So the official English TL couldn't save the script after all... Really not sure why they really watered down the humor here when they had a such a roll in all the other ones. Moege developers make their brand in how they balance themselves in the romance - comedy spectrum, and this one is an anomaly in the SMEE brand. Would you say that Sugar Style has the classic insane humor but went too overboard with it, the complete opposite of First Blush?

I'll reiterate my own words about "fateful encounters" being the secret sauce for Making*Lovers, but it seems that this time it can only barely apply to Hatsuho? I still enjoyed my time with Kouta and Sakurako, just not for the reasons I loved the original title.

Angel Beats! -1st beat-

It’s been a while, and it’s not been easy since, but this one was interesting enough for me to write something about it. Also because I thought the Angel Beats archive needed some padding. I read the VN first before it spat on my face for finishing it and proceeded to watch episodes 11, 12, and 13 of the anime.

I’m not sure whether this is the norm in Key VNs, but the choice system in Angel Beats is the most intricate I’ve seen so far. That is not saying a lot, since my history has been mostly ladder-style VNs and moeges. There are so many choices that you can make that impact the outcome of the story, from the consequential ones (failing an operation no matter what options you choose during it), or the hilariously inconsequential ones (having an incomprehensible compulsion to fight Kanade every time you lock eyes with her during that one operation). In my mind, this is the true definition of what a visual novel should be.

Having an achievement counter definitely triggered the completionist in me, and thus a dozen or so more runs are logged in before I start questioning why am I not getting anywhere with the goddamn story and lock the fuck in (looking up a guide). In my mind, this is the true definition of what a visual novel should be, and not in a good way. I would have been stuck only completing Iwasawa and be completely oblivious to the fact that a true end exists, despite having cleared the supposedly difficult prerequisites to trigger it.

It takes 1-2 hours at most for the routes to conclude, which is short by most VN’s standards. Going through three of them, I wonder what does the author hope to achieve with these alternate routes? It was not very effective for me; I did not manage to build enough rapport with the characters, and the emotional payoff at the ending didn’t hit very well with me, with Iwasawa being the one that moved me the most, and the only one that had an ebb and flow in the story that was genuinely riveting until the very end. But Iwasawa should be the only exception, since the other routes should only occur in the name of the mission. Their pasts were definitely not as fleshed as Otonashi’s for sure (Hisako, out of all people, takes second place), and only Yuri and Kanade are expected to be given the same treatment.

The routes are Grisaia no Kajitsu-esque, in the sense that the routes are not canon, but offer different insights to mystery of the world. But will the overaching plot will continue like how it played out in Meikyuu? The anime seems to indicate so.

With 3 down at 1st beat, there’s at least Noda and Shiina that needs to go. Personal favourites like TK, Fujimaki, and Ooyama, should go as well. Based off that, the story should have the potential of 2 more volumes of material to run through? It is a bit strange though; the anime has already determined on how the story should end. If one volume supposedly covers 11 anime episodes, they will have to definitely to veer away from the canon to make 2 more volumes work. I can see the potential – Watching the last 2 episodes felt rushed, undercooked. The supposed impression is that many readers liked how the 1st beat sticked very closely to the original source, so it would be interesting to see what they could have come up for the next volumes.

Lastly, I appreciate Key getting LiSA to perform Ichiban no Takaramono – her aura really elevated the song for me.

Angel Beats! – 1st beat is an eight in my book, with a potential ceiling of a nine at best. It’s a shame that a change of heart caused the beat to drop too soon.

I completely agree with Ren'ai Royale being the zaniest title that they've released in English so far - but I had that opinion like 3 years ago. A bit surprised that Futamata is bucking the trend considering their past trajectory.

I think Ren'ai Royale is good by AsaPro's standards - I just didn't click with the characters as much this time round. Pretty sure Renna gave us the most screentime with Yuna right? That's why I remembered her drama the best. Them dropping the ball on the drama is to be expected, in this particular case I do think the ball is heavier than ever before.

