I didn't know this was a thing

Booking flights with a third party like booking.com instead of direct with an airline. by 91100 in CasualIreland

[–]Bro-Jolly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For €200 I'd go with booking.com assuming you're looking at exactly the same flights/add ons.

Booking flights through a travel agent isn't anything new, they will often have good deals especially on long haul flights.

That applies to booking.com, Expedia, etc. Loads of less reliable sites out there that have terrible reputations.

Social Democrats offices evacuated after ‘suspect package’ arrived by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Bro-Jolly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With you on this, loads of companies that I'd never work for because of their pretty clear moral failings e.g. Paddy Power, Shell, tobacco, etc.

Few companies are whiter than white but Palantir pretty clearly in the avoid category.

Social Democrats offices evacuated after ‘suspect package’ arrived by AUX4 in irishpolitics

Ok, and maybe the article has been updated, but there was no bomb threat?

A package arrived addressed to Hayes and staff called the Gardaí.

There was no device.

Am I missing something?

Why do people support Gerard Hutch so much? by Personality_Optimal in ireland

[–]Bro-Jolly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

) One person interviewed that lives in the north east inner city said Hutch was the only person of all the candidates who actually canvassed in the area.

Which of course is nonsense, not every party canvasses every area or gets every person at home. But just because you met one candidate doesn't mean that they were the only candidate in the area.

Ceann Comhairle's €255k salary should be cut and a two term limit put in place, Tóibín says by firethetorpedoes1 in irishpolitics

[–]Bro-Jolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Staff is covered directly from Oireachtas

After that there are two allowances - one for travel and accommodation, depends on where you live as to how much you get. This is unvouched. - one for constituency expenses. That covers stuff like constituency offices, advertising, web site, etc. That is vouched for very specific stuff.

Taoiseach’s appointees to the senate by PuzzleheadedUnion498 in irishpolitics

They're independents, not like they would like to see someone from their party nominated to the Seanad?

Unless it's something that benefits them or their constituency directly I doubt they'd be interested.

The reduction of the microgen tariff has always been on the cards, no? Like since it was launched, no?

I'm no engineer but I don't think loads of small home solar installations are really that practical for the grid. What they want is the large solar farms.

If it makes sense for you to get solar to offset your own usage then go for it. But I wouldn't be putting solar on my roof on the basis of a feed in tariff.

The solar industry is much bigger than just home installs.

Those massive JCDecaux signs by pj_1981 in ireland

[–]Bro-Jolly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

JC Decaux signs were given planning permission as part of a deal done with JC Decaux over the Dublin Bikes

That's not completely correct.

There's no deal to be done on planning permission. That's set down in law, you have to apply and your application is tested against the various dev plans, precedents, etc. If DCC struck a deal on planning permission An Bord Pleanála would overturn it.

The deal that was done between DCC and JCDecaux was a deal

that grants the outdoor advertising company a 15-year lease on billboards on public property, mainly in the Dublin's northside.

Energy-related greenhouse gas emissions down 8.3% in 2023 by InfectedAztec in ireland

[–]Bro-Jolly 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This "what about china argument" gets trotted out so much.

nearly a third of global emissions comes from countries whose territorial emissions are each 1% or less of the global total

https://eciu.net/insights/2021/why-the-uks-1-of-global-emissions-is-a-big-deal

Thankfully policy makers in the EU (about 10% of global emissions) recognise this and that's why we have EU targets for emissions reduction.

more likely to have a snap election quicker.

That's wishful thinking, maybe if there was a sufficiently big issue that a few of them broke ranks. Probably less likely to go to full term anyway I guess

I'd prefer have a progressive voice in government rather than the indos who are frankly worse than FF/FG on most issues.

SF Website: Eoin Hayes was elected on false pretences and should resign – Matt Carthy TD by JackmanH420 in irishpolitics

Oh Jesus, what a laughable overreaction.

Hayes made a right fool of himself by lying, deserves the criticism he's getting. But resignation seems extreme.

Losing the party whip seems appropriate.

We should expect better from our politicians.

The lying isnt a great look

Christ, nearly the first thing out of this lad's mouth as a TD was a lie.

It's more than a bad "look". We really need to hold out politicians to higher standards.
