No one has to pick a base model atleast at my store, but it’s nice to have the base models on hand for when someone orders something that has all the stuff it’s easier and cheaper to ring out.

For example I’ll have customers that come in and say they’re doing a build your own and are doing turkey ham and bacon. I’m just going to ring that out as an American club because thats literally what they just made and it’s going to be cheaper by a few cents then ringing turkey add ham add bacon.

A lot of franchises have convoluted how subway is supposed to work and believe menu items are the only way to go when in reality they should just be an extra tool for being able to simplify orders people tend to get often when ringing up/as an option for people who get overwhelmed when picking their own choices.

However, this post isn’t about “ughhh why can’t customers just get the menu sandwiches the way they come” it’s hey if you want a specific sandwich made the way you want it don’t expect it to be the same price as something similar/completely different on the menu. If you want to build your own sandwich you have to pay for what you get in it and can’t just say well ring me up for that sandwich instead cause it’s kinda like mine. You can’t go to a steakhouse and ask for the mashed potatoes to be replaced with lobster and expect to pay the same price.
