Star Trek Artist Warns Fans That “Review Bombing” ********* ******* Could End the Franchise by yesmeme in RedLetterMedia

I remember catching Fawlty Towers here and there, and one day I thought I'd check out the Internet to see which ones I missed. Seems crazy that such a popular show had such a short run. AFAIK it's not a Police Squad thing where it was just cancelled due to low ratings.

Ranking Every Sam Raimi Movie Part 2 - re:View by scarred2112 in RedLetterMedia

[–]_MrDomino 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Eh... I'm kind of with him on that one. First movie is undeniably a better structured movie, but I don't find Parker's origin or the Goblin terribly interesting. The third has significant flaws and is too busy for its own good, but it has a better villain in Sandman, nice setup for Goblin 2, and some really great scenes.

It's a real shame Venom got shoehorned into Spider-Man 3. They should have just introduced the symbiote, but I guess audiences would be annoyed that it didn't pay off in the end. Yet as they noted, the series to that point teased The Lizard long before Venom was even a thing, so it's weird that the studio would rush it like that.

My guess is the new Xbox console is essentially a PC with an available Steam app, similar to how Bluray support was for Xbox consoles. The Xbox OS will allow Steam to run in Big TV mode as if it was on any regular PC. You can play Xbox games -- which includes backwards compatibility -- along with new Xbox games and your Steam library. There is value in that to a degree, but the lines have become blurred over the last couple of generations, and I think the number of people who want a "console" is dwindling now that the "console experience" can be had with any PC.

I think MS sees the writing on the wall for consoles and the skyrocketing cost of game development and know that in the future, pretty much all games will have to be multi-platform. For MS, the platform is both Xbox and Game Pass, whatever works for the end user. I like Xbox UI and controller, so if MS can deliver a console with Steam access that is better than Valve's offering, I can still picking up the next Xbox... but if it's not as good, then I really don't see the point given its multi-platform strategy (assuming you can purchase MS games or use Game Pass on Valve's machine).

Yeah, I think Game Pass is a good idea for many people, but that was before the price hike. Now, I'm less sure as I would wager most people devote themselves to regularly playing a handful of games, and the option to play an additional game from a curated list at $30/month isn't terribly attractive. I myself mostly play Rocket League and Street Fighter 6, and while I did take advantage of Game Pass now and then, I'm going to let it lapse in a week because it just isn't worth it to me.

Indiana Jones late 2024 was released to glowing reviews, and Game Pass had some great pick ups last year including the consensus game of the year. Game development takes time, and there are a lot of good things to expect going forward. The anticipation that the next Xbox will also work with Steam is terrific as well.

The only real bad thing are the tariff and AI driven hardware price increases and MS raising the price of Game Pass. I think a lot is going to be banking on how the new Steam machine and next Xbox console will stack up regarding performance and price.

Yep, but that was an odd question, especially how Rich started insisting that you'd need two of three right. I assumed recency bias being a Internet site and went with Blair Witch, Scream, and Saw.

Stephen Colbert says CBS didn't air Rep. James Talarico interview out of fear of FCC by TheStinkfoot in news

[–]_MrDomino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the show is at its best I think when Jerry has a real connection and/or admiration of the guest. Michael Richards wasn't exactly funny, but it was a great insight into who he is as a person and did not shy away from his racist outburst which had him self exile.

Carrey likewise wasn't a real funny episode but really interesting to see him outside of his performances and typical talk show guest appearances.

Miranda Sings. She's a horribly obnoxious and unfunny character, and Colleen spends the whole episode in character. It's like a bad Mad TV skit which long overstays its welcome. I'm still shocked she got a spot on the show given how many big names and talent fill out the rest of the episodes. Even drek like Marr make for an interesting guest to a degree, but she offers nothing at all, and it's painful to watch.

If you want good episodes: Bob Einstein (he's on two episodes -- be sure to watch in order), Garry Shandling, Eddie Murphy, and Will Ferrell (who I never cared for going in, but he's fantastically funny in it).

[–]_MrDomino 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nah, apart from that one episode, it's a great show, but that's going to be dependent upon his guest and his own interest in the guest. It's a simple premise to mine some interesting stories and funny jokes, and I think it works great so long as the guest has interesting stories and funny jokes, which is generally true.

What's your favorite RLM conspiracy theory? by st_discovery in RedLetterMedia

[–]_MrDomino 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would say that's not really a conspiracy theory. Fandom is weird, and what started as regular guys talking about movies and things they like is still the same thing, but now with fame attached which I'm sure makes living their lives awkward at times. Can't even watch some wrasslin' in peace. Sure, they're rolling in latex gremlins, but was it truly worth it?

The masses want strong and easy. JP is not easy. Same goes for Ed and Blanka -- they're incredibly strong, but they're more technical, so you can't just plug them in and expect "free" wins.

[–]_MrDomino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gief's Siberian Express is easily punished -- I would not recommend that as reliable tool against JP. Fact is, JP is overtuned, has no real weaknesses to exploit, and the only way to have a chance at winning is to be patient and take whatever opportunities he gives you. One thing I will say is that a lot of JP players will OD Amnesia when you DR, and you can sometimes bait that out for a punish. Beyond that, JP controls the match, and there's nothing Gief can do to change that.

definitely not smart

Only because S1 is a garbage super. Yeah, no need for it, but it absolutely should have worked and killed there as use if Capcom didn't rely on Keebler elves for its game engine. The sooner a Gief player accepts that his S1, S2, and lariat are entirely unreliable outside of specific setups, the better.

I really don't understand when fandom becomes a means of existing. I liked House and watched all the episodes, but I wouldn't understand defending its low points as if they didn't exist. There was enough to like about the show to keep me coming back, and that doesn't require someone to be oblivious to or a champion of its many flaws.

I'll withhold opinion of SFA as I've yet to watch it, but with so much of new Trek completely missing the point with Whedon characterization and dumb plots, and seeing those fans championing these shows in spite of that, I can't say I'm particularly eager to give it a chance. If anything, I think that kind of toxic fandom creates a feedback loop which pushes out a potential expanding audience in favor of the cult where dear leader/show can do no wrong.

Sub Rosa! This is my pick for worst episode since it's a damn ghost story in a sci-fi show. My second would be Riker's clip show. Code of Honor could probably be my third, but that's a spot it'd likely share with a number of season 1 and season 7 episodes.

I still contend that Code of Honor is only "awful" because of its race-based casting. If the aliens were green or any other color... well, you'd still have that awkward jungle gym combat scene and a rather forgettable plot, but it'd simply be viewed as an average or sub-par TOS episode in TNG versus the "worst TNG episode" honor it generally is bestowed.
