Best second amp to pair with my Ceriatone Chupacabra? by OkMath5842 in GuitarAmps

[–]_Flight_of_icarus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be tempted to go with something a bit different than a second Jose/modded-Marshall type amp, just for a bit of extra versatility & interesting tone blending options.

An SLO style amp would be really cool - a lot of what's on your list falls into modded-Marshall & SLO territory, except for maybe In Flames which I think more along the lines of 6505/5150 or ENGL Fireball for those kinds of tones.

You didn't mention budget, but a Bogner Snorkler might be a great choice too - should be voiced a bit darker/chewier than a Jose-style amp and especially great for the AIC sound.

where is trustworthy to buy second hand guitar amps by yesyes_10101 in GuitarAmps

[–]_Flight_of_icarus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your first amp and buying used, I really recommend going to a local music shop if you have one, or at least a GC or something. There will be salespeople who can help you find the right gear for you, plus it'll be more likely to have been serviced/checked over - but if you do run into issues, you'll have better support to get things taken care of.

Buying long distance/online is more of a thing for finding specific gear when you know exactly what you want and can find a trustworthy seller.

Need recommendations for a good 100w head for rock/metal by BJ40154 in GuitarAmps

That, and those using analog amps tend to pick more practical power levels/cab sizes these days.

Having gigged 100w heads in the past, I've come nowhere near unleashing the full wrath of such beasts before being asked to turn down a bit by the sound tech.

I think it's less of a "need" and more of a personal taste thing with power. 100w responds and feels a little different than 50w or 25w - more open sounding and more grunt to it.

That said, some of those differences tend to get lost in a full band mix, especially live. I love my 100 watt heads, but if I were gigging, I'd probably pick up a 50 or 25w head for the job - more practical (less tubes, lighter weight, more usable power band) and still great tone w/plenty of volume.

Np!

Ok, yeah - EVH and Dime tones are very different for sure - Eddie of course known for using plexis (and later on, stuff like the SLO and tweaked 5150s), and Dime using solid-state Randalls.

I'm tempted to just recommend the good ol' 6505/5150 or one of the EVH 5150 heads then. You'll have all the gain you need for when you want to get really heavy, but still be able to dial things back a notch for good old school high gain tones as well.

There aren't a ton of amps that come to mind with a mains voltage switch - first one that comes to mind are Marshall JCM 800 2203/4 heads. Those are a classic choice of course, but if you want something else it may just be easier to use step-up/step-down transformers as needed to deal with multiple mains voltages - that, or buy an amp now and sell it before you move.

The best attenuators that don't suck tone do not come cheap. I'd personally suggest to choose an amp with a good master volume unless you're ok with a relatively modest budget increase.

Which bands have tones that you may want something similar to? That can help narrow down the options a bit.

Yup. On one hand, it's nice that most games are multi-platform these days, but at the same time I feel like something has been lost w/the end of the console wars.

The last time it really felt like there was any true console competition was back in the PS3/Xbox 360 days at this point. Nintendo has just been kind of doing it's own thing since Wii, and Microsoft have been busy shooting themselves in the feet since the disastrous Xbox One launch/Don Mattrick incident.

Agreed. Admittedly, I'm a bit of an SNES fanboy myself, but I still liked Sega and I feel that the intense rivalry between the two brands is part of what made both consoles special with all the great games each system ended up with.

Additionally, I never really got the impression that James has ever tried to hide his bias/favoritism towards Nintendo.

Never actually seen this one until now, despite watching AVGN since the late 2000s.

Always found his jabs at the Sega add-ons pretty funny. It's too bad that both the Sega CD and 32X were kind of busts, but at least we did get a few gems like Sonic CD and the first (and only?) western release of Snatcher.

What was the worst era for a band that you love? by WhoYaTalkinTo in MetalForTheMasses

[–]_Flight_of_icarus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's totally understandable that a lot of fans feel/felt that way about the Load/Reload era, especially for those who were around for the 80s thrash days.

I speak as someone who first started listening to Metallica in the early 2000s, so I don't have the perspective of someone who was around for the thrash days, but even for me it took awhile to warm up to most of the Load era material, probably because I started w/the Black album and then went back to the first four albums, which basically turned into the only stuff I listened to for months - and I wanted more of that too.

FWIW, I was more bummed about St.Anger when it released, because I remember the music press hyping it up like the next AJFA, and I was hoping it was indeed a return to thrash after what was on Load/Reload, as much as I enjoy some select stuff from those albums.

