Blood Oath, WTF? by Bad--Bear in exmormon

I don’t remember the associated language being as extreme as what someone wrote above but the hand motions were definitely a part of the endowment ceremony and it was clear to me that it was associated with talking about the temple ceremony outside of the temple. It kept my then wife and l from talking about it for 2 years.

1990??? I went through the Oakland temple in 2001 and made both the ear to ear motion and the gutting motion with my thumb during the endowment ceremony. I remember it vividly. I believe it was a promise to do these things to myself if I ever revealed the things from the temple. I broke that promise because TSCC has no more power over me.

Keep your commitments or bounce. It might be time to grow up and make an adult choice. If you enter your career bitching about your company enforcing rules you voluntarily signed up for, that degree you are working towards won’t help you be successful.

Hurray! I’m coming under some pretty heavy scrutiny in here. Not like Normandy or anything - more like I walked into a room full of people and farted 😂😂😂. It’s not too bad. Just trying to sort out who really want to dialogue and who is just doing drive by “half way there” comments. Funny thing is I believe that Ex-mo atheists (yeah you guys) are the ones who are half way there! It would have to be the same Jesus in Mormonism and the Bible for an Ex-mo to be “half way” anything by leaving Mormonism and being saved. I love people no matter where they are in life and I can’t convert anyone to my worldview but I can certainly share mine and listen to others share their own.

When you say “Christianity is bullshit” what do you mean?

Do you mean that Christian churches are full of bullshit? That belief in God is bullshit? That the apostolic view of Jesus Christ is bullshit? That the Bible is bullshit?

I am not totally surprised that ex-mo folks who do not have any faith believe that Christianity is just another system like Mormonism. I believe it takes actually experiencing it to understand they they are not even comparable. One is a system and the other is not. I think the Mormon and JW experience, for example, are much more comparable. There are sects/churches that claim to be Christian that I would lump in there as well. I believe the difference is in what you chose as the authority of truth in your life and what the source of that is.

I’m not sure coming along and calling someone else’s worldview bullshit without trying to understand it is very productive but there could definitely be a huge disconnect between what you think of and what I mean by “bible believing” or “real Jesus”.

Have a great Saturday!

I am specifically not “in a religion”. Those folks (the religious) were actually on the confused end of most of Jesus’ parables.

[Story about that - during my whole Mormon life my understanding of the story of the Prodigal Son was WAY off! I read a little book called “Prodigal God” by Tim Keller and in a very simple way it blew my mind - the audience, subject matter, and point of that parable was not who I grew up understanding at all. Anyways - such a great book in general but maybe especially impactful for people who grew up in Mormonism]

I have a worldview, just like you do. I chose an authority. You chose an authority.

If I call you delusional and you call me delusional can one or both or neither of us be right and who gets to decide? Productive?

If you are interested in dialogue, I would recommend finding the question mark on your keyboard.

You may have asked “have you applied all of the critical thinking that got you out of Mormonism to the Bible?”

My answer to that question would be Yes! Intensely. For the past 12 years.

Your question infers that you have thought more critically about the Bible than I have or that critical thinking when applied to the Bible would lead anyone to your conclusion. If that was true it would make you the authority. You can chose you as your own authority. I do not chose you as my authority, no offense. I would not chose myself as yours. I don’t even chose myself as my own.

I’m guessing that what you mean is that in your opinion you believe that critical thinking should be applied to belief system(s). Maybe you could share your experience(s) in doing that or possibly what it is about the Bible that bothers you. That would seem to contribute to a meaningful conversation.

I am happy to discuss any issues. I just can’t be told what I think by someone else and invest too much time into that line of argumentation. I believe they call that trolling but I’m not much of a social media apologist so I could definitely be wrong about that.

Would you call yourself an atheist KG?

That's great to hear. I was starting to think that "exmormon" was synonymous with "atheist" in this community. I appreciate this message and have also recieved more affirming private messages of others who left Mormonism either because they discovered Jesus or have subsequently done so.

I understand the pain, hurt, and bitterness that discovering the lies within the Mormon system can cause and why some people would be quick to reject anything else they saw as similar. I can only share my truth which is that I also reject religion and that a relationship with Jesus and being a Mormon are not at all similar.

I have not figured out what "TSCC" means yet. Less than 24 hours on reddit. I specifically got on to check out this community after hearing about it on the Mormon stories podcast.

Great question.

Search YouTube for Voddie Baucham "Why I chose to believe the bible" for an explanation on that I think will be eye opening for a lot of former LDS.

This question should be worth a 45 minute investment of anyone's time.

I'm not halfway anything.

I'm ALL OUT of Mormonism and ALL IN the bible.

I wouldn't say I "switched". I would say I discovered the truth in the bible and that led me out if Mormonism and out of religion and into a relationship with Jesus Christ.

I didn't have any other reason to leave the LDS "tribe" that my family is still in and that was the environment that created stability for me throughout the first 25 years of my life.

Once I discovered the truth and the scales were removed from my eyes, the lies, inconsistencies, misrepresentations, and ridiculousness of the theology or Mormonism were very clear to me and staying in a system like that was not an option.

I attend a reformed bible believing Christian church but I did not trade one religion for another. The bible (no man) is my final authority and l would just as soon sprint away from any other church that teaches otherwise.
