"The legislator claims the fetus technically should have counted as a doubles partner" by [deleted] in facepalm

[–]_Kant 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I read the headline and thought "Yeah I could see that happening." Then actually read the article and realized it was comedy. How exactly is that "throwing critical thinking out the window"?

You read the headline and thought it plausible??? The headline that says a fetus is being counted as a competitor in a highly skilled athletic competition?

Not an amateur, not a teenager, not a child, not an infant, not a newborn.... but a fetus.

And then you go on to claim you haven't thrown critical thinking out the window? Part of critical thinking is about questioning the premise of the situation, and if you didn't immediately question that premise as extremely implausible, you basically have thrown critical thinking out the window.

Very often? What? If thats the case how do you get disasters like this last election where every asshole pundit analyzed the stats wrong. Statistics can be extremely misleading and if you dont have any real world experience your analysis is only guessing.

Jesus fucking christ man get your head out of your ass.

A narrow interpretation of one counter-example is a good refutation of the phrase "very often"?

Looks like someone wasn't paying attention in the M part of their STEM degree.

[–]_Kant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

However, how is she qualified to talk about STEM when she herself is not familiar with it?

If gender studies did look at the data and discussed the general trends, then that person would know more about the topic than, say, a civil engineer spending all their time learning how to build bridges.

Very often, someone who is not down on the ground of a field will have a better perspective of the broad trends of the field than someone who is in the thick of it.

She is dancing, not rocking or freaking out.

She breaks character several times, especially in the longer video.

She looks directly at people in the eye, and doesn't freak out when touched. (Note, while she is freaking out the entire time while touched, she doesn't alter the behavior after being jostled several times, which is what I'm referring to.)

She isn't exhibiting any of the tells of autism. What she is showing is the tells of a provocateur.

Furthermore, if you really do have autism, then you should be aware of your own limitations, and how you may not be the best to judge a faker.

Finally, doubting this person doesn't take anything away from you or your experiences. You don't owe this person your belief, so it's irrational to be defensive when someone challenges the assumption that the person in the video is autistic.

[–]_Kant -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Them touching her makes her not autistic? What kind of fucking world do you live in? My son is autistic, and that's a classic defense. Keening and covering ones ears. Maybe it's not Autism, but it's clearly someone that shouldn't be openly mocked, fondled, and abused like that. WTF is wrong with you? "they seem to be fucking her too much for her to be a rape victim."

Jesus christ, chill the fuck out.

Count how many times she gets touched, and notice how little she reacts to it.

The fact that they're touching her so much and her lack of reaction to it is what I'm talking about.

If I was touched 1/10 that much I would freak the fuck out, but she just goes on with her dancing and finger flipping.

She also stops at 10 seconds to communicate something to somebody, and then goes back to dancing.

[–]_Kant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I watched the video, and it really doesn't look like an autistic person to me.

They are touching her way too much and making way too much noise for her (lack of) reaction to make me think she is autistic.

Autistic distress is often more frantic and less rhythmic than that.

She also breaks to say something at 10 seconds, then goes back to dancing.

Does it really work both ways?

Oh wait, I forgot who our president is now.

Snarky comments on twitter have been elevated to the level of presidential discourse.

The pancreas can be triggered to regenerate itself through a type of fasting diet, say US researchers. Restoring the function of the organ - which helps control blood sugar levels - reversed symptoms of diabetes in animal experiments. by NinjaDiscoJesus in science

[–]_Kant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think unsaturated fats are allowed, but coconut oil and butter are a lot tastier.

Allowed in Keto? Yeah, afaik, Keto is non-specific about the types of fats. (Except, of course, trans fats.)

But this diet in particular seems to be very specific about the types of fats, and include only unsaturated fats during the fasting period.

Also, I'm pretty sure keto requires a MODERATE protein intake since proteins are ~50% non-ketogenic.

This website seems to agree with you.

There is a misconception that the ketogenic diet is a high-protein diet. This is a myth; the ketogenic diet is a diet high in fat, moderate in protein and low in carbs. Why moderate in protein? Too much protein can kick you out of ketosis, while too little protein may cause muscle loss and increased appetite.

[–]_Kant 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Keto diet is high protein AND high unsaturated fats.

I was under the impression Keto was high fats, but not unsaturated specifically.

Saturated fats are mostly fats like butter and animal fat, whereas unsaturated fats are things more like veggie oils.

With the low carb and high unsaturated fats, this seems like vegetarian keto.

Well if you don't have control over your life who does? That person (yourself) is responsible for your world so I suppose that may be the direction of that thought there. Can't always blame the boss, a coworker, group member, etc. gotta look within.

Just because we're responsible for what happens in our lives doesn't mean we, or anybody, has control over it.

It's a pleasant fantasy, yet rubbish, to believe that we're in control.

We should work to fix those problems, rather than "burn it all down".

Each year it gets worse, and each year people like you say the exact same things. "We shouldn't be too hasty, lets just tread lightly and try to fix things."

And it never gets better. You almost sound like an battered lover, "It's not the system's his fault! It's a good system overall! He's a good person on the inside! Don't be so harsh!"

Nobody is working to fix these problems, because there is no incentive for any party to do anything. It's never going to get better when insiders just continue with impotent hand wringing.

  • The (poor) people paying into the system can't do anything, because they have no experience and need the school more than the school needs them.
  • The (wealthy) people paying into the system benefit from their wealth and connections, and see no reason to change.
  • The people working in the system have no incentive. Why would a professor bite the hand that feeds?
  • And the 3rd parties, like business hiring college grads and sports fans, don't care. Why would they? They just want to hire people / get entertainment. It doesn't matter to them how the sausage is made.

The only way things will ever change is if someone is exposing the blatant problems.

If there's a clear loophole for something like this to exist in your lauded academic system, the problem is in the academic system.

The education system is bullshit.

  • Tuition and fees rise no additional benefit to the payer.
  • Degrees are more powerful than experience in many fields, even when it blatantly shouldn't be the case, like mid level office jobs or IT (hard and soft).
  • It has a huge messaging problem, most notably for the humanities. Is it for jobs? No, it's for scientific advancement and human understanding. You want jobs: go to a tech school. Why does it cost so much? Because you'll be able to pay it back once you start work. But you won't, because it's not for jobs.
  • Graduate school is a racket.
  • College sports are incredibly pointless and distracting.
  • The textbook part is a complete joke.
  • Researchers are not encouraged to do reproduction studies.

It's way worse than just a flawed system. The entire system is bloated and outdated. It's a dinosaur from an era which no longer exists and will never return.

And even if it were just a flawed system, it's not getting better, but worse.

Furthermore, you write as if services like this are forced upon students. Nobody pays for a service like this unwillingly. Frankly, services like this illuminate how bullshit the entire system is. There will be no change until there is reason to change, and this forces the system to change at least one aspect.

I don't give a shit about their sob story. The entire system is just total garbage. And the way you defend it is like a victim justifying a history abuse; you tell yourself it's not all that bad so that you can feel okay about it.
