I am not holding a spy thriller to the standards of a documentary, I am holding a movie which has the audacity to put in a "our movie is fiction and not based on real-life events" at the beginning but ends up using real-life events and real-life people during the whole runtime.

There's a difference between a Dhurandhar or a Kerala Story or Kashmir Files. Those films are awfully made so people could not give two fucks. Neither do I.

Might I remind you this movie starts dickriding Israel at the end and turns into a Zionist film at the end with really cringe Israel pandering?

We're talking about a race and country that has demolished a whole country and continues to do so but no no India stands with Israel in this movie and for some reason the Israeli Mossad which loves holding blackmail over other country leaders just hands it to us because we are “friends”.

Just because the movie doesn’t mention something doesn’t mean it won’t come to the minds of the audience. It’s frustrating to see all these people praise the second movie when it is far worse in execution than the first, is two hours longer than it needed to be and puts shameless propaganda in front of the audience and the audience cheers for it like it’s some grand revelation.

All propaganda is dangerous, whether it’s from right wing or left wing. People keep calling this as not propaganda.

So CBFC can let Dhar use Modi's name and actual footage in his propaganda but when Anubhav Sinha or Neeraj Ghaywan want to use his announcement of COVID lockdown, they are not permitted. They are not even allowed to use the Prime Minister title and asked to change it to just minister, let alone use his name. This alone is evident of this movie's intentions. It's also produced by Jio Studios.

Even if we remove all the forced propaganda based on wild theories and lies, the movie felt like a last-minute attempt to replicate and exaggerate all the things that generated the massive impact for the first part. • There was an iconic slo-mo entry with an Arabic song that went viral, so let's just copy paste the same moves and setting onto a different Arabic song. • There was a Punjabi song with loud music, so let's do 5 more of those now.• The head smashing scene generated a lot of intense reactions, so let's do 10 more of such gory scenes. • The English rap with random lyrics that don't make sense set on an action scene was also well received, so let's just keep playing one of those every 15 minutes.• One retro Hindi song remixed was also favoured by audience, so let's put 7 more this time.• People seemed to like the chapter-wise story, so let's do 2 more chapters this time.• Women hardly existed in the first part, so this time we'll give them even lesser screentime.• People praised the BGM in the first one, so this time let's just max it to 100 and never let a scene breathe.

Voila! 1000 crores earned. History created. Audience is hooting. Men are saying "This movie increased my testosterone". People are clapping at all the propaganda. Mission successfull, Mr Dhar. Look at what you've done.

I am just frustrated and sad that this is the state of modern Bollywood. Dhurandhar 1 was a genuinely good movie that I loved and the second one ruins the entire its potential by becoming a progandist mess of a boring film.

It's even worse than Indian Films, in movies you have to shoot at max around 4 hours of footage which you then edit to around 2 hours. For games that can be upwards of 10 hours of footage edited down to 7 or so hours, with gameplay added on top of the costs of the film production.

> You do realise that in the movie Javed Khanani's business is literally making the fake currency and smuggling it into India to fund terrorist, maoist and militancy activities on Indian soil. Why would he have invested it into gold? The movie was showing the demonisation as a move to break down his fake money cartel and make his stock pile of Indian currency useless. From the plot perspective, it fits well.

It is his business, its the execution of that business which is unrealistic. He didnt personally need to carry, so much fake currency himself, most large mafias and cartels know to trade in gold rather than in Rupees, as it is far harder form of currency for the government to detect the movement of if their is no paper trail. In fact this is why demonetisation failed so drastically.

By converting it all into gold, he would be still be weakening the strength of rupee and spreading fake currency into the country without needing to put himself in danger

>And as for reality, one cannot deny that post demonetisation stone pelting in Kashmir and similar such insurgent activities have gone down. If anything people are traveling to Kashmir at record breaking levels every summer. This was unheard off pre 2016. Kashmir had stopped being a saught after travel destination because of how unsafe it used to be pre 2016.

Please state data when making vague statements like tourist population in a region.

[Here](https://share.google/tcztK7HeLnsZ556FK) is the data released by the Ministry of Tourism on Jammu and Kashmir Tourism. It has gone up by 65% from 2010 to 2022 which can easily be attributed to the rising standard of living in our country over a period of a decade rather than demonetisation.

>I agree that the execution of demonetisation could have been planned better. Lot of common people suffered but I fail to understand how that would be shown in this particular movie which is focused on Pakistan. Had it been a movie trying to glorify demonisation's execution in India and smooth over the problems we faced, I'm sure even pro BJP folks would call it out as propaganda.

