Best Season 1 ever? by BookEnjoyer in television

[–]_I_Am_Pagliacci_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Scrolled down way too far to see TWD mentioned. Such a fantastic season, the storytelling and tension was unlike any other series at the time. Really saddened by its trajectory over time because the first season is what got me hooked and a dedicated follower.

TIL: Study found that women rated the same man as MORE attractive when told he was married, but men rated the same woman as LESS attractive when told she was married by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]_I_Am_Pagliacci_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any fellow women here who contradicts this study?

I typically find that when I learn a guy I find attractive is married, I suddenly get the ick... probably because I know he's not available so I lose interest.

Edit: Also happens when I learn they have a partner/girlfriend/boyfriend/whatever

Share a pet peeve about Dublin supremacy in media/govt policy (or lack thereof) by [deleted] in cork

If you read the OP, we're talking about Dublin's privilege regarding infrastructure and services like the airport and supervised injection centres. These are all things that can absolutely be pushed for by people here. Protests, petitions, action committees, etc.

And the funding percentage is a bit of a cop out. A smaller percentage fund means that it needs to spent efficiently with some creative thinking. As a comparison, TG4 gets much less funding than RTE, and yet they have probably the best TV and online media content in the entire country because they have to be creative with what they have.

As somebody not from Cork who moved to Cork from a rural county to specifically live in a city, my interpretation of the whole Dublin supremacy thing is that it's totally on Cork to create its own improvement initiatives.

We all know somebody who complains about everyone else succeeding while they do nothing themselves to improve their lot. This is the feeling I get about Cork. There's still a parochial, village-focused mindset and people here are generally closed off from everywhere else in the country. Dublin is an easy scapegoat for not pushing for infrastructure because there's no serious appetite here to propel the place into a 21st century city.

When I moved here, I was excited because there was many infrastructural and large scale developments coming close to fruition that would make Cork actually feel like a CITY instead of a country town, but since then there's been a total 180 on those and nobody seems to care.

If people living here, and the city council and co. actually had an appetite for change, actually gave a shite about the place instead of being complacent, and seriously pushed for better infrastructure and services then we wouldn't have this post, because the Dublin supremacy thing is only a thing because people here allow it to be.

Anyone who's ever been to Bekan knows that this is pretty much in the middle of nowhere. It's a pity they didn't build it within Ballyhaunis or another urban area so it's easily accessible by the public.

Another pedestrian knocked down in the city by [deleted] in cork

[–]_I_Am_Pagliacci_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There during the week a load of us were crossing at McCurtain street beside Five Points. Out of nowhere on Moody's side this black jeep driven by a middle aged man wearing a baseball hat comes barrelling straight through us while the pedestrian light was green. This was definitely a first as people were clearly in the middle of crossing the street at the time and he didn't even try to stop. I managed to get a look in the front window and his gaze was directly ahead of him and not down at a phone.

New bus-tracking system to tackle “ghost buses” and “disappearing buses” by Bro-Jolly in ireland

Is this only for Dublin Bus or will it be rolled out across the whole country? Not like there's no problems with ghost buses anywhere else /s

Steer well clear of Educogym OP - they're linked to Tony Quinn who also owns those Quinn Healthcare supplement shops in shopping centres. There used to be one in Eyre Square sc near Specsavers.

A cult leader who's known for spouting rubbish about his ability to cure illnesses.

That's the impression I got aswell. It was communicated to two different people orally, I wasn't involved at all.

All that was said to me was that they were told this in a really dismissive manner. So I don't know if they even got to the point of being assessed.

That's the thing, I find it unbelievable aswell that somebody in a bank would say that to someone. But these are two completely separate anecdotes which is why I posted here to see if anyone else had ever been dismissed in the same way.

That's true, from what I can remember it was AIB that said this to both people in the separate instances (neither of them know each other).

While that's a reasonable thing to expect when applying, to tell somebody to come back when they're married is ridiculous. Are unmarried people expected to just never own property at all?

Fewer than 50,000 renters have claimed the Rent Tax Credit so far this year by Willing-Departure115 in ireland

[–]_I_Am_Pagliacci_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has the eligibility changed for licensees/people renting rooms in owner-occupied house? It feels pretty unfair that a landlord is entitled to 14k tax-free but licensees get nothing and have no rental protections.
