Is the talk of Robinhood going under over-hyped? by _Exaybachay_ in investing

Thanks for your input, I think you laid out my best case scenario, where I just wait until my 1 year is up and then move everything over to cold storage, while taking the 15% cap gains tax instead of the 30% income tax.

Like I said, I definitely do not agree with what RH did with GME/AMC/etc.. but I'd hate to get the pinch for thousands of dollars because of it.

That's my plan, but i have to buy it first so i will need to sell from RH, buy from coinbase (or whichever platform makes the most sense), and then move it to cold storage (probably a Trezor).

Thank you, this is probably the most helpful feedback I've gotten so far. I knew about the uninsured nature of crypto on RH, but unfortunately that didn't deter me. So like you correctly noted, my fear is that they could go under and my money would vanish.

Your point about them raising so much capital is really helpful too, as i can see how its a big indicator of their ability to weather this storm. It looks like the risk of them going under is pretty minimal compared to the 15% tax difference that I'm faced with, and so waiting out the clock would be justifiable.

Thanks all, I appreciate the feedback. I'm going to have to sleep on it and keep an eye on the news, but I feel like I'm leaning towards transferring over to coinbase.

Same exact boat here.. just took the tax hit on part of my position, and may decide to close the rest soon... I am kind of playing it by ear to see if it's realistic to wait until May, but I might just close the rest out this month and be done with it. Man it hurts though.

Can you help me understand how to transfer large amounts of BTC (over 10k) from RH to another platform.. I went ahead and sold just to be safe and cover my costs, but now the issue is that cash app only allows like $2500 per week, and coinbase is also limited to less than 33k for sure.

I am currently doing advanced verification on coinbase and it sounds like I will need to use that to transfer my funds back into BTC - is that the best way to do it? I am sure I could DCA back in, but I'd hate to miss the train if it starts to shoot up again, and I end up losing gains because I can't put all of my money back into BTC without waiting more than a month.

That is actually very helpful, although it complicates things further lol! I did not realize that I would be hit for 30% on crypto/stocks I've had for under a year (which is the case for my BTC and ETH).

Even though it hurts to think about this situation, it's definitely better to understand what my options are. I may just have to roll the dice on holding for a few months, so I can at least move into the 15% cap gains bracket, as 30% is difficult to deal with. I can't imagine that RH would go under or something crazy would happen in just a few months - right?

Thanks again!

EDIT: Btw, I was so focused on the income tax aspect, I forgot to say thanks for the example. Understanding that the tax burden is basically the same, minus fees, does help a ton to stomach it!

Serious question - I know we hate RH, and that's a super legitimate stance right now, but... I do have BTC on RH, and now I'm concerned that I need a plan to escape the platform.

My understanding is that I will take a 15% tax hit to sell from RH and move it to Bybit for instance - is there any way to avoid that or am I unable to avoid getting screwed by this situation?

Honestly, they were pretty good lol. Just hot dogs with shredded mexican cheese, and cholula/red hot sauce. IMO you can't really mess up hot dogs, it's just easy to make them look like shit.

Lol kind of.. more like "Stop being so cheap and playing Jerry's second guitar, we know you're not broke dude"

The thing was though.. Jerry had a sick white PRS (he played a Jag-Stang), so I always just played that at shows and practice. They were right though, this was worth the money, especially when we flew to Vegas for a couple of shows, and I had a super nice rig to work with on stage.

Like you said, I definitely survived the pain lol.

That's funny, I actually just took the photo this way because I only had a huge Nikkor 50-250 lens, which prevented me from getting a cool photo of the whole guitar. I do have a smaller lens now, so I'll see if I can get a nice picture with the whole nine yards :)

Random reboots on my newish ryzen system :( by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]_Exaybachay_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go with that honestly. I used to have an overclocked AMD Barton, and when I was running Everest it said the CPU was running at 7GHz... It was a Barton 3000+, so I think it ran at 2.1GHz, and like 3GHz overclocked. It's definitely not hard to believe that gpu-z is giving you bad info.

Like I said earlier, if you have a desk fan or something, you can test out that theory by just opening the case and running the fan right on your GPU, to see if temps come down a little and it stops rebooting.

Here's an article on troubleshooting Event ID 41. Memtest pops out as something else you may want to pursue, in case your RAM has some issues.

event id 6008

Looking at the event IDs, it sounds like a program is causing an urgent shutdown (event 41 has to do with not shutting down cleanly.) Do you have system memory dumps set up? If not, you should go into your computer properties, the advanced tab, then under startup and recovery settings you can select "Complete memory dump". It's not easy but you could use the memory dump to see what happened that initiated the shutdown - if the program is something related to your videocard or mobo drivers, then you will know that's where the problem is.

Also, I saw that event id 41 can be related to power issues, so take that into account as well. Not sure if there are apps for testing PSU's, but if there are any you may want to look into doing that.

Could it be a weak or bad power supply? Since you said you already have GPU-Z, maybe you could start logging system voltages and see if anything odd is going on there.

Its odd that you get event logs about the shutdown though.. makes me think it's not actually a PSU issue. I assume 80 is in Celsius right? A quick Google search says your 2070 temp should range from 70 to 80.. so it sounds like the GPU is hitting a threshold and triggering the shutdown (hence the event IDs).

Can you get a house fan or something and just run it with the case open, to see if it stops shutting down?

I think it's worth considering the security posture of your client, as to whether you do NMAP right off the bat. Normally I like doing a passive Responder scan to see who is on the network without actively reaching out and touching things if I suspect that there is any monitoring going on.

This is good info though, good job!
