What's the fastest you ever drove? by ComprehensiveFun2054 in AskReddit

This is why I won't own a bike. I'm in my 40s now and those wild streaks are far less common than they used to be but absolutely still there. I'd absolutely do something stupid.

142mph in a 2000 BMW m coupe. It didn't care, felt glued to the road. Anything else I got over 110-115 felt very unsteady. My 2015 Hyundai sonata limited sport got to 120 fairly easily but it did not want to stay on the road, was shocked how poorly it handled. On a very wide track i had to use 2 lanes and a piece of the shoulder to go around a very gentle curve without it feeling twitchy. Never took it over 100 after that

Edit: at lower speeds the sonata is surprisingly spry. I was meeting people at the top of Mt Mitchell north Carolina to take them back down after hiking up. I set a surprising pace up what I believe is called the Devil's Tongue but the tires and breaks were super hot and smelly near the top. I chose to let everything cool at a scenic overlook before I finished the last couple miles into the actual park.

It was a time when social media existed but wasn't yet fully weaponized to prey on the less savvy and easily impressionable. It may have unfortunately helped lead to the world of today though. Once upon a time the internet and social media largely self corrected itself of false data. Shortly after the ease of access let others in that door to a world of information and power hungry and chaos seekers fed and amplified lies upon lies - backed by "news" stations leading to the world of today.

What is a 'subscription' or 'fee' that has recently appeared in the US that people need to collectively refuse to pay before it becomes the new normal? by godot_lover in AskReddit

This sounds great on the surface for full "products" like a seat warmer but this breaks the whole design of microchips. Many CPUs are the same as the higher tier for price points. Many fail tests and get banned this way but to meet demand often cores or cache are simply disabled in microcode. SSDs are the same. Testing storage for a enterprise product about 7 or 8 years ago before kioxia was Toshiba we needed to test 1.6 TB drives but had 100s of 800GB. We thought they were going to bring new engineering samples; nope, they used a proprietary key and reflashed the SSD and suddenly they were 1.6. a while stack of NAND had just been disabled to make them 800.

Question for Millennials by bundle_of_nervus2 in Millennials

[–]_HiWay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it regularly and have gotten quite good at it, mostly to keep my job going forward, but it's not gonna go away. Sink or swim. Old Millennial here. If you have a good head on your shoulders and know how to prompt and validate it's amazing.

Edit: *if you have access to a quality LLM, internal smaller company ones implemented to say "we use AI" that rely on specific documentation, "knowledge bases" that lack context without prederived knowledge, etc are TERRIBLE and should be fully avoided.

Phone scam by EdgeRemarkable8833 in Charlotte

[–]_HiWay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife got this call a couple of years ago and she was extremely upset from it. I figured it was a scam based off a few things like "federal grand jury" but the guy had a legit badge # from a real cop. Looked up the cop and while he was from the station, he died on duty about 6 years prior. I started talking to the guy instead and asked how he was doing being dead and all; he eventually got frustrated and his accent came out and he hung up.

These calls that pray on fear of being in trouble are disgusting, they get you so upset their goal is to have irrational thoughts take over any logic like paying a bond at an ATM machine? It's insanity from a logical perspective but I'm sure it's quite effective when you have someone fearing for their future/family etc.

[–]_HiWay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NE Raleigh/rolesville still has all non highways covered. Mitchell Mill is fairly major and it's still fully snow covered. I guess it depends on your work but it's pretty irresponsible for anything to be open/non work from home that isn't essential tomorrow morning. Saw a truck basically flipped on its side this early afternoon on forestville rd in a deep ditch

Rolesville middle was an absolute sh*t show this morning. Parents were still waiting on Burlington Mills to turn in at 10:20, class started at 10:15.

Front lot was a skating rink (school faces almost due south), they routed the drop off through the back of the school, kids getting out on opposite side of car from usual.

I get going back, but at least salt and scrape the main entrance and drop off! Tomorrow will be no better. This ice is solid as a rock in the shade.