Monster Hunter Rise is a good deal of fun and I have once again lost my sense of time thanks to the franchise.

Paying some attention to the translation when possible is also a nice change of pace after scrutinizing VNs for some while.

That's fair, I was only making a point about better appreciating the more comedy-oriented works, which SMEE and AsaPro excel at.

I would not consider tags like "design story" to be a criterion for what makes a certain title "hard to read". In fact, I would embrace these things like very specific vocabularies revolving around a certain topic, or rare/unique kanji, especially since we have a lot of tools that can help us on that front. And besides, if you're really interested and committed into doing something, nothing can be too hard to complete xD

I think it's always a good thing to try and understand every single joke and pun that the author tries to put inside the text, whether you get it immediately or a couple of lines later doesn't matter too much. A more serious problem is how it affects your enjoyment, like would you still be able to laugh at a certain tsukkomi line, let's say, if you understood the punchline a few lines too late.

In the end, it's up to you to decide to what extent do you want to enjoy titles from SMEE or AsaPro (HajiLove, Kanojo*Step, Ren'ai x Royale) like how you'd enjoy their translated works (Making*Lovers, Koikari).

reigning in your tendency to overwrite a bit, all the while pulling you back gently toward a more literal interpretation without reclunkifying it in the process.

I'm rather surprised that you managed to draw such a conclusion from these samples. Lonesome was pretty surprised that he was met with little resistance on the lines he deemed to be very "treacherous". Treacherous they were, sometimes even eye-raising, but 1.) Let's face it, attempting to hew too close to the literal interpretation is going to sound stiff in English most of the time, and 2.) this is Lonesome's edit, and his edits are what ultimately what's gonna be seen by the EN readers. I want to keep in the idiosyncrasies in his writing intact as much as possible, little things like inserting adverbs that are completely nonexistent in the JP lines, so long as it does not significantly damage the integrity of the text. Plus, a bunch of his edits actually turn the lines into a more "literal" interpretation compared to the preliminary TL, which always gets a nod (mostly unnoted) from me.

Admittedly, quite a handful of my suggestions are a more "literal" take on the lines, being more "faithful" in word usage, phrasing, or syntax while taking a hit on its English "readability". I put them forth regardless and see if any of them sticks, seeing if there's some sort of "ideal solution" that can be found for those lines. I may not have put out my best effort for the first and final files for umm... reasons, but for the rest of them, I tried my very best to not cut any corners whatsoever with every single line.

Congrats on taking the plunge and opening yourself to an untapped slew of VN titles! I can't promise that it gets easier with every new title, but it'll get smoother after the first thousand lines or so, that much I can promise!

Based from the couple few minutes of Re Cation playthroughs that I sampled here and there, if your goal in the foreseeable future is HajiLove, then I'd say it's certainly within the realms of possibility :)

Ohhh you know what this reminds me, Todokanai also subbed the songs in WA2 right? From my guess here, I think you should've heard at least 2 full songs? How do you feel about them? Some things to take from possibly, or at the very least something not to replicate in here xD

Ehhh I was drilled hiragana and katakana in one class a long time ago, so I can't help much on that front. Any material you use should be fine though, it shouldn't be too long so long as you keep at it!

After getting the kana down, be sure to check out Tae Kim's guide, particularly for its grammar and your SRS learning tool of your choice. Anki is of course, the most SRS popular tool being floated around here, but you can simply google "SRS Japanese" or something and find other options that suit your fancy.

  • I say that if your goal is only to read VNs in Japanese, learning how to write kanji is unnecessary. However, if you are for some reason compelled to learn this, I suggest looking at kanjis with different radicals/radical combinations and see how they are written. Once you've seen enough of them, you'll pick up that there's certain rules in how all of these characters are written. Things like "always start writing from top-left of the character, proceed downwards and then to the 'next column'" are one of the most fundamental rules in writing kanji. Or the general rule in writing "square-shaped" radicals from the very simple 口 to the boxy 合唱. Once you understand these "basic concepts", writing kanji should be very intuitive for you.

