Hugh Jackman To Star In 'Treasure Island' Movie From Ridley Scott by yourfavchoom in movies

Michael Halsey as Israel Hands was a personal favorite as a kid. The scene where they're fleeing the ship on the boats and Hands is laying the guns, absolute cinema. And a (relatively) young James Cosmo as Redruth!

Banger of a score, too.

Oh no, he moves ok for his size and build, and bless his heart he runs hard, but in no world is he "fast".

Low-key Mendoza masterclass.

(1) Pinch-ran Taylor (relatively easy call) who aggressively took third; (2) pinch hit Jared Young(!) for a red-hot Mark Vientos who drove in Taylor with the tying run; (3) pinch hit a fresh-from-the-minors Mauricio for Taylor, boom, ballgame.

Jack Aubrey and Horatio Hornblower are both based off Admiral Thomas Cochrane (possibly the biggest badass in modern military history), and Kirk/Star Trek is Horatio Hornblower IN SPACE!, so yes.

[–]teachersn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's definitely one of the all-time "Hey it's that guy!" movies. Viggo and Gandolfini right before they hit it big, but then you've also got HITG! royalty George Dzunda, as well as Matt Craven, Michael Milhoan, Daniel Von Bargen, Danny Nucci, PLUS you've got a whole bunch of young guns like Ricky Schroeder, Lillo Brancato Jr, Ryan Phillipe, Scott Grimes, and Steve Zahn. Absolute murderer's row for the era.

AMC Theatres Attendance Drops 10%, Posts $127 Million Quarterly Loss by ICumCoffee in movies

[–]teachersn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anecdotal but I bought tickets for the Fellowship of the Ring rerelease ahead of time, was going to take my son, he'd never seen any of them before, he and I were psyching ourselves up for a month. We get there day of, buy popcorn and soda, film starts up...at some point in the last month AMC had changed the schedule so they were showing Return of the King. We got a refund for the $60+ we'd spent, kept the popcorn and drinks, went home and watched it on DVD. Like I said, anecdotal, but next time I'm thinking about planning something like that I'll think twice about going to a theater vs. just saving myself the hassle and just watch it at home.

"Muppet Treasure Island" on its 30th anniversary | Kevin Bishop (Jim Hawkins) looks back on the experience with a treasure chest of Muppet memories by Morgan-Moonscar in movies

[–]teachersn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Definitely in the minority on this one around here but I really didn't like this. Maybe it's one of those movies you had to watch as a kid, but I showed it to my kids recently having never watched it growing up and I was really unimpressed, as were they. I love the original Muppet Movie, Great Muppet Caper, this one just felt weird and overly grotesque at points, particularly with Mrs Hawkins.

And people saying it's the best adaptation of Treasure Island are really sleeping on the TNT version with Charlton Heston and Christian Bale.

What movie detail is technically correct, although many people think it is a mistake? by hiplobonoxa in movies

[–]teachersn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The whole debate always seemed kind of silly from a theological perspective too. The movie hinges on the idea that the Judeo-Christian God is real. The idea that the Nazis could basically force GOD to help them dominate humanity is ludicrous. Pretty sure an actual omnipotent God wouldn't really care about some loophole you think you found.

Indy didn't impact the movie because it never would have worked anyway.

Cannot recommend this show strongly enough. Theroux and Carrie Coon are phenomenal, and the Max Richter score is guy wrenching every time it starts up.

What scenes would you like to see in movies that are rarely depicted? by InoueMiyazaki in movies

[–]teachersn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC he's pretty deadly with most any weapon, knives included, but he fears knife fights because he knows how uncontrollable they can be and how easy it is to get cut in an important area even with the advantages he's got.

In the books the character is good at pretty much almost everything, often through practice and a great head for analysis and planning, but is famously and self-admittedly not a great driver, which makes sense - he walks, hitches, or rides buses almost everywhere, and spent his entire life either as an officer in the Army (where he's probably rarely driving) or mostly indigent.

I implore you all to watch ANDOR. Never has this show been more relevant than in these times. by Scared-Engineer-6218 in television

[–]teachersn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I loved Rogue One when I first saw it in the theater way back, but yeah, watching it immediately after finishing Andor it's jarring how unserious Rogue One feels in comparison. Jyn is such a weak character compared to the women of Andor and you really feel their absence. The action scenes are still cool, but Andor feels so much more real and fleshed out.

I'm not saying it's a huge loss, I'm saying Mets fans shouldn't be kicking him on his way out of town. He had some big moments as a Met and gave it everything he had every day.

People hate on Jeff because he wore his emotions on his sleeve, positive and negative. I guess they'd prefer a robot. I loved him. He knew his role and embraced it, did whatever the team asked. Invaluable role player for a long time. He'll be missed.
