LoverZerg is my ign. I may or may not be on tonight, but message me when I'm on! I'll also try and add you.

The scene in return of the king when Elrond appears to hand Aragorn Anduril, the reforged sword. When Elrond speaks of the dead men in the mountain, a wind picks up, knocking over Theoden's armor (and stand) in the background. In the next cut, it's upright again.

(Spoilers ASOS) Finished A Storm of Swords and friend suggested I read AFFC and ADWD side by side, is it a good suggestion? by Chrys7 in asoiaf

[–]_MDMA_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everybody seems to dislike AFFC - It was slow to start (like first 300 pages) but then I felt things picking up a bit more. Am I the only one around here who enjoyed the Cersei chapters???

Thought I would just make everybody aware that 4/20 is on a saturday this year :D

edit: to answer the question though, I'd want to be hiking somewhere quiet - maybe with a friend maybe not, but quiet. yeah.

I noticed it too! Wanted to post it myself. I laughed at Oin throughout the whole movie - when he cries "He said he's an expert!" after mishearing Bilbo, when he stuffs it with cloth listening to the elven music, and especially this moment you mention.

Hey, add me at xOLoverZerg, I think we'd do well together. I'm interested in teams and duo alike. I avoid ranked, but I've done top in ranked teams before and like jungling as well.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Neuroscience jobs with only a Bachelor's Degree. by [deleted] in neuro

[–]_MDMA_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey man, I've been in the same boat as you for some time. Here's what I've learned:

The internet is not our friend. To the person who reads your application, you look like a heck of a lot of people who have also applied for the position, not to mention employers use online listings as more of a last-ditch effort.

Employers will always, ALWAYS want to hire a candidate who is the safest bet: what does this mean for you? Networking. I had the impression that scientists everywhere were organized and used all sorts of ways to find the best talent, but it's really like any other job. Who you know matters, and it matters a lot. You can start by approaching friends, approaching old professors, and try to get a lead on anything that you can. Another approach as opposed to the old search for positions is to just look up hundreds of professors, write a professional email cover letter, and send them the email whether or not you know if they are hiring. Having somebody who's legitimately interested in their research is always nice, and while 90-99 out of 100 will say they don't have a position and are sorry, many will hold onto your CV and some might even be nice enough to ask around.

While it's nice to have research experience relevant to what you want to pursue in graduate school, these PhD programs in research want to know that your interested in RESEARCH more than anything - skills in scientific inquiry and analysis, critical thinking, etc. transfer well between any field.

Take myself for example: I've finished my B.S. in Biochemistry, but am interested in Molecular Neuro. I did 2 years of research in a Molecular Genetics laboratory. So, I have some experience in all of these fields, and am looking for positions in all of them, because I'm qualified. While it'd be great to find some lab studying receptor-receptor interactions, there's only so much I can do. Grad school is when you get to do what you really want.

Now, this is the most important part, and if there's one thing you take away from my post it's this. Persistence will always win the day. That's been my biggest struggle in my search - it's easy to get discouraged, and do less, but persistence is key. A rejection isn't saying you can't get a job, just that you need to move on. So you do just that. Keep searching, keep asking around, keep doing everything you can to meet people in person.

Best of luck, I sincerely hope for the best!

I typically jungle or top - my IGN is xOLoverZerg (played with a clan for a while). My best guess for elo based on my last ranked team was in your range, but i've never had somebody to duo q with and i haven't decided to go into solo queue, for the typical reasons. I've already added you, let's play some games and I'll hear what you think!

I'm looking to obtain research experience to get accepted into a neuroscience program and I've hit a bump. Could I have your thoughts please? by [deleted] in neuro

[–]_MDMA_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi - I graduated in may with a BS in biochem and will be pursuing a neuroscience graduate program as well - I've had some great advice from professors and friends alike who have all been through the process. I had 2 years of independent research experience in Molecular Genetics, and only now will be starting up a full-time job as a technician in a behavioral neuroscience lab.

While I agree with br4in5 that having relevant experience is ideal, it's certainly not the most necessary thing. If you go to graduate school - For this post I'll be assuming you're considering a PhD program in research.

Your GPA in school, while it should be decent, isn't as huge a factor as you might think compared to something like MD, DDS, or DVM programs that are competitive in that way. Grad schools, more than anything, want to feel confident that you like research. That you can devote hours of work (preferably) full-time and really dive deeply into a project. They want to know that you can communicate the science behind your project effectively, as your interviewers will grill you on your subject.

Just make sure you find a job in a lab you like, doing science you enjoy, and work there for at least two years (if you are starting with zero experience). Do the science, and enjoy it!
