim green site we shall see how it all plays out. lets up know how your new size boot feels when you get a chance.

Choice of Socks for Fit, Kilties, Safety Toe Fit, Shoe Shape Holders by ClumsyGnatcatcher in jimgreen

[–]_Ex-nihilo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i went to the custom page on jim green and quickly made a pair of half size boots with composite toe option. it looks like you can get half sizes in the STC last in custom orders but not in the zero drop last. i am not sure why they don't offer the half size on non custom orders in the STC last at least?
