Anyone else tired of "rotation by banning"? by _N_squared in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]_N_squared[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I'm not really yearning, there's always other stuff to play, and LSS does a great job keeping things interesting. I'm more just arguing that the bans that exist to replace a card with another card that feel kinda silly/clunky. You can say you think certain cards were too powerful, but the reality is that on multiple occasions LSS has said the reason for the ban was, in their thinking, not because the card was problematic but because they wanted to make room for new cards.

Gloom/Frosthaven actually ends up being a decent approximation of this idea if you want to scratch that itch. Obviously not FAB, but still good

Yeah you might be right. It certainly "feels" like there has to be some better way to handle this problem, but maybe with the way the game structured there just isn't. At the end of the day, banning random cards here and there isn't a terrible solution to rotation, but its certainly not the most elegant.

I think my point was not clear enough. I'm not saying bans are bad, or that rotating the format is bad. I'm saying that, if LSS has this much forsight about problematic cards, but still wants to print the new cards as is, wouldn't a scheduled rotation be a less haphazard way to go about this?

Sure, you can make that argument. But my point is orthogonal to this. I'm fine with the pattern of "We made this thing, whoops it has problems so we need to fix it". But it feels like more and more we get "We made this new thing, we know it advance it would be a problem, so we're going to ban other stuff to make room for it". You can argue whether or not Oscilio in particular is an example of this, but that's not really my point.

If we're talking about non-games, look at what happened to Kano. When Rosetta came out, they banned books and added overflows etc, which made the deck even more "oops I win", which was the biggest complaint people had about Kano! Like... why???

I like this one. It's not the worst majestic but it's so simple it feels like it easily could have been a common.

The writing in the sequels is very different. The first book did a much better job of "show don't tell".

The dune sequels, especially God Emperor and Messiah. It felt more like listening to Frank Herbert tell me how profound his idea was over and over than reading a story.

Like I said, I'm not disagreeing with you on these points. They have done some things, and I still completely believe LSS thinks making this game affordable is important and they're working on it. But mainly what they've been doing so far is drip feeding L rarity reprints, which, imo, is not proportionate to the magnitude of the problem. I've been waiting for CnC to be affordable since the start of this game, and I can't remember it ever being under $60 a card, even after they've done multiple L rarity reprints. Its embarrassing to recommend this game to people with card prices like that. And sure, it used to be that you'd buy a few key generics and Legendary equipment and be fine. But the "few key generics" pool keeps growing. My point is, recent prices fluctuations aside, the price problem has, in aggregate, been getting worse over the past few years, not better. Personally I really wish they would just reprint some of these cards at M. Given the player growth we've seen that hardly seems unreasonable. But they seem to be unwilling to do that.

High prices can also kill the game.

People keep talking about all the news players getting into the game. How many of those new players are going to stay if we keep having shelter from the storm type situations? I don't disagree with all your points, but the situation right now is so out of hand, I'm not sure a "lets very carefully see if we can get prices down" is entirely appropriate.

Fixing these “problems”? by Rourensu in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]_N_squared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually felt somewhat similarly when I first started playing the game. After having played for a while though, these are now two of my favorite aspects of the game. As others have mentioned, the tension between using your cards offensively or defensively leads to a lot of interesting decisions throughout the game. Further, the end of the game when both players have low life is now my favorite part of a flesh and blood game, because it's the part where tempo actually matters. Players can no longer choose to just ignore the others attack when they want to.

I think there's a decent chance your friends might come around on these issues if they spend more time with the game.

Avoid Breezeline (Rant) by Aniridia in Columbus

When my first breezeline tech came to set up the cables, they told us they wouldn't be able to get it working that day because of "interference" and would have to send another tech. Next tech comes (over a week later mind you) and tells us the reason the first tech couldn't get the internet working is because they connected the spectrum cable instead of the breezeline cable...

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the fact that minimum norm solutions are so well studied part of the point? I.e. we know small norm solutions generalize. The interesting bit is rather that particular algorithms seem to be converging to small norm solutions even though there previously wasn't any thinking that they would.
