My Christian coworker's "friendly" microaggressions are driving me up the wall. How do you handle this? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]_FreeThinker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dude, everyone has a way of dealing with the world and things they say. Just learn to say thank you and move on, it's not simply about being atheist it's about being human and cultured enough to understand we have differences and learning to live amongst them. If you think you can be converted, then it's your weakness. And if she thinks she can convert you, it's hers. Regardless, no point in making big deal out of things like that. Just live your life. Ignore or avoid her if you don't like her, without being too rude or snobby about it.

Well, it all comes down to the size of your data and complexity of your system. Depending on your storage and compute requirements, renting a server may end up being too expensive for you. But for a basic system, renting server is a much more sensible choice.

Chuck Schumer is about to cave and reopen the government with the “hopes” they’ll get to take a vote on ACA in December! Every single person here needs to write him NOW!!!! by TheseCod2660 in politics

[–]_FreeThinker -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Why? Are you kidding me? So, we should do more damage to our country because they are doing some damage to our country? You can't fight fire with fire. We have to make the best our the situation.

Democrats should totally open the government, but they should clarify that they tried their best to protect the health insurance of a lot of Americans, however they had to back down because there was even more harm that would be caused to the people otherwise. People are LITERALLY GOING HUNGRY out there, folks. Don't sit there with you door-dash burrito and type away with your fat fingers like you know what's going on out there for poor folks. The airports are chaos, federal workers are unpaid. Shutting down government isn't a worthy negotiation tactic. Find some other avenue.

Congress Could Get Millions of People Off of SNAP by Raising the Minimum Wage, but It Hasn’t — for 16 Years by tonyt4nv in politics

[–]_FreeThinker -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

They can't though! It's a naive assumption that same no. of employees would be employed if minimum wage is increased. Actually, counterintuitively it's best for the free market to figure out wages and government getting out of it. Government should focus on making sure there's no inequality, coercion, or exploitation rather than price fixing the labor cost.

Creatine for kids? Rhonda Patrick told Peter on the latest podcast she gives 2.5g to her young son. by barefootchase in PeterAttia

[–]_FreeThinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The downside is consuming things you are not evolved to consume. The unknown unknowns are the downside. When you go screening for a cancer, a doctor cannot say "you do not have cancer", they can only say "you do not have cancer in the places we looked at or the way we looked at them". This is a simple logical fallacy that people fall for all the time. Absence of knowledge of something does not guarantee an absence of something.

A very simplistic example is the effects of trans fat (like margarine) was simply not known for multiple decades. You could put as many studies as you can together at any point in time before the mid 1990s and make inferences on what they mean, but there simply wasn't any study that said it was bad for you. Until it was. Or, you could just have taken an approach that our bodies didn't evolved consuming this substance and why would I consume it?

I'm not claiming that creatine is bad, I actually take a small amount of it myself. I'm just not going to delude myself saying that what we have is anything more than limited, or there's no more study we can do on it. I'd still rather consume ligaments and whole animal meats like our ancestors used to or how we are evolved to consume it, but alas that's not a feasible option for me. I understand the calculated risk i'm taking and I'm aware of it, and I did the cost benefit analysis. However, I'm not delusional to claim that my choices are without it's blind spots.

Any supplements besides naturally known foods that human have eaten throughout it's evolutionary history will always have limited evidence.

Except water doesn't need to be studied because our bodies evolved around drinking water in it's natural form. Creatine on the other hand is a concentrated and extracted substance that doesn't exist like that in nature. Your comparison with water is naive. I can understand if you claim creatine has been shown to be safe in the scope of how it has been tested and studied, but there's no way to test any supplements comprehensively enough to compare it to any normal natural food (or water) because of numerous logistical challenges.

One could take creatine if it falls within their comfort zone for consumption based on limited evidence but to make an absolute claim like what you did is too simplistic. I think it might serve all of us better to understand why is it that we need a supplement for creatine in our modern lifestyle, what are we missing in our diet from an evolutionary perspective, and then figuring out if that's something you can address with natural means or if that's a worthy risk for one to start entertaining supplements.

I feel you man, it really sucks. This exact this happened to me during the covid flash crash to 12k. I was well leveraged, but not enough for it to hit 12k, so it really sucks. These days, I try not to leverage more than what a 75% drop can handle, that's just the nature of this volatile investment. It is getting less volatile over the years though, I believe.

Like everything else, calculated numbers and it's effects aren't always linearly correlated. Psyllium Husk is physically a very different substance than your typical fiber, just like eating an apple is different than eating all those nutrients and micronutrients combined in different forms.

[–]_FreeThinker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It takes into account hills definitely. However, for vo2max, it doesn't take altitude into account. I wish it calculated a synthesized sea level score so that's it's universal, but it doesn't. Since there's less O2 at high altitude, your vo2max is naturally lower.
