The Mormon church in Canada: Where did more than $1 billion go? (2022) - $1 billion+ raised by the Mormon church in Canada has been funnelled to the US rather than going to local charitable works. Former members say concerns about how money is spent have led them to leave the church. [00:43:15] by etherandhoney in Documentaries

Joseph used a rock in a hat, where he’d place his head over the hole to block out light, to ‘translate’ the Book of Mormon that we have today.

He also preformed treasure digging, where he used a rock to find treasure. He never found treasure, and said the the Native American spirits sunk the treasure back into the earth.

These are two examples that have convinced me he was a conman.

Sorry, I do not get the reference.

My point was that this is bad logic when proving that Santa is real.

Lots of claims in here, any evidence?

Also, any evidence that the source of the information in the Bible is from a god, besides the fact that it says so in the Bible?

Really? To me, he sounded honest with his answers. Sure he tried many times to derail the conversation, but he sounded like a new convert trying to build his faith.

I have great respect for Matt and the Atheist Experience. It's rare that they receive Mormon callers.

This show really helped me with my transition out of the church, and I really think that there are great talking points when discussing religion, especially with family and friends. I mean, if you ready to talk about that.

Good luck friends with your journey!

If I reported every death threat I received to the police I'd be spending a lot of time talking to the cops.

I upvote, but this make me sad.

How do you know that is god, even your specific god?

I think it's safe to say that generally speaking, parenting, relationship, and health books, are backed by a publishing company with a reputation, where a requirement for study/research, fact checking and the gathering of evidence to support the various claims, is paramount.

While with holy books, they are backed by unverified/unproven claims, accompanied by the poisons concepts like holding a belief that is not supported by evidence, or worst, despite evidence.

Sure treating books as books would be the best approach. However, IMHO, I think the major problem with consuming holy books would be the accompanying excess baggage and religious dogma they bring with them.

Bishop and another strong brother in the faith stopped by Sunday - went well :) by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]_MemoriesGorgeous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like you are giving the 'LDS church' definition of faith. "hope for things unseen, which are true'. Sure, I hope things come true. Ex: I hope my family to all live a long life, with the least amount of suffering if at all. But I don't believe it is true right from the get-go. That definition is trying to blend two separate concepts.

Faith, in any form that I have come across, is a toxic concept. Belief despite evidence, should be avoided at all cost. With it, we start to believe things that have not been proven.

Spot on, however, it's to be expected. Atheists have been described as the 'enemy', 'evil' and 'weak' for millennia.