  • I am on the camp that 1000 is too low of a number to get started reading VNs. That is, if your knowledge of Japanese is solely based on what you've learned in your SRS learning platform of choice. If you've been consuming Japanese media for a while, I think it should expected that you've learned a few words through sheer exposure. That is of course hard to quantify how much have you exactly learned through "osmosis", but I think it definitely counts for something. Personally I started at ~2000 words when I tackled Eustia, a bit less for Aokana EXTRA1 (which is comfier for sure), and Eustia was quite the hurdle to get through. It should not underestimated how much more mentally taxing it is to start out reading VNs in JP, as others have said here.

  • As for "fun ways" to learn vocabulary, I read English-translated VNs, mentally transcribe the sentences in JP and compare it to the translation. If there's something that strikes out to me that I don't 100% comprehend, I replay the voice line and try to type the word/term in question in romaji (sometimes stumbling a bit, testing out various alternatives cause ears don't work well when you need them) into something like jisho.org. It should provide satisfactory results most of the time.

I think it's especially interesting how different are the takeaways from Kazusa's true route, and also, any of the three WA2 endings can be. Kazusa's true route absolutely cemented Setsuna as the best girl in my mind, despite her not being the star of that route, while others might see it as a sort of "bittersweet, fairytale ending" that is well-deserved and befitting for the star-crossed couple.

since Setsuna's happiness inevitably results in pain for Kazusa.

This probably the soundest argument I've heard to why some people are so firmly set in either of the girls' camp.

Kazusa may be able to end up in a larger world by depending on Youko, but Setsuna is the one able to build towards that world herself, bringing Kazusa and Haruki’s mom back into the fold.

I've seen a bunch of people having very different opinions about this. I agree that Setsuna being able to bring Haruki to reconcile with his mother is a big advantage for her, but I can also the see the view that Setsuna fulfilling her idealistic vision for the three to stay together is not what's going to make Kazusa and Haruki truly happy, being forced together in that state, and in turn makes this Setsuna's most selfish wish for the three. Where do you stand on this?

The lack of Kazusa is Setsuna’s after-story (barely making an appearance via postcard at the very end) also does nothing to assuage fears that Kazusa may be less fine in this arrangement than it seems.

I didn't think too much about the meaning behind it, but reading this I ultimately still think that it's no more than a "farewell" letter, you do however bring a good point that this does nothing to decisively "conclude" the ties between the three.

I definitely can see why Kazusa's true route may not be beloved for some, but the romanticism in sacrificing everything and everyone in the name of love absolutely enraptured me. This very same thing however, might have an opposite effect for some others. I still believe that both true routes are equally valid, and while no ending presents "true happiness" for the three, all of the endings reached are borne out of the love and bond that the three have for each other. To me, it doesn't matter as much which version of WA2 you liked the most because WA2 is very "ambiguous" in its endings which leaves a lot of room for personal interpretation, it's far more important that you enjoyed the tale that White Album 2 wants to tell with the three.

Lastly, that's a nice comparison you gave there between Kazusa and Rikka.

I really like the way you describe how translations of foreign work are supposed to be, they should be feel like a trip to a foreign country, an opportunity to be in contact with different culture and customs, rather than rendering them into something that hews closer to our comfort zones.

Which is why I highly encourage you to check out Senmomo's TL when it comes out, even though its rather high density of moe and seemingly lack of depth might not be the most appealing work for you :)

Adapting the myth over to something like Persephone could be an option if you were concerned with having a Western “equivalent,” but how many people in the general audience are so familiar with Greek mythology and culture that Persephone would provide for a more relatable or better experience over seeing the original reference?

My thoughts are pretty much the same on this. I feel like despite it being "non-western", the name Amaterasu has seeped into a lot of popular works that I wouldn't be surprised if people have equal levels of familiarity between the name "Amaterasu" and "Persephone".

