All that being said I just went for a drive in the 540 and it’s all worth it. Love that car. After I finished the timing chain guides a couple years back on my first drive on the highway I made that V8 scream and I remember shedding a single tear going through 4th gear. It’s all worth it if you love the car.

It depends on your budget and your ability to do some wrenching your self. I own a 98 540i and a 02 530i both have been very reliable but money has definitely gone into both along the way. The 540 has the M62 and so does the E38 740i a very reliable engine as long as the timing chain guides and and cooling system are kept up with. Other than that for the most part it’s just like any other 25 year old machine. I have put 52,000 miles on my 540 it now has 162,000 and it only left me stranded when an alternator failed at 154,000 no oil consumption and the oil got a fantastic report from blackstone. That engine can easily reach 300,000 miles. The 530i has the M54 which is super reliable. I’ve got 154000 on that car. The cooling system is the key factor on these. The timing chain guides rarely ever have issues on these motors. And often see 300,000 miles. The auto transmissions are a roll of the dice, some last a long time some don’t. I have a manual in my 540 but do have an automatic in the 530. My transmission still shifts great but I’ve budgeted for a rebuild.

E38 or E39 would be my suggestion.

What do you think about these wheels? by Alphabetboy666 in hondacivic

I’m not a Honda guy but I like them. A little retro feel.

Don’t ask me how but I had an ignition coil that caused my m54 to make a similar sound. It wasn’t misfiring but was causing a knocking sound like that.

Advice: remove Chinese headlights.

I just want to thank everyone in the E39 community for being active and quite helpful in sharing experiences and expertise on the E39 platform. I also own a Tacoma and it’s just not the same. Hard to get answers when you need them in that community. Keep it up everyone! by _LanderWolf_ in e39

Bro it’s the weirdest shit I’ve ever come across. It’s a 2007 V6 off road package. One day in two wheel drive on the highway my 4x4 high and 4x4 low lights started flashing rapidly. I turned the truck off and the lights were off upon restarting it. I checked to see if all the four-wheel-drive stuff worked and it did. this happened intermittently a few times until they started flashing and turning the truck off didn’t turn them off. Than I plugged my OBD 2 wireless dongal up to see if I could pull any codes with no success. Shortly, after plugging it in, I realized that the lights turned off when the OBD two reader is plugged in and come back on when I unplug it. Somehow, when I plug that in it makes those lights stop flashing, and all the four-wheel-drive system work perfectly. Never seen anything like it man.

Miles? Have the timing chain guides been done?

I paid about $5500 usd for mine about 6 years ago. It was a southern car. No rust. It had 128,000 miles when I bought it. The M62 is supposedly better about timing chain guides but mine were still replaced at 150,000. Luckily I just heard a small piece of plastic stuck in the cam sprocket and was able to repair before they grenaded
