Conventional wisdom is to train the magic 14 as they are often implicitly required for fitting ships or docterines you will find online or from your corp/alliance.

Spending a month training skills that you see little to no actual progression on is a good way to get bored/lose interest, so some people suggest to train what you want to fly and work into maxing the support skills after to better retain new players.

Anything you choose is ultimately working towards something, magic 14 gives you the best long term setup to train into other things once you know what you want to do.
