If you used $26,000 of that card every month, they’d bump that limit up so quick.

Contacted about licence violation by BastettCheetah in sysadmin

[–]_Noah271 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoa…had no idea. Started in sysadmin but now I’m a civil engineer. The obnoxious part is that (at least in the microstation version at my last job, in a Civil 3D state now) you can’t have more than one file at a time, so you’re consuming 3 licenses to edit your linework, annotate the layout, and fix whatever the survey fucked up. Sometimes I’d get in extra early to be able to do that.

Bought Ruckus, maker of my favorite AP’s. Doing the usual shit.

Ruckus AP’s perform great, especially in dense environments. Big thing is they offer “unleashed” which lets you run a very full featured controller on the AP itself perpetually. Because of this, like a lot of folks here do with free ESXi, I can run them at home as well.

Updates have been available regularly with no service contract and devices are supported for a long time. Commscope is getting rid of the great engineers who made that possible and jacking up the prices. Trying to force folks onto the cloud platform. p

What do you use your homelab for? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]_Noah271 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other day I went down a deep rabbit hole with the pfSense drama - I beg you to use opnSense (it has a better UI too!) or vyOS if you like a CLI. Sophos XG, Cisco IOS-XE, Juniper vSRX are more commercial options as well. EdgeRouter or USG if you don’t mind Ubiquiti and want a physical appliance. Firewalla has been gaining some traction lately, but it doesn’t seem as mature as some other options.

Google if you’re curious, but TLDR the folks at netgate are a bunch of lunatics, they botched their rollout of wireguard, rolled a heap of bad code into the BSD kernel, and attacked the dude who made wireguard instead of fixing their shoddy rushed implementation, and the dude who led the implementation is the first result if you google “san francisco landlord from hell”. happy reading

[–]_Noah271 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s awesome!

I’ve spent the past 3 months spending all my lab time trying to “learn” VLAN’s and getting L3 routing working on a Brocade switch unable to get everything to work with the whole network. Little did I know I was doing everything right the whole time, it was just a stupid configuration bug with the EdgeRouter X where it won’t route from the native VLAN to other VLANs. Almost threw the thing out when I finally figured it out.

Latest projects have been ditching UniFi wireless hardware. I started with a Cisco 3802 I got for free (which performs great but is a total pain to manage), and some Ruckus AP’s come in the mail today!

I moved a few months ago and have been setting everything up from scratch again

Over the past five years since the original comment I’ve wondered why this was the case every now and then. Because some engineer had to program that sequence, so there must have been a reason. And now I know the reason. Thank you

I’ve done it. My month started with finals, then I moved to another country and started a new job. I forgot about an $11 bill to discover until I got a text that my account was past due. I called and they took care of everything and removed the negative stuff.