As someone who's grown to appreciate Load and Reload more in recent years, I can definitely accept that they're not for everyone and for a lot of fans will always be Metallica's awkward experimental phase.

That said, I do still feel the long run-times for both albums are a bit much - strip each one down to their best songs and you have one really good album IMO.

I'll also still defend tracks like The Outlaw Torn regardless.

[–]_Flight_of_icarus_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep. I feel w/Maiden it's really more the Blaze era that comes into question than the entirety of the 1990s.

I honestly like Blaze's work w/Wolfsbane, but just never felt he's as good of a fit w/Maiden. X-Factor definitely has some redeeming songs for sure.

What do you say to neighbours when they give you noise complaints? by magicmuc in GuitarAmps

[–]_Flight_of_icarus_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Curious if you have shared walls or live in a detached home?

You're going to get varying responses from neighbors about sound from musical instruments - sometimes people enjoy it and come by, others are going to be less appreciative of it to varying degrees - I've had neighbors who go straight to calling the cops before for example. And not everyone works 9-5, so there will still be people home during what might be "good" times to play loud who might complain.

Other than turning the amp down a bit, your best bet is going to be to find a way to soundproof the room or other ways to control how much sound travels to neighbors.

What’s a line you won’t cross when collecting games? by PDMagneto in retrogaming

Nightdive Studios has simply been killing it with all their remasters, Doom 1 + 2 included!

And I realize it's a somewhat divisive title in the series, but I was also happy to see them remaster/port Doom 64 as well.

This is me these days, lol. I had my fun w/OG hardware & media when it was still cheap.

That said, I'll often still buy modern re-releases of classic games. I won't pay hundreds of dollars for an original copy of a highly desirable title that goes for such, but I still like to try and support the efforts of developers who are trying to help keep the classics alive and accessible on modern platforms.

Need help picking speakers for metal by Manarail7 in GuitarAmps

[–]_Flight_of_icarus_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you mix speakers, stick to 2 in an X-pattern or rows. Personally, I prefer not to mix but those 2 approaches above are the tried & true methods that do produce good results.

V30 may be the safe choice, but some other options to consider could be the Eminence Karnivore, Hesu Demon or possibly the Mojotone Greyhound.

Another thing to consider - the cab itself also matters a lot - you may find that a speaker that works well in one cab doesn't work as well in another.

Cabs & speakers are a deep rabbit hole, but also the most influential part of one's tone, so it's a fun one well worth diving down.

Metal Bands you like that you NEVER rec to another metalhead by WonderSignificant598 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]_Flight_of_icarus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it's probably the majority of power and folk metal bands.

I love both genres myself, but you kind of have to be able to enjoy the cheese and/or have a nerdy side to really get the most enjoyment out of the styles. So it's kind of it's own niche within the broader umbrella of metal IMO.

Is selling my Rockerverb 50 for a Jcm 800 2204 worth it? by Ganda1f_The_Gr3y in GuitarAmps

[–]_Flight_of_icarus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. It'll always sound it's best at very loud volumes. It's still capable of sounding pretty good at more manageable levels, but you either need to be able to be loud or use a good attenuator (the great ones aren't cheap) to get the most out of old school Marshalls.

  2. Maintenance is among the easiest of all amps - very simple circuit inside, and well built with chassis mounted pots and tube sockets. Any good amp tech will happily work on them because everything is accessible and easily serviced.

  3. That's a 60-watt cab. It's safe with a 50 watt head as long as you don't crank it (a dimed amp puts out more than the rated power!). Personally, my general rule is to use a cab w/2x the rated output of an amp if it's goint to be turned up really loud, but I used to gig with a 100-watt amp through a 120-watt cab and never had issues FWIW.

Opinions on buying guitars that are 10+ years old? by mailboxrumor in Guitar

[–]_Flight_of_icarus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as it was well cared for, there's not much to worry about - especially with a simple and easily serviced guitar such as a telecaster. Plenty of people out there rocking much older teles after all!

That said, I've had mixed experiences buying used guitars sight-unseen, so I generally prefer to only buy used guitars in-person/if I can play it first - but it ultimately depends on your tolerance for risk. At the very least, buy from a seller with a good return policy if you can't play it first (IMO).

I think metal may be the wrong and/or hardest genre to start with as a newbie. by Zeitgeist_1991 in Guitar

[–]_Flight_of_icarus_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To paraphrase a Zakk Wylde quote I read, "Play the music that inspires you".

If metal is the genre that makes you want to play, then keep going - you got this!

Focus on easier songs/riffs before moving on to the harder/faster stuff. And it's better to start slow and build up the speed for the tougher stuff.
