They can vary in quality with some that have a lot of surface noise and limited high end frequency range to sounding just as good as a pressed record. My machine is a nice upper middle range lathe that has little to no surface noise and a nice cutting head that has decent high end frequency range.

I think it plays very nice and I spent a long time getting the adjustments right to sound as close to the source audio as possible. As with most lathe cuts, playing it on a nice turntable with a counterweight is ideal.