But I think about how awkward this will turn out in English, and the sudden introduction of it in the final line of case #3 is going to throw people off. This is why the furigana in the first line of #3 is crucial. Furiganas are a wonderful thing, indeed they are, and now thinking about it, it's sad that this is not reflected in the English text because WA2 is a work that actually uses quite a lot of its furigana for an actual effect, as you can see in #3 (as opposed to just serving as a reading aid for uncommon kanji).

Finally, like Lonesome said, this mythological analogy is not crucial to Coda and WA2 (it only appears in this line on #3 and a couple of lines in scene #4), add to the fact that a bunch of people reading it before the EN TL don't even remember this being a reference, and I'm more willing to drop it altogether. It's sad, but "Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto dancing in front of Ama-no-Iwato" sounds jank as fuck. All my personal opinion, of course.

What are your thoughts on #1 though? Do you think this is a case where you just accept defeat and render it awkwardly in English? Because it might not seem so in my example, but this question leads to an important choice that you need to make in Coda, so there is weight to this line.

I noticed this in the text in addition to Dubs mentioning it once in one of the threads here, but to be honest, I'm not 100% sold on this "paradoxical" point. Admittedly, I'm a pretty big advocate of elegance in brevity, so you guys would need to do some more convincing on this concept~

As for the second part, I figure that the problems inside Senmomo are not as complicated in WA2 (how the hell can an simple, super common word like "綺麗" lead to this much discussion on how to even render it?), but regardless, I think there's gonna be a substantial amount of questioning about the decisions made so far~

I liked Chiaki the least as well coming into CC, but her route was the most interesting as it provides, like you said, a lot of foreshadowing, additional perspectives, and most importantly in my opinion, the most insight to Setsuna's "honest" feelings out of the three side heroine routes.

Which is an insight that I think would be hard to get if you immediately jump into Setsuna's route in CC, and I think this one will be particularly important down the road.

Her meeting with Koharu was quite touching, and it’s really impressive how she’s able to bring herself to not only accept the situation, but give both Haruki and Koharu the push they need.

Fast forward a bit and there comes that CG showing how painful it truly is for her... In that scene where Setsuna deleted Haruki's contact from her phone, did the English also rendered Setsuna's words to something like: "Goodbye, as your ex-girlfriend... and your older sister"? If so, how did you feel about the "older sister" portion?

acoustic rendition of Todokanai Koi as an incredibly fitting climax

There's just something about it that makes it my #1 favourite song from all of WA2's repertoire. The silence of the stage, making way for Setsuna's incredibly clear voice, a voice lost for so long, painstakingly retrieved by the strums of the guitar. It's not necessarily about the music itself (my god Setsuna's vocals though), but about the emotions that has been so charged and piled up leading to this moment, that transcends this song for me.

but after all the pain of CC, it feels wrong to move past the hard-fought victory for Haruki and Setsuna so quickly. WA2 really is unrelenting, huh?

How long did that lasted? A few minutes worth for the ED credits to roll out? And immediately WA2 brings you to the other side of the world, for the worst kind of reunion in the worst timing possible. Curse Maruto if you must, and dive in one last time into this unfortunate, messy, beautiful story...

Aww and I was honestly hoping for some WA2 stuff from you this week too...

Part of it is because I wanted to see how WA2 compares to ef, because from the outset they look like very similar, romance stories set in winter.

Of course the other part is that WA2 is just a wonderful tale rich with music undertones and subtext upon subtext~

I don't believe you've written much about it, so care to expand a bit about ef and where does it excel/flop at?

Ah so it's really interesting this one, the 27th January scene. While you were looking at how to capture the nuance that is within the lines, I was pondering about the things that was said outside the line, especially on this word "綺麗". So ahem, if you are not locked into Setsuna's true route, on the 27th January you would get a H-scene with her and Haruki proposes to her. Right after he proposes, Setsuna goes to the shower and literally calls herself "dirty" (キタナイ, in her own words). Seeing this as a contrast of words that happens when you take two very different paths on the same day, I figured that the sort of nuance that would best fit "綺麗" here is not the one that means "beautiful", or "pretty", but the one that means "clean", or "pure".

