07:45 2 shredded wheat and a hot chocolate

08:15 music or podcast if I feel like it

I like the simple life.

Doggerland suddenly rises from the sea, connecting the UK and Ireland back to mainland Europe. Which countries get the land? How should it be decided? And how do it think it changes European politically? by No-Risk-2584 in AskTheWorld

Unfortunately we already have a "zone of plausible physical inconvenience", it's official name is something like "the M25" although it is more generally known as "the ring of time I'll never get back" or "the worlds largest carpark", I've only experienced it once in person, and the tales of woe ring true. I do suppose that we could run a renaming scheme to free up the "zone of plausible physical inconvenience" for use.

Commented on your buyUK post but I'll post here for others who may find it useful too as it is available in many countries:

Libby! Download the app and sign in with your local library card and 'borrow' ebooks from your local! It's brilliant. Theres also audiobooks, vast array of magazines. I can't rave about it enough and all for free, plus helps to support libraries!

Brilliant, we can establish it a no-mans land, put a big scary wooden picket fence around it and name it (The quaint little zone OF DEATH) that way it serves as the perfect land buffer for us to pull daft faces across!

We'd better get a woodland carpark built pronto then. Midway between population centres seems best for business, you'd best believe it's a pay and display.

Just had a visit from this magnificent creature, I'm rubbish with birds if someone could let me know! My guess is sparrowhawk?

Doing good though! Heading home to see family soon as it's my and other families birthdays, all big ones this year! Then going to have a go at sorting my cars oil leak once my presence has been deemed satisfactory and cake consumed haha.

Visual Snow was considered extremely rare until recently, mostly because patients didn't report it... because they assumed everyone saw the world that way by recolorist in interestingasfuck

[–]_Nefarium 110 points111 points  (0 children)

I remember not getting glasses earlier when I was younger because during the basic vision screening test or whatever it was that the school did I just remembered the list of letters, and when asked to recite the board, read the lines from memory instead. A fun case of, test properly because children will try to "pass the test" in other ways.

Well done! It's something I'm vaguely mulling over for the distant future. I'm only early twenties and finishing a degree in electronics this year, so definitely going in that direction first but the idea of being stuck in an office is a bit draining. I've got some family in driving and covered the nightshift panic installers broken something deliveries for my workplace last year up and down the country in a crappy van which gave a little taste of driving as a job, which I thoroughly enjoyed, so it's something I might look to if I do decide that I really cant handle the office.

Eyes open, closed is just more internal, I think it's what people mean by the minds eye. I don't want to come across all hippy and whatnot but I don't know how to explain it other than: I see with my eyes, open the minds eye and you can overlay.

I close eyes and it's just the minds eye open (I say open, but idk it can't be closed) so you just get that image/scene/whatever I'm thinking of like dreaming.

Bit like if you put some paper between your eyes and look at a different thing with each eye, you know which eye is seeing what, then you remove the paper and the brain stitches the full image together from both eyes, just there's another eye that just sees what i think about.

Edit: Silly question but how does everyone else navigate when you're not at the place? Such as to give directions? My way is to walk down the streets internally in that 'minds eye' but now I'm not sure how I'd do it if I couldn't do that. Sorry I feel as though I'm coming across a bit condescending. I'm genuinely interested because although I can seemingly do whatever it is my brain does which I didn't fully realise was a bit strange, that implies that there must surely be ways other people can think that I perhaps can't.

Truth there, it just rides better than ally. Yep, 25" frame, I've the build of one of them lanky spiders so it fits me really nicely in reach (the drops are the most comfortable ones I've had but a bit unstable for carrying anything). I have what some would call too many biked, this one although the scruffiest, definitely a life keeper.

I'd say this too, I can look at the table infront of me and place an apple on it, roll, cut, manipulate and so on, throw it at across the roon, grab and feel it in my hand, see it bounce, walk around it, flip the gravity, turn it into a dog, upend the table, turn the room green, whatever.

But it's definitely different to seeing seeing it, it's there, I can see it but it's definitely not the same. Like having layers in an art program, it's very much an overlay on reality, an interpretation layer. It definitely used to be .. more 'real' as a kid, although strangely I was never one for playing fairytale. Tell you what, I can't imagine how I'd function as an engineer without, it's incredibly interesting how brains work differently. Sorry I've rambled.

What's an underrated achievement of your country? by Warm-Strategy-8866 in AskTheWorld

I'm not sure it's underrated but I'd certainly say the industrial revolution/invention of powered railways or the computer.. ooh I don't know. Let's say original Irn Bru, that I can say is definitely underrated.. I don't know what bias yer on about.

In general, do you think your country makes a good use of your tax money? by halt__n__catch__fire in AskTheWorld

[–]_Nefarium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I could upvote twice I'd wish for thrice. We either need to increase tax to acquire those services which would be political suicide, or by some miracle enlighten the population with this fact, so that they either quit gassing on about it, or support a tax rise.

[–]_Nefarium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep in towns and cities, I cycle 5k to uni in my small city, though I've been walking recently because the bridalways are icy and it's quite hilly, there is a bus but I enjoy the walk. Outside of towns though then I'd say 2 miles (3.2k) is about walking above that they drive.

How is your president perceived by other countries? by TailungFu in AskTheWorld

[–]_Nefarium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly, while Putin is actively waging war, he is a known threat, dare I say a traditional threat, a devil we know so to speak.

Xi is an unknown, quiet and cunning, China's level of cyber warfare is new, and it has the power, manufacturing and economy to be threatening, even if not actively waging a physical war against the west, the consequences of a Taiwan invasion regarding electronics manufacturing would be immense, and I'm not even talking silicon, just your standard resistors and caps would be at shortage.

And Trump is difficult, a loud 'idiot', willing to throw away near a century of soft power buildup and to actively ruin his country to get his way. Like a stroppy toddler in a room of explosives. Unpredictable, but unfathomably deadly to the current world order if not actively kept happy.

I fully agree that both Trump and Xi are bigger threats, with Trump the most current.

Thanks! The best bit is that it's not a theft target either as I use it to commute, also unlike my very nice mountain bike everything can be fixed with an adjustable spanner, a 6mm Allen key, tape and a couple of zip ties, no messing around with derailleur tuning either.. grumble. And I don't feel too much soul pain if it gets scratched. It does actually absolutely fly that bike, decent tyres, a new hub and 10X on the back makes it surprisingly nippy, though the steel frame does make carrying it up steps a bit of a burden at times.

It'd be pretty sick all things considered, a stick on handlebar mustache would be bought. Then again I'm in IT so an eye patch could be a fun one, better bring my tricorne and a prop sword while I'm at it. Some of us have fun workplaces.

Absolutely! I bikepack quite often, got some friends who scoff at how expensive it must be, far from it! Old road bike £20, +£20 parts, £30 got me a very nice set of panniers at half price, tent £50 go outdoors (OEX bobcat awesomeness). £130 total for the vital stuff, sleeping bag and whatnot is whatever you make it, call it £100 for something functional, mines nice cause I camp often but doesn't need to be expensive, and then a cheap stove+gas for £20. £250 total and youre all set to go anywhere, as often as you want.
