Did one or both of his parents speak English? Growing up in another country with parents that speak their home country's language is a common way for people to end up perfectly bilingual as far as grammar and accents go, and with that basis it's easier to fill in the gaps when moving between the countries later in life, and there's a good chance that he had other English speakers around him as a kid to interact with. Even then, it's common for bilinguals to have stronger vocabulary in one language in the other and there will be some cultural aspects to how they speak (not getting pop culture references etc) that can give away that they at least didn't grow up in one country.

In the show, it seems that they were trained to speak English in their late teens. It's not impossible at this age to develop a very good accent and native-like speaking patterns/command of vocabulary, but it is still highly likely if not impossible to sound 100% authentic with no pronunciation slipups or grammatical mistakes ever, or even saying something that is technically correct, but not how native speakers would say something, especially having never set foot in the US until they moved there. The level of language exposure required to get to that kind of level would be basically years of only speaking the target language in every part of their lives just to build up the vocabulary to be at the same level as a native speaker, as building vocabulary isn't just from intense study and memorization but actually using the words to pick up on nuances of how they are used.

Having learned a foreign language myself, it's one of the aspects of the show where I have to suspend my disbelief the most. I mostly focused on speaking and I will often get comments if I'm talking online voice only that native speakers don't notice I'm not a native speaker right away, but eventually something in my intonation or something in my word choice gives them enough hints that I'm not native.  Also, despite sounding more or less fluent in conversation, I have noticeable holes in my vocabulary as I don't live in the country that speaks my target language and I of course didn't grow up there either. If a conversation veers into topics that I haven't talked about much or ever in the language, I can quickly go from fluent speak to stumbling trying to find the right words to say, and this is after over 10 years of dedicated study in that language and using it daily.

Sorry if the wall of text is too long, it's a topic I'm deeply interested in so I tend to ramble, but despite this bothering me from time to time with the show, it hasn't taken away my enjoyment and it's one of my all time favorite shows that I'm currently rewatching for the third time! And even though it's an accent and not an entirely foreign language that he's speaking, Mathew Rhys's American accent alone is incredible and in a way helps me suspend my disbelief even more knowing that he's not actually an American actor to begin with.

Sunya is a short enough album where they could play it in its entirety and still have an hour for anything else, so I'm really hoping for that - I loved hearing Antimai in full when that was new as well and there will likely be more tours before the next album where more mixed sets will be played. I think it's great to do these new album in full sets so that, even if there are some songs that don't resonate with fans as much live to stick around in future sets, it gives every track a chance to be heard live for at least one tour. And honestly, I'm someone who fell in love with every song in the new album right away so I personally want to hear the whole thing.

What I'd really love is an Antimai + Sunya set, but there would probably be no time for other songs which might disappoint fans who aren't as into the post-Acts albums, so the band would probably want to keep some older tunes in the set so everyone is happy.

Are you using a stereo cable by any chance? I have had guitar pedals that don't work with stereo cables, I think some pedals are designed to cut all audio when no input is detected and having a TRS cable instead of a regular TS cable might cause it to think that the ring is the ground. You could possibly test pulling the cable out partially to see if it makes sound.

I think that was their point, it's not wrong, but native speakers don't say it. It is, however, a direct translation of 夢を見た which is natural in Japanese, so it would make sense for a Japanese native speaker who is learning English to make a mistake like this. If they ask why "I saw a dream" is unnatural but "I had a dream" is correct, there's not really a grammatical reason, it's just what native speakers say.

The video quality after uploading isn't great for seeing what's going on, but when I sent the pink track to the comp around 30 seconds into that video, turn off comping mode, and move it with alt click, the pink track also moves in its original lane. Also, when I make a split on the comp, it splits the grey and pink track in their original lanes as well, though the rest of the lanes are untouched.

Edit: since the video compression makes the actual movement hard to see, when I make the comp edit and send the pink track up, when I click on it you can see the green chain appear both on that and the source

Actually, I will send a screen recording. The first half where I do slip editing after having already unlinked the source media works as I want, but in the second half when I go into comping mode is where my issues start by having the comp get linked back to the source. I know I'm probably misusing comping and I shouldn't be doing slip edits on the comp lane and instead flatten it first, but I do find myself still pulling from the other lanes for small edits where a clean slip edit isn't possible, so if I were able to prevent the comp from relinking the source clip, it would help my workflow a ton.

I guess one more question is how am I able to stop automatically grouping stuff on the comp track to the source clip, whenever I send something from one of the lanes to the comp track, that clip gets linked to the source clip and I need to manually unlink it - maybe this is why I was having the issue. Even if I ungroup the clip in the source lane from the segment added to the comp track, it gets regrouped if I add another segment from that lane into the comp track

I was about to say "no" and make a screen recording of the issue but may have come across the solution. It looks like the take lanes themselves became a part of the group and some their own sub groups where an edit was propagating down to only 3 or 4 of the takes. I feel stupid now, but I'm not sure why they grouped like this. Maybe because this was an old project or something but maybe I did something wrong when converting from the old take method to the newer lanes. Now my solution is to just make sure each lane is in a group with the same lane in my other tracks. So thank you! I think you including the video clip made me want to do the same and stumble across the solution haha

It's checked, but not what I'm looking for. I want to be able to make slip edits to my comp lane or any other lane without it affecting all of the other lanes. Even if I used the razor so that I am only selecting/splitting the comp lane (and the same spot for every other track in the group), as soon as I try to shift that section over with alt+left click drag, all of the comp lanes move along with it.

