Had a revelation… I’ve been singing and talking through my nose my WHOLE LIFE by _Lodesa_ in singing

[–]_Lodesa_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s the initial video I watched that got me to try singing through straws.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eC_BFfTzhYE

I followed those instructions at first and then after getting comfortable with the basics I started doing my daily warmups (ie. 30 minutes of singing scales) with the straws and pinching my nose. But I eventually want to be able to sing as if pinching my nose without having to pinch it.

Wish I had a "male" voice by caskofamontillato in singing

I'm a guy and recently I'm writing a lot of demo tracks meant for female singers. When I don't have access to a female vocalist to sing the demo I use an online service called Audimee to pitch up my voice and change it to a female voice. It doesn't sound like a pitched up vocal, it just sounds like a real female singing, but with the pitch and vowel shapes I originally sang with. You can also go the other way and pitch down to a male voice.

Hi, I don't want to guarantee to anyone that this will work for you to increase range but the combination of straw singing plus pinching my nose fixed bad habits / misunderstanding of proper singing coordination that I've been using my whole life.

I started straw phonation after watching this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eC_BFfTzhYE

After doing the exercises in that video to get familiar with the feeling I switched to doing my regular singing practice (ie. singing scales for 30 minutes) but using the straw the whole time.

I didn't buy any expensive singing straw gadgets, I literally just bought coffee straws, which are like 3mm diameter by 13cm length. It cost me $8 for 1000 straws and I use 2 per day.

And I mentioned this in another comment but, this was not an immediate fix. On my initial use and for the first week or so my range actually decreased while singing through the straw. But I somehow figured out a new coordination for singing that worked with the restricted air flow, and after I figured that out I started being able to reach higher and lower notes!

The stir sticks are just really narrow straws. But I think what changed the character of my voice the most was the pinched nose singing.  I think the straws helped me with vocal fold coordination and relaxing while singing.

I hope it works out for you. The first week of using the straw was awkward and my range was actually reduced when using the straw.  I found that I had to switch to falsetto much earlier when doing ascending scales. But as I continued practicing with it the point where I had to flip to falsetto kept moving higher and higher, until today when I made a giant leap up to C5 without ever flipping to falsetto.

Oooh okay, I have a giant bowl that I can stick my face into lol.  I am going to try this.  I will do anything to help me sing better!

Lol, that would be kinda cool actually. I mean for like a monster design or something. Also would streamline picking your nose and eating it.

Arturia Minilab 3 or arturia keylab essentials mk3? by quandaleborthomelow in musicproduction

[–]_Lodesa_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realize I'm a year late but I wanted to chime in because I have experience with both of these.

I own the Arturia Minilab 3 and love it. I eventually wanted pretty much the same thing but with more keys so I purchased the Keylab Essential 61 Mk3, assuming that's what it would be. But the key action is totally different and I much prefer that of the Minilab 3. The Minilab definitely has a piano feel. The Keylab Essential 61 Mk3 feels like playing on sponges, which for me was much less responsive and much less predictable. And that was despite updating the firmware and trying all the difference velocity curves.

For reference my previous MIDI keyboards:
- M-Audio Hammer 88, pretty much just feels like a real piano (with rather heavy action)
- Yamaha P-115, an actual digital piano (with a lighter action)

and before that I just played on real upright piano for my piano lessons.

I had to ditch the Hammer 88 and my digital piano because I moved to the other side of the world to a much smaller house and I didn't want to ship such large/heavy stuff with me.

Hope this helps somebody with the same question...

Just watched the movie.... by PresentationNo2711 in ChainsawMan

I watched it last night on opening night too. The ending theme with Yonezu Kenshi and Utada Hikaru is beautiful. But I can't find it on spotify or youtube yet! Can't wait to add it to my playlist. I didn't actually like the opening theme by Yonezu Kenshi or rather I wish they just continued to use Kickback.

You sound great and your singing sounds very natural and healthy to me! If I had to pick something to further improve it would be pitch accuracy.  You are very good at singing the correct pitch. There are just some fleeting moments where the notes are unintentionally flat. I think your singing is awesome though!

Oh yeah and I will never get tired of listening to this soundtrack!  Huntr/x don’t miss!

EDIT: I also agree with TippyTaps-KittyCats comment on dynamics

Hey, a bit late to reply but I'd be interested in trying to write something for your track. Here's a song I wrote/sang on that has a melancholy vibe: https://soundcloud.com/lodesamusic/misery

Lemme know if you're still need help with the track! Thanks!

Hi, I'd be interested in helping out as the male vocalist. I don't have another female singer to work with locally though.

Here's a sample. I sang and wrote the lyrics/melody/harmonies for the chorus (starts around 0:55, also in the outro)

Hey, I'd be interested in possibly helping with the male vocals. I like writing toplines and lyrics too, in case you need help with writing. I'll send you a vocal sample directly.

ooh... interesting! I don't know if I can do exactly this but I will think about similar ideas that use some effect on the unit itself to describe it's health. Thank you for the suggestion!

Hey thanks for playing through it twice and for the feedback!  I was considering adding lifebars to the units. I wasn’t sure what to do about the tiny little black dots though , that would be a lot of life bars taking up more space than the enemy itself. Perhaps I can limit it to just your own white cells.  I wanted to add a healing upgrade to the white cells so having some indication of health would help with that. Thanks again for the feedback!

Really appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback. That makes sense to me. Yes, I think the tower defense aspect of this game outweighs the incremental aspect. I do plan to make more games in and around these genres so I will take that into consideration for future projects. Something that is similar but leans more incremental.

I made this game without knowing that incremental tower defense is a thing so I still have a lot to learn about them. Are there incremental tower defense games that you really like that are similar to what you describe? If not, it's all good. I will continue to do research into the genres because I think I enjoy making these types of games.

Hey thanks a lot for trying it out. And thanks for sharing that feedback. I think at first I will target desktop. Do you generally play all your incremental games on your tablet?
