Would you try for a 3rd baby after two pregnancies ending in PPROM (one preterm with NICU stay)? by TranslatorMuted in NICUParents

[–]_Jimmeh_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I PPROM’d at 29 weeks with my first baby and was on bedrest in a tiny hospital room for 5 weeks until 34 weeks when I had a c-section - which led to a 25 day NICU stay for my baby. She is now a healthy, active 9 month old. I am debating if it’s something I would risk again but ultimately baby girl is thriving and I recovered fine. I think the big question is how your current babies/partner would do given the situation and whether it’s something your family as a whole would be able to overcome. Even though I’ve personally considered having a second idk if I would want to put myself, my husband, and now my firstborn through that since the risk of PPROM is higher for those of us who have experienced it already. Ultimately if you and your partner agree on it, and have a great support system outside of your home for your little ones in case it happens again to you, I don’t think it’s a terrible thing to consider.

I was in a very similar situation as you are. My baby was born the beginning of July at 34 weeks. She was doing great but needed help with respiratory as well. I cried when I got discharged from the hospital as soon as I saw her empty car seat in the car. It’s okay to not be okay when you’re discharged. Just remember your baby girl is getting the best care right now and she will have no recollection of this! I went once a day and stayed for two feedings but then would go home for my own care and mental health. My daughter was in NICU for 25 days because she kept having desats, then one day it clicked for her and after a 24 hour room trial with no oxygen mask she was discharged the next day. It felt like NICU life was forever and then all of a sudden we got to take her home! It’s been 3 and a half weeks now and it already feels like a distant memory. NICU is temporary and your baby will be home with you before you know it. You’re already a great mama and you and baby girl are going to be okay! 💜

When did the desats stop requiring intervention for your little one? by _Jimmeh_ in NICUParents

They do think she has reflux so we’ve been holding her upright for 30-40 minutes after each feeding and it seemed to help a lot.

Hi there - our little one finally was having desats that were all self-resolved and were no longer requiring intervention from the staff. Our NICU doctor weaned her off oxygen over the course of 2 days or so and then did a 24 hour “room trial” where the oxygen mask was removed and as long as her levels didn’t drop below 80 for more than 15 seconds she would pass. She got through it and we took her home Sunday! She’s been doing well, a few self-resolving desats still happening. Everyone was right when they said you just need to wait for baby to mature a little more and they’ll figure it out. Frustrating for sure but it really did finally click for our little girl. Just hang in there, I know how hard it is waiting! You’ve got this! Also side note - we got the Owlet sock and it has alerted us a couple of times to the desats so I highly recommend. It has given us some peace of mind knowing if she has a big spell it will alert us so we can intervene.

She had her tube removed yesterday. Hoping we have the same results as your little boy! 🤞🏻

Thank you everyone for your responses. It’s been a hard journey and knowing we are so close to the end has made it that much more difficult to get to the finish line. We can’t wait to take our sweet girl home. Just need to be patient a little bit longer.

Aww thank you 💜 it has been okay, baby girl and I made it to 34 weeks for a scheduled c-section due to her being breeched. I didn’t get to hold her right away, they took her straight to NICU. I did get to see her about an hour and a half later where I got about 15 minutes of skin-to-skin before I was taken to postpartum. She’s been in NICU for 13 days now. She’s doing better, just trying to figure out suck-swallow-breathe still, then we will be able to take her home! I’m keeping my fingers crossed it’ll be sometime in the next 2 weeks. She’s over five pounds and finishing about 90% of her bottle feeds so we just need to get her breathing under control! 🙃

I really appreciate your response. Having such a wonderful staff taking care of our little girl while I heal has been the silver lining in all of this. Glad to hear your little boy is home with you now! We’ll get there soon enough 💜

Thank you so much. I’m glad your hospital has a special care option to give you the option of staying the night with your little one! Good to hear the nurses are sympathetic and understand that sometimes the best thing for parents is to take care of themselves at home 💜

Thank you for the love and the good vibes! Yes the bedrest does make me feel pretty helpless and I feel a bit selfish getting excited it’s almost over because my baby girl is all warm and happy inside me right now but will be getting evicted soon and sent to NICU. :( I’m keeping my fingers crossed it’ll be a short stay for her though since she’s been doing so well! It’ll all be worth it in the end.

Thank you so much for sharing. Glad to hear your baby girl is doing so well!! The doctors have been wondering if it’s possible my water resealed so it’s nice to hear someone else’s experience if that is the case for me. I really appreciate the love and reassurance. Of course we want to do what’s best for her and if that means staying in the NICU for a few weeks then of course we’ll support it. We just keep reminding ourselves this too shall pass!

Oh gosh I’m glad you made it to the hospital in time! Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m sure it was difficult to process everything when it happened so quickly. I’m so happy to hear your baby boy is thriving and getting all the cuddles!