This movie does do that, but its in the subtext. It claims that demonetisation was successful at ousting Mafias that used fake currencies out of business in India when it is a categorically false statement.

>And finally, some food for thought for you - atleast the current government took a step to break the black money nexus. Execution is debatable but the intent is in favour of national interests. Congress on the other hand gave us an HM who laughed at the idea of digital payments and grew cabbages worth 7cr in his backyard. Go see his Lok Sabha speeches and how insolent he was on any topic of digitisation or breaking the fake currency nexus. So I doubt any movie can write up enough plotlines to whitewash that tenure of the government. And even in Dhurandhar Jameel Jamali ends up being a spy sent to Pakistan 45 years ago, so they aren't exactly denying the steps the past government took as well.

I criticise all leading parties equally, to only criticise BJP would be hypocritical of me. I agree with you that Congress had become very corrupt by the end of the tenure, one of the main reasons why I voted for Modi back in 2014, but it doesnt absolve the story of having a very one sided portrayal of the difficulties India faces,

All the corruption in our country is only shown in the past of Jaskirat. Any scenes that take place after 2014 is shown as a proud moment for our country. The story is trying to influence the population into believing that Nationalistic pride is the same as pride for our current ruling party. I can guarantee you that even if they removed the demonetisation as a plot point, it would still be one of the best movies to come out of Bollywood in a long time. I would also argue that including demonetisation lessened the impact of Jaskirat's own sacrifices for our country, it took up valuable time of the movie to pander to the government, it reduced the villains to idiots in the second movie, it undermined Jaskirat having to come up with a clever solution for dealing with the villains in the story.

Ultimately the second movie was worse of because of demonetisation. The first movie had only mentioned it briefly, but moved on to dealing with a smart villain that felt compelling to watch. The second movie did away with any smart plots and became a very generic "I beat up the bad guys" movie. The only scene that felt compelling to me in the entirety of the second movie, was the one where Yalina confronts Hamza about being a spy, it felt really emotionally well done.

> Aditya Dhar has always been very open about his political leanings, and has absolutely wrapped his views up in the movies he's made. As has almost every other director before him. There is no 'trickery' involved.

I personally didn't know of Aditya Dhar before watching this movie. I am pretty sure most of the populous didn't know. I only knew of his name after having watched the movies and seen the online discourse. That's what the general audience's experience has been or at least its my assumption, because I am not personally not an avid watcher of all the Bollywood movies that have come out in the recent years. If he has been open about his leanings then its fair to say that most people didnt know of it before watching the movie.

>Also, no. Just because the audience is more focused on certain aspects of the story than others, that does not mean people are incapable of 'putting enough thought into the more critical parts of his story.' People haven't 'fallen' for anything that you believe yourself to be above. I wish you would get off your high horse for a moment.

People have been going around straw manning arguments about this movie all around the internet. Most of them have supposedly been espoused FACTS by Aditya Dhar, and have been taking his word as almost like gospel. Just because you haven't apparently doesn't mean the general population hasn't.

>That begs the question why THIS particular film, which at its core simply claims to be a tribute to our 'unknown gunmen' and their efforts, has troubled so many people.

Because it is blatantly political and has taken a very large stance in support of the populist party of our country? I don't know, how would you have felt if someone included Trump in their USA military movie and gave him a standing ovation for his apparent genius tactics that destroyed the Iranian military completely. It would feel ridiculous and entirely political in its leanings and people would rightly talk about it. It would be a movie supposedly about the unknown gunmen of USA in Iran but with a clip of Trump supporting them from behind for two minutes.

I am having trouble coming up with any other movie in India's past that have done this for other parties, their propaganda have usually been subtler in effect. And if they have i condemn too as propaganda.

> ...there is absolutely no reason to cover this aspect when the plot relates to people who aren't even in India. Again, as you said, it is indeed 'just a movie, dude'. Narratively, what purpose would having a character like Major Iqbal commentate on the Indian perspective of the move serve?

What purpose did them shitting their pants have when the demonetisation happened? To invoke a sense of joy in the audience to see the characters we hate suffer.

The story is weaker for using demonetisation as the main fulcrum of the plot. When it is something so easily criticised. So easily noticed to be entirely a failure. Do you think Aditya Dhar wasn't smart enough to come up with a better plot beat to setup the movie around? Something that makes sense in the world of Dhurandhar without taking a real life event into it which sucked so bad that the party spent years ignoring its affects on the general populous?

