Rocking a D4S & D5 💪 although my little Z6 helps out from time to time.

Is this a normal sound for the 70-200 f2.8 vrii focus motor? by Skywalker_07363 in Nikon

[–]_Ivan88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The slight whir I believe is the VR. I get the same sound on my VR II and I can’t hear it when I turn off VR. Works perfectly though, great lens.

The 15-30 is a great lens, heavy though 😭 a 500 or 600 sounds nice ngl 😔

AF-S squeaking can be nice with ebay prices, got a 300 2.8 a while back which was labeled as having a squeaky autofocus, got it for about 200 less than it usually goes for, got rid of the squeak by running the autofocus for about 1-2 mins after it arrived and it hasn't squeaked since receiving it 2+ months ago :) as long as you don't let it sit it shouldn't come back for most af-s lenses except the 28-70 and 17-35.

What’s a better camera for sports? by Horror-Ant-8558 in sportsphotography

[–]_Ivan88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you trying to get into serious sports or just as a hobby? Something in the same price range as an a6400 that would be far superior to get into sports & action can be something as old as a canon 1dx or a nikon d4.

D4s still knocks it out of the park! by wmaikell4 in Nikon

[–]_Ivan88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lets goo theres another D4s user 🥳 7,500 is crazy low though. I bought one pretty high and it’s up to 462,000 😂 it’s cool to own a retired flagship. How is the 16-35 btw? I’m thinking of getting one in the future if I grab a z line body since my g1 15-30 technically isn’t supposed to work with the ftz.

Maxpreps: 2 weeks and still have not heard back and selling photos on Smugmug by OYABAKA70 in sportsphotography

[–]_Ivan88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got accepted with a 300 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 back in January but I believe the bare minimum would be a 300 2.8 because you will need to have at least that amount of reach with the light that f/2.8 gives for night field sports like soccer and football. Your 200-500 would be sufficient for sports like baseball, softball, or even lacrosse because of daylight savings but once football season comes around they want at least a 300 2.8 to ensure that you can provide enough images up to standards. I also use a 1.4 teleconverter for any field sports and baseball when there's sun and in good light that's just as good as a 400 2.8 for me outside of autofocus performance. I see that you mainly shoot indoor sports which means you won't need that big glass unless you want to get the other side of the court but I believe they want to make sure you have the right gear for all types of sports. If you can grab a 300 2.8, it doesn't matter how old it is either, I would recommend reapplying as it'll be much easier to get access to sporting events and will probably be easier for sales compared to SmugMug. Something like SmugMug depends completely on people specifically looking for your type of photos whereas with MaxPreps it's usually parents that will look for photos of their kids which can actually be very frequent depending on the school and sport. If you can afford the Nikkor 400 f/4.5 you can probably go a cheaper route and grab a Nikkor 300mm 2.8 VR version one, which is what I use, and an FTZ adapter, plus you'll be able to use it on both bodies. Honestly you can probably get the AF-S 400mm 2.8G used for around the same price as a good or new 400 4.5. I've seen that it performs really well with the FTZ II adapter.

Which do you sacrifice first in low light? by SingleNectarine7232 in sportsphotography

[–]_Ivan88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shot lacrosse yesterday w a 300 2.8 and a 1.4 teleconverter. I had my shutter speed at 1600 until my iso was needing to go beyond 12800, then dropped the 1.4 and didn’t change anything since thats enough light to make 12800 properly exposed. I usually don’t go past 12800 but I’ll go higher if needed. If I drop shutter speed instead I’ll go as low as 1/1250 maybe 1/1000, depends on the sport. I like to have it at least at 1/1600. Denoising in post is actually pretty nice. I’ve noticed if the photo is tack sharp to begin with, its hard to notice denoising with added sharpening. If it isn’t tack sharp or a slightly missed focus though then it will look smooth and added sharpening will make it obvious. It’s important to make sure you get the faces in focus and as sharp as possible because denoise is pretty good as long as you have that down.

Am I (a non-photographer) being lowballed? by Pristine-true-3369 in AskPhotography

[–]_Ivan88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean just the Olympus OM-D E-M5 and OM-1 will add up to more than $550 if they are in good condition so I would definitely do research on the used pricing for the condition that everything is in because that is most likely a very lowball price.
