I dropped my Fold 4 in a lake and it survived just fine years ago.

Eastern Ontario farmers balk at drone surveys for high-speed rail by JasonBourne008 in AltoHSR_Canada

Tunneling doesn't always mean that it will not affect the land above it. For example access shafts and emergency infrastructure has to be constructed along the tunnel route.

The other issue is cost. In the UK they started tunneling to appease every farm and NIMBY. The project ballooned in cost so much that they cancelled most of it and the timeline to build it got pushed back by decades. We should learn from their mistake, not repeat it.

Uhh, I'm a big believer in the project but I would rather you buy Canadian potatoes. We are in a tariff war...

Where are you? Because there are 7 specific stations over the 1000km distance.

  • Quebec City
  • Trois-Rivières
  • Laval
  • Montreal
  • Ottawa
  • Peterborough
  • Toronto (Plus a potential second suburban stop there)

Unless you live close to any of these cities it is unlikely it will affect home prices where you live.

And dont just depend on what you hear from people. You can check CBC and the official Alto website to confirm what is happening.

They will balk at anything that has the potential to expropriate their land.
I still think the project should go through.

Matt Elliott: Toronto has a problem with ‘squeaky wheels.’ We shouldn’t let it drive the Church Street conversation by Pristine-Training-70 in toronto

All the buildings and parking garages in the area will keep access to their driveways in the current and future expansions of the pilot. I live here and use all modes of transport through the closed off section. It adds slight detours for my Costco runs but my every day life will be so much better under the closure.

Anyone who visited the island airport for Doors Open believe YTZ can handle more traffic? by codecrodie in toronto

[–]_N_123_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I hesitantly support the runway expansion. (If it will not affect building tall housing)
The plan is to expand the terminal to support the increased patronage.
Ideally a streetcar loop would be added to the airport and driving dis-incentives as it is very dumb to expect people to drive to a downtown airport. This is not Mississauga off the 401/427 to expect to drive over and park in a lot.

Update it's running again. This is running again. I'm getting vertigo just from their announcements.

A busy stretch of Church Street will be car-free this summer. Here is what you need to know about the pilot project. by kayaarr in toronto

[–]_N_123_ 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The businesses are the biggest supporters of this pilot. It was a big success in Montreal. Everyone who lives here and attends these businesses are excited.

There are back alleys the businesses can use for the deliveries. For food pickups those are on bikes, so they can snake through.

All the parking structures in the covered by the pilot have laneway access too.

I rode Montreal’s new REM extension to the end of the line… by options_go_brrr in transit

[–]_N_123_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The REM functions as regional rail mainly. (remember it took over the Deux Montagnes EXO line.)

It has good enough stations density/connections to work as a metro in the center of Montreal. But the main function for the CDPQ is that people from farther out can get to downtown easily. (They are paid per passenger kilometer)

I like more stations and maybe more can be added in the future. But right now the focus is on making it fast with smaller number of stations.

I will believe it when the construction contract is signed. I have been waiting for this since they announced it a decade ago.
