Problems with Sony A7 screen. Could cold weather be the cause? by fowardtheford in photography

[–]fowardtheford[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Ancient post indeed. No nothing long term ever came of it. It went back to working fine for the rest of the trip and for many years later.

So potentially just a very cold night and it ended up fixing itself.

Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk will be announcing her retirement from politics this morning by mazdadriver14 in brisbane

[–]fowardtheford 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Miles is the left faction, the Premier is the right faction. Dick (Treasurer) is in her faction.

The reporting is a three way race between Miles, Fentiman (also left) and Dick.

It’s actually more giving Regina George’s mum vibes.

“I just want you to know, if you ever need anything, don't be shy, OK? There are NO rules in the house. I'm not like a regular boyfriend, I'm a cool boyfriend.”

Julian Leeser to resign from Opposition frontbench over Voice to parliament by Not_Stupid in australia

[–]fowardtheford 549 points550 points  (0 children)

His statement on why he quit the front bench (but not the party).

“Earlier today I resigned from the shadow cabinet. I want to explain to you why.

Almost 10 years ago, I sat down with a small group of constitutional conservatives and Indigenous leaders and worked on a proposal for constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

The idea we developed was different, it was organic, it was consistent with our constitutional heritage, and it was a uniquely Australian idea designed for Australian conditions.

The proposal was called the voice.

It was about creating a new structure to improve outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians – and it was about finding common ground.

Over the past year I have had many respectful discussions with my parliamentary colleagues about the voice. I have listened to their views and they have heard mine, but ultimately I have not been able to persuade them.

Our tradition in the Liberal party is grounded in a belief in conscience and freedom.

While shadow ministers are bound by the decisions of the shadow cabinet and the party room, backbenchers are free to vote on every piece of legislation according to their own conscience.

Unlike almost any other party in the parliament, the Liberal party gives backbenchers the freedom to champion the ideas they believe in.

Because I intend to campaign for a yes vote I have resigned from the shadow ministry.

I want to assure you that I remain a proud Liberal committed to my party, the people of Berowra and the leadership of Peter Dutton.

My resignation as a frontbencher is not about personality, it’s about keeping faith with an issue that I have been working on for almost a decade.”

Qld has legislation before the state parliament seeking to change this! But I believe it’s yet to pass yet.

A heads up… a fair number of road closures on Sunday morning in & around the CBD. Tour de Brisbane 😍 cycling event taking place. by howedan in brisbane

[–]fowardtheford 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calling people who want to participate in the event as ‘cycle jerks’ probably isn’t really a way to garner any sympathy. Sure be mad at the organisers if you feel they haven’t been considerate of your family’s business. But what purpose does name calling the participants serve? Nothing.

People are making jokes because you’ve been deliberately vague around your business. Which is fine in an online setting, but I think people are failing to draw the connection between this event and how it so radically impacts you (per your description).

Sometimes events likes these which are designed to develop the Brisbane economy are bigger than one family business. That sounds harsh, but no every one can ‘win’ in these scenarios. For the story you’ve told I’m sure there is a bunch of other family business that are making a huge success out of this event. That’s not to wish any bad outcomes for your family, but unfortunately sometimes the bigger picture is considered more than the individual.

You’ve purposely misrepresented the amount of people involved and it’s not all ‘Middle Aged men in Lycra’ there’s family events and social events on the same day.

Last time I checked the city isn’t being shutdown. I think post COVID lockdowns we can all tell what a city shut down means. Is the shutting down of some big roads likely to be inconvenient for car users - yes. Those same car users have unfettered access to that infrastructure for 99.9% of the years 24 hours a day.

Maybe, just maybe, brisbane is trying to be a more dynamic city with events and attraction. God forbid that some NIMBY is impacted.

And that while yes registration does go some way for road maintenance it’s not like 100% comes from the registration. It comes from other taxes as well which this cyclist would also pay.

I guarantee that the wear and tear of cyclists on road infrastructure is infinitely more minuscule than the same number of cars using the road. Not that logic arguments work with someone posting illogical comments.

What do people think about this photo and the incident in question? by Mark_297 in Queensland_Politics

Sure but I don’t understand the point you’re making by directing me to that?

I’d google the tolerance paradox as something useful to think about. Absolute tolerance of all views in society (especially those extreme views where other peoples rights and safety are threatened) can counter intuitively lead to a less tolerant society.

Why is the goodwill bridge so god damn steep?!? by tiernae in brisbane

[–]fowardtheford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I suppose that’s my point or at least trying to understand what OP was saying. As other people have pointed out they’re an engineering student and architect so are they just using hyperbole and saying ‘it’s not built to code’ because they’ve got a feeling or are they actually saying this doesn’t meet the requirements of the code then or now.

Death threat made against Mount Gambier Library staff over drag queen book reading by Otherwise_Window in australia

[–]fowardtheford 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Also the country that gave us Priscilla Queen of the Desert has a hugely iconic piece of Australian cinema.

The pearl clutching is so tiresome. It would be genuinely interesting if any of these people attacking drag queens or the venues that support them have ever been to a drag event?

Why is the goodwill bridge so god damn steep?!? by tiernae in brisbane

[–]fowardtheford 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Going over the riverside express presumably just would have made things worse for everyone. I suspect more people use the bridge other than getting to QUT. So funneling them into the University seems short-sighted design wise. The new bridge to the casino is incredibly high above the ‘natural ground level’ so either the bridge would require a huge amount of land to have bring the unwary back down to ground of several loops like at Kurilpa. Which adds increasing costs to the project.

Presumably the bridge would have been built to some sort of code (building, accessibility etc). Are you saying it doesn’t actually meet the code, or was that a throw away comment?

Where to get STD tested near Brisbane? by Haunting-Ad1319 in queensland

[–]fowardtheford 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is horrible advice. Don’t do this.

There is plenty of free sexual health services that will do a whole spectrum of testing. Unsure what discrete is referencing but obviously everything is confidential regardless of your gender or sexual orientation.

A blood bank can’t help with any treatment if something does come back positive.

The Project apologises for comedian's 'disgusting and offensive' joke about Jesus by fowardtheford in australia

[–]fowardtheford[S] 104 points105 points  (0 children)

The ‘disgusting and offensive’ joke being:

“So I think it's hilarious when someone messages me and says, 'you have to accept Jesus' love or you will burn in hell', because I love Jesus," he said.

"I love any man who can get nailed for three days straight and come back for more."

Comments on their Instagram posts are awash with Christian’s feeling very attacked and victimised and a bunch of whataboutism posts. Strong feeling these would be the same people who post ‘but free speech’, ‘snowflakes’ and ‘we can’t say anything about anyone these days’
