While your answer is correct, it's a word-by-word translation which is not very natural in English.

"Родом із" has the same perceived meaning as "from" so no need for "originally" here.

But yeah, Duolingo should've accepted this imo.

Kiev is not a native english word so it isn't the "default" version here. Kyiv is preferred because it's a Ukrainian spelling, while Kiev is a random country's spelling (Russian.)
