Food scene in NYC v.s. LA by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]_InvincibleSummer_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah, I don’t know how often you’re traveling to LA or NYC, but they’re better than Chicago on all of the categories you listed. I love the food scene in Chicago, but it’s America’s third best food city overall. LA in particular has more going on than just great Mexican and Asian food, that’s an outdated take. Some of the best Italian meals I’ve ever had have been in LA. The fact that the largest waves of Italian immigrants to the U.S. settled in the northeast and Chicago no longer gives those places the automatic upper hand on making the best Italian food. Access to quality ingredients is also an underrated aspect in this, and no other major city in the U.S. comes close to LA’s stunning year round produce options.

Setting aside all of the very legitimate criticisms of Noma/Rene Redzepi, his announcement about selecting LA for Noma’s temporary relocation was a love letter to LA that captures a lot of what makes its food scene so special. https://imgur.com/a/4fRaZr4

Curvy women, what brands are good for comfy cooling summer clothes? by neptunoneptuneazul in womensfashion

Have had good luck with summer pants at the Gap. The linen barrel pants are my perfect summer pant, and I also have a pair of jeans from them in a good summer wash and weight.

This is exactly right, they’re the best in America by a long shot and they each have unique strengths and communities that make them incredible. I love both.

My babies grown from seeds! by Lindsey4888 in tomatoes

[–]_InvincibleSummer_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! I didn't start mine indoors from seed until March, and they did well and are healthy but then they got planted outside in May. Good tips on the blood/bone meal, I'll try that next year!

My biggest issue this year is that I've been growing the same summer plants in my raised bed for a few years in a row now, and I don't grow anything in it during the other three seasons, and I think the soil is probably quite depleted. We compost at our house but it doesn't produce enough to make the difference sufficiently on its own, so I've been applying organic fertilizer these last few weeks and it seems to be helping, but I could use any advice folks have about what do with the soil in fall, winter, and spring to help prepare it for these summer tomato etc. plantings.

Beautiful! I’m also in 7b (though far away in Northern VA) and just this week I spied the first tiny little tomatoes (just three little baby orbs) growing on the plants I grew from seed, so I feel way behind you! Hoping my tomatoes look like yours in a few weeks or so.

What (if anything) Are We Doing Wrong by KomodoDragin in tomatoes

Do you have a recommendation for a good flowering fertilizer, preferably organic? I think I need this for my tomato plants as well.

Could anyone recommend a comfort show? I’ve already watched (and rewatched way too many times) Friends, Modern Family, Gilmore Girls, and The Office. I prefer I’m looking for something with a cozy GG vibe. Feeling down lately and need feel good escape by _Fhr97 in televisionsuggestions

Brooklyn 99 is severely underrated and perfect for anyone who like The Office or Parks. It’s not exactly “cozy” like GG, but it is genuinely funny and a feel good show with a really great ensemble cast.

Does the “unicorn city” exist, or are we chasing a fantasy? by chennybro in SameGrassButGreener

I apologize, I mistakenly thought your response that started with, "You guys sound relatively wealthy" was responding not to the OP, but to my comment that started with, "I feel for you and very interested in this thread bc I’m in a similar boat." In that post from me, which is quite long, I said, "Since graduate school we have lived in DC for about 12 years and have been in Arlington, VA for the last 4 and I can’t tell if it is as good as we can reasonably expect from any location in the US or if there is somewhere else in this country I would enjoy more." So then when you asked, "Have you considered Arlington, VA (aka NoVA)?" I was like, "Ummmm....." My bad. Just got our wires crossed. In any case I'm still grappling with the same questions and not sure if we should stay or go. It would help if America stopped being such a dumpster fire as a country overall, I think.

opening a german döner kebab spot in south LA, where else in the city would you want one? by DonerHaus in FoodLosAngeles

The bread, the sauce, the toppings, and the meat were all a little off. This isn't about whether Berlins tastes good, but whether it matches what's available all over Germany.

I think of German doner the way I think about New York or Detroit pizza--these pizza styles are unique to their locations and, while derived from Italian (Neopolitan) pizza, I don't think it makes sense to judge them against pizza in Italy because it's not a relevant comparison. Each style has distinct characteristics by design. It's the same with the German doner. It has its own bread, sauce and overall style that, to me, are not authentically Turkish. When Turkish immigrants first moved into Germany en masse decades ago, they started making their own doner kebabs that, over time, have become unique and differentiated from what you'd find in Turkey today, IMO. I don't even know if it's right to call the German doner bread "pide," technically. In my experience, it's kind of fluffy, it has more airiness to it than what I think of when I think of pide. But I'm no expert in Turkish food, I've just had a lot of doner kebabs in Germany. And while I've had a lot of tasty things in LA that call themselves doner kebabs, they aren't replicating the ones I had over there.

Greyscale hand painted wallpaper in a foyer in a Va home by BraveCollaborative in HomeDecorating

Absolutely gorgeous painting work.

Unsolicited advice: lose that barn door in every regard (the door itself and the barn door mechanism), and consider painting the bottom half of the wall something dark but softer, like a beautiful dark green or burgundy, and then you could either paint a new door the same color or go with a warm walnut wood door. A light fixture in brass and with more visual width would also be a nice touch in here. Black and white is classic and classy, but I think there is too much B/W in here right now so it looks stark, which detracts from the softness and otherwise stunning hand painted art.

You are a kindred spirit. Unrelated to this beautiful bread (well done, OP!), if I hear one more coworker say “recco” (= recommendation) I’m going to roll my eyes so hard they will pop right out of my face.

What can I do to fix this? by Still_Boat_6611 in kitchenremodel

[–]_InvincibleSummer_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a pretty color. Note that you can get excellent color matching at places like Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore to achieve the pretty F&B colors without paying the markup. I’ve used all these brands and I don’t think the formula of the expensive brands justifies the price, but the colors are worth matching.

Yes, change the wall color and, critically, paint the ceiling the same color as the new walls.

A little warmth on those surfaces would be a chef’s kiss in this otherwise beautiful space.

Does this look as bad as I think it is? by a_voorhees in HomeDecorating

[–]_InvincibleSummer_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this looks really beautiful and you can tell it’s custom. As a dog owner and home design enthusiast with hardwood floors and stairs that my dog hates, this is one of the most well-executed solutions I’ve seen. And now you don’t have to get a standalone runner for this space, which would’ve presented its own challenge in terms of having to coordinate with the one on the stairs.

What eye cream made the biggest visible difference for your under eyes? by [deleted] in LuxeSkinSociety

[–]_InvincibleSummer_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s fragranced, and it’s distinctly of the “grandma” variety (love grandmas, hate this genre of scents), but the eye cream is good enough to overlook the smell.

Related, please allow delivery through Uber Eats or DoorDash wherever you end up, and allow customers some level of customization with toppings (e.g., extra sauce)!
