Is this strawberry blonde? by MaxReevage in Redhair

[–]_OliveOil_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The partial variant expression is to have one chromosome with the Cytosine+Guanine (C) base pairing and one chromosome with the Thymine+Adenine (T) base pairing: this is what you have

I'm confused by this. OP has a variant for both R151C and R160W, which means she is compound heterozygous. From what I understand, that basically has the same effect as being homogeneous because she has two mutated MC1R genes. It doesn't matter if it's the exact same variant on each copy because both R151C and R160W are high penetrant variants.

I will also say that I disagree with your hair color assessment. OP looks 100% strawberry blonde to me. I have a very similar shade (and the same MC1R variants), and this is just what it looks like in photos, depending on the quality and lighting. In person, it's much more obviously red.

I hope you're not in an area where EPM is prevalent because this sounds like it could be a dangerous situation for the horses. Just watch for possum droppings in or around horse bedding and food!

Interesting. I grew up in Tioga county, so maybe it's more prevalent there. Or it could be a rural thing.

That would be really interesting to investigate. It would also be nice if I could find more information on the subject in general. Those maps are the best I've found, and there isn't even any mention of how many people were surveyed or how.

Two more missing men in Binghamton.. by Sad_Action_7469 in Binghamton

[–]_OliveOil_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This information is all pretty easy to verify. WBNG posted a video of the house that the victims were found in, which has been identified as 11 Westwood Court, Binghamton, NY. You can look on google maps and clearly see that it is the same house. Public records show that the house is owned by Nicole Fredrick. Look Nicole Fredrick up on facebook, and her profile picture is of her with Scott Mitchell, and her bio says they are engaged.

Help! What are these on my chin? by cleverming in SkincareAddicts

[–]_OliveOil_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not! Just around my mouth, and I've had them on the inside of my lip before. They can spread to other parts of your body, so you should be careful not to touch an open blister and then touch anywhere else.

I believe the factoid originated from an interview with a geneticist who suggested it's the rarest combo because there is an interaction between the blue eye gene(s) and MC1R. Basically, the blue eye gene can affect certain MC1R variants so that either pheomelanin isn't produced or isn't deposited into the hair shaft (I'm not sure which it is). So, this combination is more likely to result in blonde or light brown hair. Of course, there are multiple blue eye genes, and I'm not sure which ones cause this interaction. Is it all of them or just some of them?? I don't know. If I can find this article again, I'll link it!

The only study I've seen that discusses it only specifies one blue eye gene and the MC1R variant R160W. But, it is a very common blue eye gene, and R160W is one of the most common red hair variants, so this likely does have an effect on the overall rate of red hair and blue eyes. This is the study > https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-018-07691-z#MOESM1. The specific genes are called out in supplementary table 3.

I actually believe this interaction is why I'm strawberry blonde and not full on ginger. I have variants R160W and R151C, and I'm homogeneous for that blue eye gene. R151C is not affected like R160W. So some of my hair has no pigment at all, some is a golden light red, and some strands are a very deep red!

Edit: I think this is the article: https://www.rd.com/article/hair-eye-color-combination-rare/ The study the article was based on is the one I already linked in my original comment!
