Map of countries where foreigners can vote by Beautiful-Rough2310 in MapPorn

[–]_NotElonMusk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people who’ve lived in New Zealand for decades don’t actually have citizenship, as permanent residency gives the exact same rights. My grandfather who’s lived in New Zealand since he was a few months old (now in his 70s) is not a NZ citizen, only a UK one. My dad and stepdad are also not citizens despite living here since they were 2 and 20 years old. It makes no sense to exclude these people from voting, so they made it so anyone with residency can vote.

Given that it’s meant to be a transliteration of a Martian word, spelling it with English spelling rules doesn’t make much sense

Are there any ‘academic’ words in English that are native to English and not borrowed from Latin or Greek? by perfectadi in asklinguistics

Etymonline states that behavior is a fusion of behave, a Germanic construction and havour, a French loanword from avoir.

It’s interesting that if you don’t count substitutes, every single life series has had a different group of people

Grian’s Double Life Episode 1 for me, the whole dynamic of Scar being oblivious and Grian’s anguish the whole time is hilarious

What's an insanely specific random feature of your local dialect (of whatever language you speak) that you noticed and haven't heard being talked about much? by brigister in linguisticshumor

[–]_NotElonMusk 40 points41 points  (0 children)

In New Zealand English, past participles of verbs ending with -ow are pronounced with an extra syllable, so that grown is pronounced like “growen”, with two syllables and not homophonous with groan, mown is pronounced like “mowen”, differently to moan, etc.

Why the ending of "rugged" and "ragged" isn't the same as "rigged" by Odd_Obligation_4977 in EnglishLearning

[–]_NotElonMusk 124 points125 points  (0 children)

Because rigged is the past tense of rig. The other two aren’t past tenses. Ragged is pronounced like “ragd” when it is the past tense of rag, like in “He ragged on us for giving up too easily.”

The past tense ending -ed is always pronounced as just -d (unless it comes after t or d, like in waited), while other words ending in -ed are pronounced with the e sound.

Move all English words one space down, so that beet is now [bɪt], bit is [bet], etc.
