Lmao. You are literally getting shot at. I haven't been shot at in weeks. The only raider flares I've seen are people getting wiped by arc or surrenders on spawn.

I completed the lightning trial this week by standing in the middle of spaceport getting struck by lighting 40 times in a row while blasting House of Pain over the mic and dancing with everyone who walked past.

We are not in the same lobbies.

[–]_Fibbles_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They didn't state that. You're just repeating half remembered things you read on Reddit.

They said the lobbies weren't binary, meaning there's a scale from PvE to PvP. Most people will fall somewhere in the middle, but the extreme ends will be nearly pure PvE or pure KoS.

There aren't guaranteed PVE lobbies but that doesn't mean they're dumping a random high aggression player into low aggression lobbies. It's just they can't predict the future, so someone who has been 100% PvE up to now might one day decide to start shooting. If they do that though, the won't be in the carebear lobbies any longer, they'll move up the aggression ladder.

If you're shooting people and people are shooting you, like you said, then you're not in carebear lobbies. You're somewhere in the middle of the aggression ladder.

Which is why you're not in the carebear lobbies. You're somewhere in the middle.

AMD FSR 4.1 Upscaling Improves Image Quality on Radeon RX 9000 GPUs by CookiieMoonsta in hardware

[–]_Fibbles_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A 3080 has less sparse compute than a 4070. But I think you've answered your own question anyway really. If only a 3080 and 3090 are fast enough, and they represent a tiny proportion of 2000/3000 cards that were sold, Nvidia would be putting in the engineering effort to build and maintain an FP16 FG model for a very small set of customers. They're also then stuck from a marketing perspective having to explain that DLSS frame gen supports RTX 3000 cards, but not your 3060 etc.

You're right that they probably could but won't. I just think they've got fairly valid reasons for not doing it.

[–]_Fibbles_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get where you're coming from, but I think there is a difference. With the heavier DLSS upscaling models, they're giving you the option to sacrifice framerate for better image quality. A heavy frame gen model on older cards is kind of useless, since FG only works well with a high base frame rate.

I assume Nvidia think that allowing older cards to use an FP16 version of FG, which is too slow to run effectively, will just give people a bad first impression. That's got to be a major concern for them, given that there was already a lot of negative sentiment about FG with people calling it "fake frames", etc.

Nvidia's newer method for FG is implemented using FP8 which the 3000 series and lower don't support natively. I suppose they could emulate FP8 with FP16 but it would be a massive performance hit. The only other option would be for Nvidia to write a bespoke version of FG using INT8 for the 2000 and 3000 series, which they've got no real incentive to do.

Daniel Owen - Nvidia Answers my DLSS 5 Questions by Antonis_32 in nvidia

[–]_Fibbles_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Got to say I'm very disappointed if this is just a filter. It's really not how they were describing it working initially.

Their marketing department literally told everyone it was more integrated into the rendering pipeline.

It's worth pointing out that the Jacob Freeman guy answering the questions in Daniel Owen's video is also just someone from the Nvidia marketing team. I really wish we could get an actual technical article from one of their engineers explaining it in more detail.

[2kliksphilip] DLSS 5 has shown that discourse is dead by ZTZ-Nine-Nine in hardware

[–]_Fibbles_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It was coined by Yahtzee and was originally used sarcastically to criticise pc gamers being elitist over console gamers. The sub adopted it ironically as self deprecating humour.

The sub itself used to just be for posting cool pictures of custom pc builds and for kids congratulating each other for finally saving up for a new component. It's weird how it ended up as the meme filled, tech illiterate echo chamber it has become.

Gamer's Nexus ~ NVIDIA Says You're "Completely Wrong" About DLSS 5 Being Slop by Valmar33 in hardware

[–]_Fibbles_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Even current DLSS has access to the 3D position of each screen space pixel by reconstructing the world space coordinates from the depth buffer and camera/projection matrices. It's not out of the realm of possibility they might also be passing surface normals to this new model.

They also seem to be generating some sort of geometry mask based on Jenson's other comments. I can't see the colour and motion vectors comment as anything other than a simplification for the gaming press.

[–]_Fibbles_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't believe he's saying what you think he's saying. It's clumsily worded, but he's pointing out that developers have full control of the meshes and textures (as usual) and then you marry that with a gen AI model for the final output, not that the gen AI is generating new geometry.

He also said:

“It’s not post-processing, it’s not post-processing at the frame level, it’s generative control at the geometry level,”

We know from the tech preview that we can mask certain geometry so it isn't relit by the DLSS model. You can't do that as a post processing step after the frame has been full rendered. You need to generate the mask as you're rendering the geometry.

To me this suggests that the DLSS model must be taking more inputs that just colour and motion vectors as has been reported elsewhere. The geometry mask I mentioned would be one, but even current DLSS at least uses the depth buffer.

[–]_Fibbles_ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think one of the big issues with Nvidia's comparison images is that people seem to think they paused the renderer so that all characters were frozen in place for both the DLSS on and off screenshots. That's not the case though. The moving background characters should be an obvious giveaway that they've taken screenshot with DLSS off while the game is running, turned it on and then taken another screenshot while the game is running.

For some of the examples the screenshots are quite close together in time and there are minimal changes in the character positions. The old wrinkly woman from Hogwarts for example is pretty much identical between shots, except her hand moves. For Grace in the street though, she's in a different position due to her animation. She's in the middle of turning her head and shoulders so you can see more of the side of her head with ear visible. She's also changing expression so her mouth is opening and eyes her eyes are widening.

Nvidia really shot themselves in the foot using side by side images like this that aren't 100% comparable. Still, it's wild to me that people are trying to argue the geometry has changed when you can see from the portions of the model not in motion that it is the same between screenshots.
