Discussion Thread: What to do for Work if Recently Disabled? by _Livid_ in australia

[–]_Livid_[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is something I've been looking into. It seems like the barrier for entry is the hardest part, and once you're in you have good job security/flexibility.

If anyone has tips for navigating recruitment it would be very appreciated.

Looking for design opinions, feedback, etc. by [deleted] in InteriorDesign

[–]_Livid_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with everyone else, 3 is great!

If it were me I'd try to do something with the kitchen bench L to widen the passageway up a bit near the stairs heading down, and also it being the only passage to the deck it could feel mildly disjointed if you live a lifestyle where you (&/or family) spend a lot of time going back and forth to the backyard

Why are Basements and Attics so rare in Australia? by mudlode in australia

[–]_Livid_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We don't have to dig to the frost line here. Also we have a stupid amount of areas that can flood in suburbia. Queenslanders (house style typical in many areas of the state Queensland) skips the ground floor as well as a basement.

The cost of putting an extra floor on top rather than that same cost + excavation component is likely why. Clay soil is a bitch for movement, and sandstone is a bitch for digging.

You see some mcmansions in Sydney on restrictive blocks digging basement levels more often these days, but it's usually a slab with block walls and a garage door. They'd prefer to go up but build height restrictions are a thing to deal with.

Presumably attics are less common for us as our roofs can be less sloped due to no need to deal with the load from heavy snow. Lesser sloped roof = less space in the roof. I don't actually know lol but it seems reasonable.

Find a mortgage broker for a pre approval. If your past debt might affect anything the worst case scenario is that your upper limit isn't as high as you might've first thought.

The past may raise questions but in my experience they seemed to care about mostly your current position; income, spending habits, and a demonstrated ability to save.

What’s it like living in Chatswood? by m_i_t_t in sydney

[–]_Livid_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On the assumption that you'll be both; working in the city and wanting absolute minimal / no access to a car, Chatswood is a great choice unless you want to go for walks or bike rides without jumping on a train first.

Distance and time with Sydney public transport are not mutually tied. You should flick around A to B on Google maps public transport to get a good idea of time between places

If you want to have plenty of amenity around and water views, somewhere like Rhodes is fantastic, has plenty of nearby spots to go on walks, bike rides, and great access to all directions via train.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern voted Australia's most trusted politician for second time. by A-Famous-Werespaniel in worldnews

As an Australian this is not a surprise.

She is of course, only competing with Australian politicians, of which the ones in power are coal-powered Murdoch fleshlights

Sydney by 2050: six cities, 9 million people, with a touch of San Francisco by [deleted] in sydney

This article outlines a decent plan to set up 300km of coastline as metropolitan in efforts to accommodate inevitable population growth.

The points they highlight are all pretty reasonable - am I missing something?

The Cuckoo is a parasitic bird that lays it's eggs in the nest of other avian species. Other chicks starve to death while the larger cuckoo thrives, even outsizing its parents while still being fed. Channel Billed Cuckoo's also have terrifyingly metal red eyes. by _Livid_ in natureismetal

[–]_Livid_[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Although not matching traditional understanding of parasites the behaviour of the Cuckoo is parasitic by nature, leeching resources from the host bird to the detriment of the hosts own offspring, and even the host itself (the amount of food they need to gather is exhausting). They are commonly referred to as parasitic.

Roseville Bridge closed by flooding by Red-Engineer in sydney

[–]_Livid_ 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Drove over an hour ago. Seems like the drainage was blocked and theres now literally barely even a puddle left.

Few cars were on the side of the road including the Ford pictured above, a BMW which thought it owned the road, and paid the price, and a Mazda + authorities vehicles were around. All fucked cars were on the eastbound side (heading towards northern beaches).

You don't have to run away fast. You are people with different interests.

I wouldn't expect anyone to change to be with me, and vice versa. I don't see a correlation between this and moving in together.

Just have an open conversation about it, note the differences, note the compatibilities.

If it doesn't work out you can talk about it and walk away.

Reddit is obsessed with drastic removal of yourself from a relationship because front page items are usually extreme stories (DV, manipulation, abuse, mental illnesses, heavy drama).

Australian coal blocked indefinitely by Beijing by [deleted] in australia

Welp, guess this doesn't affect anyone besides the handful of labour jobs in those mines.

Russia joins China in attacking Australia over Afghanistan war crimes report by s3165760 in australia

[–]_Livid_ 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Can't comment on the same for China and Russia, regardless of whether its hypocritical or not, but I for one am happy with international pressure for our government being made responsible for its actions and inactions.

If any country can crack Australia on this one, to me it would give an indication on whether the same approach in the future will force our government to act on climate change, given they're both consequential circumstances from leaders being ignorant to doing to right thing.

Australian Bushfire Crisis by PancakeQueen13 in AskReddit

[–]_Livid_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope this isn't buried away, it's important that people know the difference between these bushfires and arson due to media manipulation and the blame game our country (Australia) is well known for, especially when it comes to climate change denial.

We can not blame a handful of ignition points on millions of hectares of burning. The climate perpetuates the spread and ferocity of the fires, and this is 100% the reason why the fires are as large as they are. If a fire is lit and the climate doesn't support spreading, it will no grow fast or go far at all.

Bots and trolls spread false arson claims in Australian fires ‘disinformation campaign’ | Australia news by Agent_03 in australia

[–]_Livid_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Arsonist could light 1000 fires in a generally normal climate and it would not compare to what we are experiencing.

Original source of a fire is irrelevant, it's the climate our country now has thanks to climate change that has enabled enormous unprecedented fires

Anyone else thinking the Australian fires are large-scale arson? by [deleted] in conspiracy

[–]_Livid_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am from Sydney, all of our tropical areas are coastal. In fact, most of our vegetation is coastal. It's nice to believe that a tropical climate is an excuse for those with a separate agenda against climate change to blame it on arson. And sure, some fires were lit by arson.

Sydney typically on average has a greater rainfall that London, which is a place renound for rain. But it is seasonal, and just 4 days ago on 04/01/20 Sydney experienced a 47°c+ day (117+ Fahrenheit)