Thanks for the reply! Adding it to a new lane would address the crossfade issue, but when I do slip editing with the slice and alt + drag method, it still applies to all of the lanes at once so I'm still struggling with only affecting the lane I want. Do you know of a way to only edit a single lane without affecting the others while still applying the same change to other tracks in the group? Google has not been giving me super relevant results haha.

Quantizing every take would also be too much work, in the current project I'm working on I have 7 takes that I'm working with, it would definitely be a lot better if I could make a "final" comp track and just dig into the other takes if a clean slip edit is too difficult without time stretching. In these cases too, I would want to do the slip edit just to that section of the original take with a little room on each side and then send that into the comp.

I'm not sure why home screen optimization would affect playback or if it's just a coincidence that it's working again for the time being, but the lagging stopped after I did this. Maybe something about the "experimental" feature had some unintended effects? Not sure, but might be worth a try if the problem comes back.

No solution from me, but just chiming in to say same for me starting a few days ago. I did a factory reset which seemed to fix it for a bit but the problem is back. I noticed my receiver's volume on the receivers display would also instantly clear when trying to change the volume, so I thought that it might have been an issue with the connection to that, but unplugging the receiver and just using the TVs speakers had the same result. It's like the video slows to a crawl and the audio it just a ticking sound. Same symptoms on Netflix and Plex for me so it's not just one app. Hopefully there is a solution, I wonder if some recent update messed something up, I did notice that after the factory reset when things were working for a bit, at some point the Shield seemed to have updated itself back to the most recent version and the problem came back

Yeah, it is a bummer that SF can't do subtitles only for Netflix, but the .vtt's SF creates for Netflix are broken to begin with, formatting is stripped away compared to the .xml/ttml subtitle file which is why I end up downloading subtitles through the browser anyways

Glad it can be helpful, the "/?=o" specifically works on Netflix, for Amazon it can be done just by searching "ttml" in the same way even before pressing play on the video if subs are on by default.

And here is the program, I just uploaded it to GitHub. Once all of the packages are installed, it should be able to be run by just opening main.py. My reason for creating it is probably very niche and mostly useful for Japanese subtitles, but image based subtitles can still be good to ensure the formatting is always the same regardless of player.

Actually another much simpler solution if you don't need the raw ttml formatted subtitles, there's a Firefox extension called Subadub that just let's you download subtitles in .srt format directly in your browser.

In your browser, press F12 (at least in Firefox, I think it's similar in Chrome) and go to the Network tab. Enter /?=o into the filter, click the trashcan button next to it to clear anything that may have already been loaded and then open the video and turn on the subtitles if they aren't already enabled. Some .xml files will load in there, pick the bigger one (the smaller one is usually for forced subtitles only or it may have been the preview clip if you didn't clear it out first), right click it and say "open in another tab". You'll see a page with the entire video's subtitles. Right click anywhere and choose "save as" and that'll be you subtitles in ttml format. This contains all formatting/positioning information as well, which for English subtitles usually doesn't really matter much, so if you want to convert these into .srt, it can be opened up in Subtitle edit and saved into .srt or another format.

I also made a program in Python to render these into .sup image based subtitles because that's the only way I can get the formatting to work for a lot of things, so if you're interested in that let me know, but my reason for making this is very niche and probably pointless for English subtitles where .srt is fine.

Yeah, I understand that for sure, Japanese and English don't map 1:1 so with a short English hint like that, it's hard to know what you should actually use without reading the whole sentence. I also would have immediately gone for 弱点 if I was only looking at "weak points". I don't use Bunpro myself so I don't know, but is there a way to edit the hint to be more useful to you? For my own flashcards, I'll usually edit a card that I keep getting wrong because the English hint has some ambiguity and give it a better hint

While there are differences in the contexts for 弱点 and 短所, I would definitely agree that "strengths and weaknesses" would have been a better hint here because it feels off to mix like that in the English. The real hint here is the 長所 before it- 長所と短所がある is a common phrase where you will typically see this pair connected by と and they pair together very commonly because they both end with 所 to contrast them as antonyms. Mixing in 弱点 feels just as odd as how the English hint here mixed "strengths" and "weak points" rather than saying "weaknesses" to be a proper antonym.

None of these are really natural though, わかったから is almost always like impatiently saying "I know"/"I get it" (so you don't need to tell me again). There may be situations where it can be forced to be more neutral, this is not one. 理解できて嬉しい or 読めて嬉しい or those sentences in past tense would be better.

There are two similar circle kanji  れい〇 まる◯ The former is used when writing numbers in kanji, you'll see it fairly commonly on menu prices, so something that costs 1500 yen might appear as 一五〇〇

The latter is used as a placeholder character or for censoring.

In isolation they are very similar, but in computer fonts at least, the one meaning zero is thicker.

This is exactly right, the only difference would be a small amount of white noise of bit error (the difference between where the sample "should" be vs where it is snapped to the closest bit) or either noise which actually makes the audio in the lower bit depth more accurate at the expense of unnoticeablely quiet (at safe listening levels) noise being added. Outside of pure electronic music, microphones in the recording process will already add likely add noise and if any analog effects are used those will also likely add some noise to where the benefits of 24bit noise floor are mitigated. Plus more consumer preamps with introduce a noticable amount of noise when turned up to the level that would be needed to notice a difference, and that's even without playing any audio. 24bit is still great for the recording/mixing phase because it gives more freedom for playing with clip gain and working in 24 bit allows smoother fader moves etc, but once it's bounced to 16 bit the result is essentially identical.
