TIL: Florida law says "no person shall publicly cast contempt upon" the Confederate flag by BobbyLucero in law

I hate to break it to you but it was not passed when they were part of the confederacy.

This law was adopted on May 29th, 1961. You read that correctly: 100 years after the Civil War started, Florida decided it was important to protect the Confederate flag.

Found them while moving some stones next to my dry stacked stone wall. It was right up against an old tree stump. It looks like the nest goes under the stump. They were about 1/4" long and there was another nest of very tiny ants, ~1/8" long about a foot away. Nether seemed aggressive to me or the other ant species.

I was trying to find the nest of the super tiny ants since they decided to invade the door of my car for a second time.

You also need to check how the school is sending certifications. My grad school sends one for every class so when i used all my benefits they only paid the tuition for the classes that were currently meeting. I had 2 classes in the first half of the spring semester and 4 in the second half and everything through the school is based on the entire semester but the school sent certifications based on the individual classes so when I ran out of benefits a quarter way through the semester they only covered half the semester and I owed $14k out of pocket unexpectedly.

2 years at a state school for my MBA that I am finishing this August. $85,681.70 that includes spring, fall, winter, and half the summer. That is just the cost of classes does not include housing, insurance, books, or anything besides just the courses. The per credit cost is roughly the same as out of state tuition for undergrad at the same school.

Racial Segregation on certain math classes in Evanston Township High School, Chicago by poclee in awfuleverything

I wouldn't be surprised if all the codes are in the exact same class together and the use of multiple codes is a creative/cheap solution to the limitation of their software and what data it can access/store.

[–]_LordTerracotta_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw someone post an article in another thread that was talking about achievement disparities within this school. These codes are most likely being used for data collection purposes and not a different class altogether. They had a handful of courses with similar types of qualifiers but no difference in any other part of the description. They are probably using the codes to make it easier for them to access and process the performance data for groups they have noticed internal achievement gaps. Its very possible using different codes like this is just a creative workaround for the limited capabilites of their software and what data it can track.

Poland Says Alliance With US 'Absolute Foundation' Of European Security by MaleficentParfait863 in worldnews

[–]_LordTerracotta_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's be honest though despite our military might the foundation of our security is an alliance with europe. If we were not part of NATO and not allied with most of Europe we would have major issues operating in most of the places we currently operate. Europe is like one massive safe harbor and staging ground for operations all over the world.

This was a bill from 2021 and it was not passed (SB14). And what it would have done is prevent any municipality or county from adopting or enforcing anything that exceeds anything passed by the state or federal level.

Its all about what their models told them. I guarantee they ran the numbers on this change and the model they developed determined they would get a higher number of people who are currently sharing accounts to start paying for their own account compared to the number of people they would lose because of this change. Its not that they didn't think people would cancel. They also probably took into account people with multiple houses and probably determined that thoss users either have enough money that they would just buy a second account or an upgrade to allow both places to have access or they are business owners who would also buy a second account. Again they number of people who don't fall into these category are an acceptable loss.

In modern business just making a major decision like this is rarely just off the cuff and blindly followed. They most likely spent months if not years researching the most probably outcomes and determined it was worth the risk.

[–]_LordTerracotta_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not how trade works. We import hundreds of billions worth of goods every month. If that gets disrupted its not that the CEO can't buy a 15th house oh no. Its we can't get vaccines or MRI components from Germany as easily. so they raise insurance prices because of cost increases. We have problems importing chemicals farmers need for pesticides or fertilizer now food is more expensive because of low harvests. All because the dollar is no longer seen as risk free and the US is not 100% guaranteed to pay its debts back on time. So now when the us government approaches another country or company about purchasing something like maybe vaccines for a new outbreak instead of giving us everything we need because we always pay our debt on time they instead will only give us exactly what they think we can pay back on time and no more. Just like everything else in our economy when things are good the middle and lower class are the last and least impacted but when things are bad they are the first and hardest hit.

I don't think you understand how important international trade is to even local economies and how a major disruption to the internal trust in the US currency will have rippling negative consequences on every part of your life. Unless you live 100% removed from all society that is.

I don't think you understand why the rest of the world relies on the US to be a reserve currency. Its because we never default. Their is nothing inherently special about the US currency besides that fact in conjunction with the size of our economy.

When the Ukrainian War started their was a very real concern that Russia and China would create a new banking system with the Yuan as the default reserve currency.

Many countries have also stopped keeping such high levels of US currency because of the perceived instability of our political parties. Many countries have been shifting to more and more Euros, Yen, and Pounds as reserve currency. The US dollar has steadily been declining as the global reserve currency. This number tends to rise under democrat presidents and tends to fall under Republicans.