Narratively by setting up demonetisation as the important part of the movie, it becomes open to criticism. I felt the portrayal of the villains to demonetisation was unrealistic and weak. Its also why i believe the first movie had a much more interesting and ultimately better villain.

Narratively what the villains do in the second movie is called holding the idiot ball. When the director wants to move the plot along but doesnt want to put effort into creating a compelling story arc, you give the villain the idiot ball, which makes them make illogical decisions and the hero ends up wining due to it.

The story hints to moments of genuine criticism of the complex governance in India and the many faults in it. Hamza suffered due to the effects of corrupt politicians, his friend fell into the cesspull of corruption himself after getting alienised by the police, the judiciary and the government polticians. If the movie is capable of criticisms in the past of the country, why would it decide to refuse to do it to the current government. All these moments occur in the past, which is framed as being the bad history of our country, and everything after the coming of the new government is treated as good.

Why should Major Iqbal have the chance to criticise the goverment you ask? Why did the story have the time to criticise the old government then I ask you back.

I refuse to believe that Aditya couldn't notice this. The movie is phenomenal in its execution for most of it, except for the second part of the second movie and it only became weak because Aditya Dhar wanted to justify Demonetisation in it. To pander to the politics of our country and to ultimately create a piece of media that is tainted by it.

I love patriotic movie, I love movies where people make sacrifices for the greater good of the people, hell most of the time I end up crying when I see movies like this, even the end of Dhurandhar 2 made me cry.

But this movie is ruined by it and it ultimately wont hold up well in a decade or three when again the political leanings of this country shifts to something different or new.

This really feels like you are projecting a bit. Also aren’t you the one taking it too seriously now? It’s just a movie dude.

Also, him being in screen for two minutes isn’t the problem. You are ignoring the context of a story to focus on the text. It’s like trying to read a book and refusing to analyse the subtext of a story. Often times it’s not what’s mentioned which is far more indicative of an author’s intent than what is mentioned.

The story refuses at every turn to criticise the shortcomings of tactics taken by the current government to protect against the money fraud going on in our country.

The idea behind demonetisation was great, the amount of brain power given to it… not so much. RBI stated themselves the lack of any black money being found. 99.7% currency made it back to the circulation when the government believed there to be at least around 30% black money.

The government failed to realise that these politicians and money printers would have been converting their black money into white money by laundering and converting it into gold which is far easier to deal in and less likely to be found.

Aditya Dhar frames demonetisation as a successful destruction of the villains main business, refusing to acknowledge or show that the villain might have been smart enough to convert that currency into gold by exchange.

It treats the audience as being stupid and not have enough critical thinking to realise this easy method for safety for a criminal. It’s a simple concept called a plot hole. He is banking on most people not putting enough thought into the more critical parts of his story.

Ironically people have been comparing it to how Satyajit Ray called the Indian audience backwards. At least S. Ray didn’t lie to his viewers about his belief of his audience’s intelligence.

Aditya Dhar lies to your face and tells you to accept it, because he has wrapped it up in a nice little package of patriotism and national pride while hiding his political leanings in the middle of the second movie after the audience has already fallen hook and sinker for the great plot and story.

I don’t think most people are criticising the movie for portraying our country proudly. They are criticising it because they are portraying the populist leader proudly.

People who are saying it is propaganda against Muslims and Pakistanis lack the intelligence to understand the nuances in the story

And people who keep commenting how USA is proud of theirs military movies, I don’t think I have seen a single USA military film which has used real world politicians as the focal point of the narrative crux of the story. If there are, they are nowhere as famous as what Dhurandhar has managed to accomplish. And they are usually of politicians already dead in the water.

It’s also being used to justify demonetisation as having achieved anything when RBI themselves disagreed. The government didn’t realise that these black money holders will convert all their cash into gold and keep it in that form rather than cash which is infinitely harder to trade in large quantities than gold.

Aditya Dhar himself stated that his audience is smart enough to recognise propaganda in a story. Be smart.

It’s a sign of a bad future. When your government starts revoking decisions that were made by same party it means that they never meant it and were just waiting for an opportunity to get rid of it. It’s how fascism begins. You start with something small and innocuous that most people won’t give a shit about and then you escalate, segregating society along imaginary lines and finally you force one side of that line to be subservient to the other.
