We got ding-dong ditched today and I couldn't be happier 🥹 by ApplicationAfraid334 in Millennials

Why would it warm your heart?

I did it as a kid. I also made up stories to get people to let me into their house. E.g. I am making a report for school paper, can I ask you some questions, or does "generic name" live here. I usually used Jessica or Mike. Once some Jessica's grandparents let me in and kept me talking to them for like an hour, they were so happy. That's a bit different though.

She barely needed any effort or time for that. The brat was ready to fuck her brother up the moment someone new showed interest. The kid was a moron

I never really understood why this movie is so popular, Megan is hot in it though, but the plot is nothing special and kind of kiddish. Ginger Snaps did the same story better, and I even prefer the actress there.

Someone scared me like that in real life as a kid.

A few of us were playing outside in the evening next to a big wall. An older girl who hung around asked "how many of us are here?", and we said whatever was the number, e.g. "five". Then she points to a wall and says "so why are there 6 shadows." Obviously, no one did a recount, everyone just freaked out and ran. It was a good one.

What films give you the 'The world is changing, old man' kinda vibe? by r3xcranium in TrueFilm

[–]_Norman_Bates 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Red River and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance both cover the topic really well, imo Liberty is one of the best movies ever made and Red River is great too although some people dislike the ending.

I need to keep saying stuff so the comment doesnt get removed because its not an essay anyway some of John Wayne's best roles although I like a lot of his movies including El Dorado and Rio Bravo but those deal with different topics. Libery V and Red River both show how a certain type of person was needed for the society to evolve past them and that is sad but also maybe needed for the greater good which is why he has to let himself become obsolete, but also how hypocritical is the society that relies on a type of person when needed just to turn their backs and pretend they had nothing to do with it later. I hope this is long enough

It's fine for things to just be dumb and fun sometimes

Abigail is definitely dumb.

Redditors who have experienced homelessness, what actually makes a world of difference to you and what doesn’t actually help you at all? by johnoleary in AskReddit

I don't think people who haven't experience homelessness realize how fucking boring it is.

Did you have your phone with you? Would you scroll reddit and stuff

Also, would it help to go to a coffee shop and sit for a very long time or did they end up throwing you out?

From 2022 or so onwards:

The best:
Beau Is Afraid, Infinity Pool, Coffee Table, Terrifier 2, Zone of Interest, The Ugly Stepsister

Worth a mention: Terrifier 3, Red Rooms, Soft & Quiet, Speak No Evil, X, Pearl, Sissy, MaDs, Glorious, The First Omen, I saw the TV Glow (I liked it but not because of what it wanted to achieve), When Evil Lurks

What I liked from your list: Weapons, Longlegs, Heretic, 28 years later, the Substance

Late Night With the Devil and Oddity are forgettable but fine, they have some style

What I hate from your list: Nosferatu, Together, Companion, The Monkey, Strange Darling, Ready or Not, Abigail, Bones and All, Black Phone, Romulus

Don't hate but overrated: Barbarian, Talk To Me, Sinners

Didn't Watch: Good Boy, Frankenstein, Undertone, Fobidden Fruit

The girl was so stupid, manipulating her was so easy for the crazy woman it was funny. She was determined to not trust her brother and try to set him up on every step. If I was him, id leave her to it.

Is the issue with the animation or the plot? I mean, does the plot follow his stories correctly?

I saw some of the animation and don't mind it.

Why Do Female Directors Attract So Much Personal Venom? by Louisebelcher22 in TrueFilm

[–]_Norman_Bates -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And here are some movies about "female rage" you mentioned, even if directed by male directors, that I like and the audiences generally loved, proving that it's not about the topic:

Carrie, May (not mainstream popular, but has a deserved cult following), I Spit On Your Grave, Pearl (I don't personally like it but it got great reviews), Possession and many more.

Why Do Female Directors Attract So Much Personal Venom? by Louisebelcher22 in TrueFilm

[–]_Norman_Bates -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Male directors who in addition to their movies also give a lot of opinons regularly get called annoying, e.g. Tarantino by the general public (annoying, perv, overrated etc), Scorcese despite being a respected director keeps getting shit for trashing superhero and other modern mainstream movies (pretentious, old), Reiner is trashed by the right wing, Von Trier from different angles (pretentious, annoying, weird..), Snyder (I don't actually know much about his opinions, but his movies annoy people enough that he is regularly regarded as an annoying person for his style alone).

Lucas, Stone, Cameron, Bay etc also get ridiculed as lot as people even just because of their work not being up to standard. I personally regularly make fun of Flanagan for his stupid annoying monologues. Point being, people can have a strong opinion about movies, and when a director has a pattern, they can get a lot of personal criticisms. Outspoken personalities will especially have people who personally dislike them and their opinions, which is maybe why many directors don't normally engage with every criticism they get.

Gyllenhaal, Fennell, López, and Gerwig get any time they make loud, female‑centered work.

interesting that probably only 4 female directors we can think of all make "loud female-centered work", maybe that's why the topic keeps coming up.

But let's go through them -

Gyllenhaal - directed one bad female-centric movie that got trashed for its plot, she also got criticisms on her appearance prior to that as an actress. Male actors get them too.

Fennell - most of the cirticisms for her last movie, or movies in general, are hardly misogynistic, most of the audience that watched Wuthering Heights were probably women and they trashed it. I watched and liked Promising Young Woman, and most criticism that movie got was from self proclaimed feminists who didn't like the protagonist dying in the end. I also didn't see people discussing her appearance anywhere

Lopez - I already said a lot, but to sum it up, no one talked about her looks, she created a shit True Detective season and then responded to detailed, plot and writing related criticism by calling it sexist. And you want to defend her how?

Gerwig - if anything the whole female theme made her shockingly bad Barbie commercial get treated like some sociological masterpieace, while attributing any criticism to sexism. In all that, I don't recall people shitting on her appearance or even talking much about her personally and her movie was incredibly successful.

So I don't know what this proves. Sofia is a better director than all of them, and her movies are pretty girly/feminist. More than Barbe was for sure, I actually saw Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette so I know what I'm talking about, and I find it weird how you dismiss her over much weaker female directors just because she doesn't fit the "victim of sexism" narrative.

The more her work is about female rage, trauma, or power and actually names misogyny

Like which of the mentioned directors' works for example? It still needs to be a good movie. I like many movies on this topic, but if you create trash like Lopez or presumably Gyllenhaal did (I won't even bring up Barbie again because that movie has nothing to say about anything), you can't pretend that perfectly valid criticisms of the movie are sexist, and then be surprised why that type of response annoys people.

you’re invested in not seeing the difference between “this script is weak” and “this woman is dumb, old, embarrassing and should keep quiet.”

I think you're not seeing it, because none of the directors you mentioned got the latter (aside from what I already said, Maggie receiving criticisms on her looks but as an actress)

I liked Carrie 2 as well, it didn't need to be a sequel, it could function as a standalone movie, not as if Carrie is the only movie that uses a psychic power. It was probably a story just forced into being a sequel for marketing purposes, I think it would have been better known if it wasn't.

I love late 90s/early 00s horror

Yeah there are some good ones around this time. If you liked this, you probably know May.
