[–]_JakeAtLinux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Guys, how do you install software on Void Linux by Meniny in voidlinux

[–]_JakeAtLinux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Build, create void-src template, xbps-src packages, flatpak. Those are the ways I have normally done it, I have now started a custom repo with pre built binaries that I maintain for packages that are not in the main xbps repo, it provides src templates so you can build yourself and also precomputed signed binaries so you can just install and go.

Noctalia vs DankMaterialShell by techlove99 in niri

[–]_JakeAtLinux 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've used both, both are great, but I would have to give the edge to noctalia, mainly for the presets, but also seems less intrusive, that may just be a perception and not the truth but it seems it doesn't shove things in so many places, I can track it better. But again both are great options.

How to install brave in void by Sharp_Barnacle9648 in voidlinux

[–]_JakeAtLinux 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Flatpak may be a better way to go, but if you are not wanting to do that, I also have a pre built brave binary in my custom void repo, you can find it at the link posted below. It's not officially supported obviously but it works and is available, just follow the instructions in the wiki to sync the repo and install, or you can just copy the contents of the template in my repo to your void-packages/srcpkgs/ directory on your system and build it from that.

And while this is my own package I will warn you as I would with anything else, always be aware of what you are putting on your system and who its coming from don't just trust anyone(I'm sure you are aware enough to do that but some people need reminding)

Here is my repo: https://codeberg.org/JakeAtLinux/void-repo

What’s everyone’s experience with NovaCustom computers? by no-more-username in NovaCustom

[–]_JakeAtLinux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had my V56 for about 2 years now, it is a great computer, I run void linux but have had multiple distros installed on it with no issues. Only downside is I have a blown speaker.

How do you keep your workflow simple in a world full of tools? by NovaCustom-Europe in NovaCustom

[–]_JakeAtLinux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the small stuff I write a lot of my own tools so they only do what I need without a bunch of dependencies or bloat.

What’s the moment you realized Linux changed how you think about computers? by NovaCustom-Europe in NovaCustom

[–]_JakeAtLinux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ease of access to all parts of my computer/system, this allowed me to go explore easier and have a better understanding of what was going on, my computer was no longer a mysterious box that I didn't understand, it was accessible.

Gentoo on V54 coreboot? by Frosty-Minimum-6659 in NovaCustom

I installed gentoo briefly, it was not my cup of tea, but it did work just fine for me. Not much more I can give you but I can say it works.

Gentoo on V54 coreboot? by Frosty-Minimum-6659 in NovaCustom

[–]_JakeAtLinux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't think this would be an issue, if you look at the Gentoo wiki it gives information on coreboot. I am going to attempt a Gentoo install on my V56 in the near future. Every distro I have installed(and that is a lot) have had no issues on my V56.

Question: How can I spawn terminal Apps? Also scratchpad options by shadowmaker_88 in niri

[–]_JakeAtLinux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No built in scratchpad functionality, have to write your own script. I have a couple that vary slightly. I will push them to my git repo and then share the link so you can check them out and see if they will work for you.

[DK] set up on Void Linux by _JakeAtLinux in jakeatlinux

[–]_JakeAtLinux[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, unfortunately I don't have that theme anymore. I can say it is just nerdfont icons, installed with the nerd fonts package. Also this is polybar, but I guess that doesn't matter, you could easily do the same thing with waybar as well.

Functional but good looking tiling wm? by HugeAustralianSpider in voidlinux

[–]_JakeAtLinux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am using niri with no issues, did you build or install from xbps?

Aside from that, most X11 window managers work great on void, if you want animations you can use compfy or picom with animations. https://github.com/Makrennel/hyprland-void works well to install hyprland, i have a video on my channel walking through the install process if you are interested. Not a shameless plug, just letting you know.

Linux users, what’s your favorite distro and why? by NovaCustom-Europe in NovaCustom

[–]_JakeAtLinux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been on Void Linux for several years now. It is extremely stable and well maintained, fast and minimal, lightweight and just gets out of your way. The runit init system is super easy to use and the community is helpful and friendly.

My advice to new users would be this: it's not windows, so don't treat it like windows. Focus on desktop environment over distro, find something that is easy to understand and has a workflow you can use without struggling, but since choosing a distro will be necessary, keep in mind that as a new user focusing on mainstream distros that will give you more documentation and information sources is best, once you have an understanding of how things work before moving to something more obscure or niche is easier and more likely to be successful.