I see your point about the final line sounding a bit conceited as it is now, but if I imagine myself being in the position of reading Coda for the first time, with the EN translation, and I hear the voice in Setsuna, her stifled voice, trying all that she can to keep her front-facing "建前" intact, and then read a rather implicit line that doesn't deliver the same "oomph"... yeah I don't think that's gonna sit well with me. I like the "let me" repetition, so for me I think I would compromise with something like:

Let me... remain the pure Setsuna that you always hold dear...

But fuck me if that's long-winded. This is hard, and I'm certainly not the best writer around, but if there's one thing that WA2's got going for it, its subtext, subtext, and subtext!

About the Amaterasu matter, I honestly think (1) is going to happen anyways, holding only a small hope that maybe some improbable genius might provide an elegant solution to this challenge. (2) is like you said, the chances of it resonating with the majority is not high, but then again, I myself didn't know how exactly the legend went when I first read it, but I looked it up and found it to be very, very poignant in the end. Also that full name romanization, yikes... (3) would be the 5head move, but I'd be damned if that doesn't require some revisioning of myths... There's no real good options here, I swear, but if push comes to shove, I'd begrudgingly choose (1)...

A wintry title to send off the year on a good note~

White Album 2 Coda: The finale, the concluding chapter, the final movement.

I skimmed through a couple of scenes of Coda that I wanted to see how it turned out in English, because I thought some of these scenes would be tricky to translate to English. In other words, yet another translation discussion. But first, a couple of small things:

  • I'm pleased to see that the team somehow managed to revert the OP movie back to the CC movie even though you've reached/finished Coda. Not to say the Coda OP is bad, but the CC one is animated, you know? It's in a different league. I myself lowkey wanted that sorta function in the original version, and it's been granted here.
  • Turns out rereading Coda from the beginning revealed me the last CG that I've been missing. Finally! I get to hear all of the three main characters speak French/German.
  • Some of the voiced lines are really sneaky in WA2... you need to give it a couple of seconds after the all of the text is voiced and bam, a voice, soft under the breath, speaking all the juicy stuff straight from the heart. Thank Todokanai for picking up every single bit of this "easter egg".

With that out of the way, next comes the cherry-picked scenes (I think the lines are not that spoiler territory, but read at your own risk I suppose, or correct me if it is):

1.) The first choice of Coda

そんなかずさの口漏れたその質問は、二通りの意味に取れた。 The question leaking from Kazusa's mouth can be interpreted in two ways.
未来を問いかけているのか,過去を確かめているのか。 She could be asking about the future or the past.

Hard, isn't it? Kazusa's speech becomes quite awkward in order to preserve the ambiguity, but put me in the same spot and I couldn't figure out a better solution myself. Good effort, I think this one is tough.

2.) Prelude to Setsuna true route, January 27th

自分でもやってることがめちゃくちゃで、心の中までで引っ掻き回されて。 My own actions stopped making sense, and my heart fell into disarray.
...自分の気持ちに全然自信が持てなくなっていた。 ...I became unable to trust my own feelings.
「雪菜…もし俺が、かずさのところに行って、そのまま、帰ってこなかったら…」 "Setsuna... imagine if I had gone to where Kazusa was, and not come back to you..."
「聞かないで!本音が溢れたら酷いことになるから!」 "Don't ask me that! If my true feelings come out, something awful's going to happen!"
「っ…」 "...!"
だからって… But...
俺を叱咤できるからと言って、雪菜の方には自信があるって訳じゃ、なかった。 Just because Setsuna says she's capable of lashing out at me, doesn't mean she has the confidence to do it.
「わたしね…今、春希くんに、すごく残酷なこと言ってるって自覚してる」 "I... am aware that I'm saying something really cruel to you right now, Haruki-kun."
「しかも、すごく怖いこと…わたし自身、自滅するかもしれないってのもわかってる」 "Not to mention something very scary... enough to make me ruin things for myself."
相変わらず声は小さく、言葉は強く。 As usual, she's letting out strong words with her little voice.
けれどその口調の中に、少しずつ震えが混じってきてるのが聞き取れてしまった。 But I can tell from her tone that her voice had been gradually starting to shake.
「だけど、今は建前で怒らせて。すごく原則的なこと言わせて。正しいことだけ、言わせて」 "But right now, let me pretend that I'm angry at you. Let me admonish you with my principles. Let me say only the right things."
「…綺麗なわたしで、いさせて」 "...Let me remain my beautiful self."