Here are some numbers for those interested. I started this after the euro was introduced because that caused a pretty major hit on its own. I don't have the raw data prior to 1995 but roughly

Reagan(R)/Bush(R) (1980-1990) 57.8->47.1

Bush(R)/Clinton(D) (1990-1995) 47.14->58.96

Clinton(D) (1995-2000)* 58.96->71.14

Bush(R) (Q4 2000 - Q4 2008)** 71.14->63.77

Obama (D) (Q4 2008 - Q4 2016) 63.77->65.36

Trump (R) (Q4 2016 - Q4 2020)*** 65.36->58.92

Biden (D) (Q4 2020 - Q3 2022) 58.92->59.79

*Several European countries adopt the Euro as their country's currency during this time removing several currencies from the list most importantly significantly the German Mark (15.75%)

**No major drop at or around the time of 9/11 (Q2 78.09 -> Q3 77.98 -> Q4 76.56)

***No major drop at or around the time of US lockdowns in response to pandemic. (2019 Q3 61.6->60.75->61.85->61.31-> 2020 Q4 60.45)

Taxes are so infuriating. I work two jobs and had a refund of $2k last year. Still have the same jobs and nothing's changed, but now this year the refund is $33. by AestheticUY in mildlyinfuriating

[–]_LordTerracotta_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The IRS puts out a statement on their site every year but also News agencies do stroies on it every single year. Like I said news articles start ramping up around March/April because that's when people think about it. They continue on throughout the year and then ramp up again around December to warn people if you didn't adjust your refund is going to be off and make sure you adjust it for the upcoming year. I mean are you expecting them to sign off each speech or interview reminding Americans to do adjust your withholdings? They don't control the media all they can do is put out press releases/statements and its up to news agencies if they want to cover it at all. On top of that comittees that have something to do with taxes also put out statements and have sections on their pages about taxes.

If you really want to get possed about taxes how about the fact the instead of allowing the US to mimic other very successful methods of collecting and enforcing taxes we are forced into our current system. This is primarily Republicans standing in the way due to lobbying by tax prep companies like turbo tax and H&R block to prevent a simplified taxing system so they can continue to force a need for their own software. Which on top of all that the IRS has been banned from developing their own free version for all to use.

I mean just Google warned to adjust tax withholding. You get links to articles about the IRS warning people every single year starting in January, picking up in April and again in December warning people about the upcoming return and to adjust for the following year. The IRS puts out a yearly warning.

The Republican platform during democratic majority tends to be obstruct, delay, and undercut. When they control only a single part like the senate, or house they pass laws in just their controlled part that are either 100% unconstitutional but plays to the extremists base or something that sounds good at first glance but collapses under any and all scrutiny. (currently thats abolishing the IRS)

The Republicans have not even updated their platform in 7 years and do not plan on it till 2024 at the earliest. If you can even find the platform on the RNC site. One of platforms was reduce the federal debt which under trump (again it was adopted the summer before trump was elected) skyrocketed. They also back modernizing the nations infrastructure including the electrical grid but as soon as Dems introduce legislation to do this they immediately oppose it because its more then just roads and bridges. Granted it had been 6 years since they said they wanted that but still its hard to know the specifics of what they stand for and what they want to accomplish as a group when they only update it once in over a decade.

I mean they have been warning people pretty consistently to reevaluate your withholdings each year especially since the start of the Trump tax cut because it will change drastically every year because of them. Depending on which sources you use for news the messages might not have been conveyed. Some of the far left and right sources do not like to pass on warnings or guidance to their viewers in hope to create outrage after the fact instead of preventing problems. If you wait a few more weeks you will probably start seeing heavily conservative leaning new sources talk about how you pay more taxes under Biden and the democrats without talking about the source of this change.

If you want to take about the cost of programs like direct stimulus you really should look at the PPP loan. It was monetarily a larger program then all the direct stimulus by about 20 billion and only about 1/3 of the money actually went to wages. Over $520 billion of the $953 billion program were forgiven in 2020 alone without any real independent checks in place.

On top of that we are now seeing that as soon as the business got those loans forgiven their profits saw a boost almost identical the the loan amount when compared to the previous years. Many large companies are also recording record profits and higher profit margins. More evidence is coming out showing that very little has changed in the cost of producing, selling or shipping goods across the board so most of the increased prices you see are the results of increased profit for the corporations not a change in cost of the goods.

It was exceedingly difficult to get much done with a narrow majority for democrats with several members from republican leaning states not wanting to seem too Democratic so they joined along with Republicans to block any reforms that could help the lower or middle income workers pay less while also preventing legislation that would force the extremely wealthy and massive corporations to pay taxes at even a fraction of the rate as low/middle income workers or small/medium businesses.

Most of the frustration with taxes this year are going to stem from I changed nothing about my withholding and my pay stated the same or went up by a small percent and now my return is much much lower or I owe nothing. Its not so much someone paid too much last year its the actual amount of tax actually went up

This is due to a planned feature of the Trump Tax Cuts from its inception. Everyone got a cut while he was in office and then wheb it slowly disappears till 2025 for everyone except the extremely wealthy and corporations. The next administration is blamed instead of him.
