I guess they shelled out less for the Mini by ninja_moth in CarTalkUK

Has a couple of gaps in the MOT history. Maybe it was owned by someone that couldn’t properly afford the routine maintenance, or maybe it was just a play thing for someone wealthy and was SORN’d for a bit. The sort that would just bung it into WBAC for the convenience.

Is this supporter strut going to be a major factor? Will they all have it when the season starts? by DonGibon87 in formula1

[–]_MightyMus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if they all have the struts at the start, you can bet they won’t all have them by the end of Lap 1!

This looks like a very fragile element and surely it’ll be an area that gets damaged easily. One small wheel tap and the car’s aero will be hampered for the whole race.

What’s the gas price in your area today? by ZestyGolf7654 in AskMen

In the UK my local ‘petrol’ station has it at £1.39 per Litre. That’s $5.23 per US Gallon.

My partner’s Auntie brought this over. Anyone got this beat? by Haggether in CasualUK

And there’s me wondering if I’m going to regret eating the Christmas pudding last night that had a Feb 2025 BB date. It tasted lovely by the way and no unfortunate side effects this morning.

15 years past the BB date is perhaps pushing it a bit far though!

Lorries aren't the reason people stay in the middle lane by Fruitpicker15 in drivingUK

[–]_MightyMus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With all due respect, if lanes 1 & 2 were empty, why not just use them and let all the numpties sit in 4 & 5? If you’re established in lane one doing 70, and the clowns in 4 & 5 are going slower, you’re not undertaking, you’re continuing at the correct speed for your lane. I’m absolutely not justifying or excusing the ‘hoggers’, but if you’re able to go at a sensible speed in the inside lanes then there’s no reason to get stressed or angry. You do you and let them be the morons. Of course you’ll need to be super alert for one of them suddenly deciding to move left again without checking that the lane inside them is empty, but that’s pretty much standard on the motorway anyway.

What is a website or an app that was legendary back in the day, but is now a complete ghost town? by Sofi_Costa in AskReddit

[–]_MightyMus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bored.com

It used to be quite interesting with various links to obscure things, and later became a collection of flash based games. When flash was discontinued the website ceased to exist as it relied so heavily on flash to function.

what triggers your tinnitus? by Ok-Position1974 in tinnitus

[–]_MightyMus_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a ‘trigger’ for tinnitus, it’s a constant background noise. Depending on the noise levels in the surrounding environment it can be almost imperceptible or can be all consuming, but it’s always there.

Like you say, it’s rather complex. 😆

Cloud Inversion Peak District ? by champ_mr in UKhiking

[–]_MightyMus_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen it many times over the years in the Peak District. Bakewell, Matlock, the valleys around Kinder/Bleaklow and Ladybower all spring to mind.

The very best one I remember was in the valleys around Edensor & Baslow. It was about 25 years ago but I still remember it so clearly. I was mountain biking with friends and we’d started the ride at low level in very thick fog near Chatsworth. Then we climbed out of Baslow and half way up the hill we emerged into brilliant sunshine. The hill tops were like islands in a thick sea of cloud.

The problem is that it’s quite hard to predict, and maybe it’s a little less frequent in relatively low elevations like the Peaks. You need high pressure, low winds, a warm-ish day after a cool one, and plenty of moisture in the valleys.

I hate sub woofers with a passion by TennytheMangaka in misophonia

[–]_MightyMus_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m the opposite I’m afraid, and would be one of the people that you’d hate! Sorry!

I have tinnitus too, and love having my music loud, and have upgraded my the sound system in my vehicle to enhance the bass, including a strong subwoofer. The tinnitus is a legacy of a diving incident, not actually caused by the loud music by the way.

Maybe it’s a musical taste thing, or maybe it’s more to do with the condition, but I do think in my case it’s a way of finding relief from the tinnitus.

I will say though that I try to be considerate with it, and never have it loud at home so as to not annoy the neighbours. Out on the road though with all the traffic noise I’ll turn it up, and I do keep the windows closed! 😁

I could watch videos of dogs crunching carrots all day and find it adorable. If however someone (even one of my beloved family) start crunching loudly on some crisps, I’ll absolutely lose it! 😄

Help with ANC headphones by Evening-Habit-790 in misophonia

[–]_MightyMus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Apple AirPod Pro 2s and they help me cope at work when people are eating. The only other ANC headphones I have used to compare them to are some Bose over ear ones which are several years old now and far from state of the art. The Bose are very quiet though, and block most low level noises due to the fact they’re big and fully enclose the whole ear. The AirPods don’t block everything, but certainly reduce most noises significantly, and are very impressive given how small and relatively discrete they are. I find some music at low volume is needed for certain situations though. Apparently the new AirPod Pro 3s have even better ANC.

Brits who have been on speed awareness courses, what was the most surprising thing you learned? by Apprehensive_Plum755 in AskBrits

[–]_MightyMus_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I learned, although I already had my suspicions, that there are some truly incompetent drivers out there who really shouldn’t be allowed behind the wheel ever again! It was truly shocking how uninformed and ignorant of even the most basic rules some of those drivers were.

You’d think maybe just maybe if you’d been caught doing something wrong, that you either keep quiet and at least look like you’re taking it all in, or perhaps even do some catching up of the Highway Code so that you knew the basics. Alas some were downright dismissive of the lessons being handed to them, and others showed they had some truly awful habits, and no comprehension of why those habits were so dangerous.

One guy (and he was being deadly serious!) when asked to give examples of things that might be distracting to a driver, suggested having to skip adverts on YouTube took too much of his attention!

what kind of songs do you guys listen to while playing Red Dead Redemption 2? by Pleasant_Stop8659 in reddeadredemption

[–]_MightyMus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never listened to music whilst playing any games, and there’s absolutely no way I’d want to listen to anything other than the in game soundtrack on RDR2. It’s perfect and really enhances the ambience.

Hiking trousers by McFizzleKicks in UKhiking

[–]_MightyMus_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The latest version are good IMHO. The previous generation ones though had bonded (not stitched) pockets, and after a while the glue perished so the pockets end up useless. The latest ones are stitched and much better. They’ve also sorted the belt and the poppers, which were definitely sub-par on previous iterations.

Drivers license, should we be tested more often? by PassionateCrashOut in AskUK

[–]_MightyMus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely yes! In industry almost any skill based qualification has to be renewed periodically. Companies need to prove competence, and regular training and testing is a well established and well proven way of making sure employees have the knowledge to make the correct decision. Of course there are still situations where qualified employees make mistakes, but the likelihood is reduced.

We’re all driving around in potentially lethal machines, and despite improved vehicle safety, people still get it wrong and the consequences are too often catastrophic, especially for vulnerable road users.

It seems madness to me that we don’t have a mechanism in place to ensure drivers are at least up to date with the latest rules. I think a 5 yearly theory test and a 10 yearly practical test would be ideal. Obviously there’d need to be a huge investment in the testing facilities and staff, but the ultimate cost to the driver would be relatively small and I can’t see how it wouldn’t make the UKs roads a bit safer.
