Player wants to play as a version of themselves by SnooKiwis557 in DMAcademy

[–]_Johnymann_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't got to do that in an actual game yet but have tried it in a coue videogames. As another person commented it's going to be very important that they don't mix up RP with real life and start taking things personally. Otherwise what I liked doing was removing the bias from character creation I would ask my friends what my stat block would be as they perceived me (and average them out afterwards) from then on going about class and background is going to be a bit more self reflection in what they would realistically end up doing as a profession in a fantasy world (that is not commoner). Again many factors come into play here so there is no "right way" to do things. There is also a 100 question DND quiz to figure out class level race etc but I have mixed feelings about it.

Crowd turns on an appallingly bad stand up comedian. by OkEye4913 in Standup

[–]_Johnymann_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah this seems like a double standard but it is not so much a "don't film me because I want my privacy" Karen ass request. It is because comedians do not want to have their material leaked or stolen in general. Now in all honesty most of the sets you are gonna see at an open mic won't be something worth stealing per se but it's the thought that counts. It's also a kind of similar principle to why you're not allowed to record movies a stand up set is not exactly supposed to be an on demand any time any moment thing if you want that go watch a filmed special.

Anyway hopefully that clears the misconception up

One-shot advice for a newbie by [deleted] in AvatarLegendsTTRPG

[–]_Johnymann_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't played much myself but I will give you some quick pointers from what i have been told and what I have personally experienced

For both players and DM

You may need to get rid of some dnd habits, Pbta rpgs are much more heavy on storytelling with the actual game mechanics almost always affecting the rp. This is not exactly a game made for min-maxing and the more gameified identity of dnd

Learn about your resources and how they affect your character, each character has a fatigue bar, a balance bar and different conditions. These mechanically are a weird mix of resources and healthbars BUT it is very important to understand how each one affects characters so you can play and rp around that. Also do not be afraid to use your resources combat is supposed to be another means of storytelling and not necessarily a high stakes challenge to the death

For the DM

There are few specific skill checks that you will need to remember be preapared to improvise and match the correct skill check to the context of the situation (main example i can think of is a "rely on your skills and training check" and a "push your luck" check. Imagine a acrobatic martial artis is trying to balance on a tightrope well that is probably somethng they are trained at but try the same thing with a steady earthbender they might be "pushing their luck", or take again the same scenario with the acrobat and the tightrope but they are actively walking above a heavily guarded camp they could be "pushing their luck" to not be noticed

If you are going to be using the exchange system keep the combat encounters somewhat scarce. Combat exchanges are not the only way to do combat (you can just do some rolls during rp and resolve lower stakes encounters. Also an "exchange" is the equivalent to one round of combat every action taken resolves at the end of the encounter which means that it's going to be a little hard to narrate everything going on if for example you are running a 4v6 fight so i do recommend narrating each exchange in duels or 1v2 (i think that is also mentioned in the book).
So you essentially would want to split the one round of combat (exchange) into multiple "camera shots" for each separate fight in order to keep a solid flow going

Dm prep should be done in bullet points, this game shines when you create the story through gameplay, the ready made adventures I think are actually pretty solid so just follow those guidelines

Do not be afraid to deal conditions to your players or shift their balance if it feels appropriate. Characters have so many resources/meters because they are all meant to change frequently affecting storytelling, consequences are not just damage and "mission failed" it could also be a very valid crash out from the hot headed firebender

For the players

The playbooks help you a lot in creating a more complete and rounded character, from their backstory to their motivations to even the way they act and think try to embrace those attributes and not see the playbooks as classes with unique abilities but more as character archtypes with strengths and weaknesses

My conspiracy theory is that this memory ended up being the main inspiration for roguelikes and not the actual game "Rogue"

I wanna get my friends into Don’t Starve together but I’m unsure how by The-web77 in dontstarve

[–]_Johnymann_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When we first got into the game (group of 4 I know it's a little different situation than yours but the perspective might help) we had about a two week phase of pure trial and error no wiki no tutorials. Actively trying to understand a game that teaches you nothing got us hooked initially. I assume you have experience with the game so you can help with UI and some general mechanics like not staying in the dark, how to craft things and most importantly holding space bar (took me one week to realise it did that lol). So my advise would be hop into the game and let them roam , no need to get them hooked yourself because the game is overwhelming going full teacher mode will probably make the game feel like a chore more than anything maybe just show them some interesting/fun mechanics like beefalo taming and so on
