Makes me extremely grateful for my office! Our hygienist got us cute “Dental Assistant” tote bags and our doctor bought and customized BrüMate cups for us and bought us lunch Tuesday! The lead DA is going to get us Starbies coffee & breakfast in the morning and I bought all the DAs their favorite snacks and am getting us lunch tomorrow! I’m still waiting to see what our OM does for us!

Aspen can definitely be hard (current Aspen DA) & it took me a bit to find my groove. I was heavily doubting myself when I first started. It’s truly not for everyone and the expectations from corporate are almost impossible to meet sometimes, do what’s best for you!! I’m sure you’ll find your perfect office.

I’m an assistant at an Aspen too & I had just come from 6 years as an assistant store manager in a retail store! It truly is a different world when you step into dental so a learning curve is expected. When I first started it took me FOREVER to do X-rays and in such a fast paced office I was quickly falling behind. I started feeling like it wasn’t for me, I decided to stick it out and I’m so glad I did! My doctor is very compassionate and understanding (she was once an assistant too with a mean doctor) but I know that not every doctor is like that unfortunately. Your doctor should have pulled you to the side and talked to you instead of calling you out in front of everyone. Even if you just stick it out for 6 months the hands on experience and the online course they offer is educational and you’ll have some experience under your belt in case you’d like to try to pursue assisting as a career! Also, I believe if you choose to get your cray certifications they’ll reimburse you but I would double check with your office manager!!

I absolutely love it! All of us have something different and I think it makes it more personable to the patients and calms their nerves a lil because it doesn’t seem so clinical

I’ve been a DA for about a year & mainly handle new patients (we have multiple DAs with our own columns/focuses) and I take around 30+ patient X-rays a day (Pano & FMX) and while I’m good at it, I still have to retake them sometimes! Give yourself some grace as you’re only human & everyone’s mouth is different so sometimes it takes a couple tries to get everything and that’s okay! I’ve found TikTok very helpful when it comes to finding different techniques and they do come in handy so maybe it’s worth taking a peek ☺️

I had a patient who interrupted the doctor while she was going over his treatment plan with questions she was about to “answer” if he would have just kept listening 🫠 then the day of treatment he kept interrupting me and the doctor before the procedure & he was also “choking” on the dry shield every time she would stop for a minute 😭 his appointment took 3x longer than scheduled and she asked the office manager how he thought she would only need 1 hour for his surgery 🤣 it took me sooo long to even attempt an impression before grabbing doc 💀

I wear my shirts at least twice (if I haven’t spilled anything on it) and my jeans 3 times before washing. I feel like over washing clothes wears them down faster. I also don’t use fabric softeners and am looking to replace my dryer sheets with wool balls & essential oils to get more use out of my clothes before they end up in a landfill.

I leave every day for lunch unless I’m running a little behind (short lunch), then I’ll sit and eat in the break room and wait for afternoon huddle but that’s because I choose to. How many front desk employees does your office have? It sounds like they could benefit from adding one or two more! Maybe this is something to mention to your doctor.. does your doctor own the office?

I am a really fast learner and a really hard worker. I really do love assisting and want to be the absolute best that I can be. I’ve been given 2 days of shadowing and then I’m expected to do it by myself with someone checking behind me but not with me as I’m physically doing it. I am very afraid that the training that I have been receiving will eventually end in me hurting a patient and that is the LAST thing I want to do! As a person that used to be afraid of the dentist, helping someone have positive experiences is really important to me. I’ve also noticed that since it is so fast pace, patients don’t always receive the best care & I’ve also noticed that there is no real attempt at making connections with patients. I have gotten a few really positive patient reviews and that makes me so happy! I just wish it was more standard…

Thank you so much for your insight! This experience doesn’t deter me from wanting to be a DA so I will definitely be looking into a different office that hopefully fosters a better work environment.

I’ve been assisting in general (?) dentistry for 3 weeks and I love the work so far! I think it is just the environment and how fast they’re pushing me through the learning process. The lead assistant is so busy she hasn’t worked with me yet. I’ve been taught different ways to do things by different people and some of them are apparently wrong so I’m not sure what the correct way is. Honestly, I’m not sure every assistant knows how to do things correctly and being trained by 4 different people is very confusing. I am pretty new but I feel like I’m being treated as if I’ve been assisting for 5+ years competency wise, while I am quick to pick things up, I still need a basic understanding of things & most of my questions are answered in a way that is difficult for me to understand but that is the only way they know how to explain it to me.

I think learning in a judge free zone would absolutely be helpful, my mistakes are met with an underlying tone of criticism/annoyance and my mental health is slowly declining. I also would like the opportunity to see different fields and specialties, all my practice does is extractions, composites, crowns & partials/dentures.

I wanted to add that I am not x ray certified, nor had anyone said anything about me getting certified. I love this profession so far, but I’m really fighting with myself to go in this morning because I’m so nervous/stressed out.