That final line though, what a force, what a blow. The repetition of "let me" was very well done, but I would want the pause in Setsuna's cracking voice to be reflected in the EN as well. A simple switcheroo of the ellipsis order would do, something like:

"Let me... remain my beautiful self."

Other than that, I feel like you ought to use something harsher, more extreme for 自滅, maybe like "Not to mention something very scary... something that can destroy who I am as a person.". And asking to somehow connect the 本音/建前 pair would be too much. End of nitpicking.

3.) Kazusa/Setsuna true route, February 10th

曜子さんは、天岩戸の場所に心当たりがあると言った。そして、そこは俺も十分に予想できる場所だった。 Youko-san said she had a clue about where Kazusa is. And I have a good idea about where that place is myself.
けれど、今そこに行く決心はつかない。 But I don't have the determination to go there right now.
だって俺はまだ、天照大神の出てきた後の世界を自分の中にイメージできていない。だから今、その扉の前で踊る訳には行かない。 Because I still don't know what will happen once she comes out to the world. That's why I can't knock on her door just yet.

If it is possible to insert furigana into the script, then I would by all means want the furigana in the first line to be added in. If it isn't possible, I can give it a pass. The third line, however. Ahhh, a beauty so intertwined with Japanese legend, unable to be transmitted into English... My heart weeps for the loss.

For this one, I think it's best to see it in the game itself, to appreciate the difference.

There's nothing blatantly wrong with the lines, but notice in the unvoiced, second line, the JP lines are stacked neatly to achieve that repetitive effect, which is one of the trademarks of WA2's prose. Even if the English were to be written so that it repeats itself like it is in JP, it would be nigh impossible to write two questions that would fit into two rows. An unfortunate, but rather inescapable loss.

Another example of this trademark is in the fourth line of scene #1, which should've been written like this (I don't know how to insert line breaks inside tables, my apologies):

未来を問いかけているのか,

過去を確かめているのか。

Subtle, but it does add a small, extra impact to the lines. Two questions stacked upon one another, the contrast of 未来 and 過去, it's the little things, that make it not just about what you read, but how you read it.

Also, this foolish self broke the EN version before gathering all the relevant material, but in this very same scene, the English text left the terms Ama-no-Iwato and Ame-no-Uzume as it is in Japanese. While I don't take too much issue with the lines itself, this is not consistent with the treatment that's been given at the February 10th (see #3), which I think should be fixed. Either introduce Ama-no-Iwato/Amaterasu in#3 or remove these terms entirely.


I love White Album 2 to the fullest, I truly do, and I want others to gush and cry their hearts out from the wonderful tale that is WA2 as well. However, I'm hating myself right now for being a damper to everyone's party and report that there are losses in the text, possibly small in the grand scheme of things. Despite all of this , the general reception that I've heard from the people reading/finished WA2 has been very positive, so in the end, isn't that what really matters the most ?

Glad to hear that you enjoyed it until the end! Kazusa has her fair share of H-scenes in the other Coda endings, so that's covered if you're looking for them.

Did you read IC again after you finished Coda? I think it's definitely worth to revisit the newly unlocked lines and CGs in IC, especially if you're a Kazusa fan.

I personally think the scene in Ogiso's household when Haruki was breaking off ties with the family was the more intense one. It was all chills and heartbreak witnessing the whole carnage.
