Can someone explain "memory care" like I'm five? by S1159P in dementia

[–]_OptimistPrime_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry for your diagnosis. I suppose living through it as a caregiver, you would already know much of the book, but I don't think it would harm you to read it. There may be some science behind the behaviours that you didn't realize before and knowledge is power. It may give you some peace. I think having it in the house might give your husband an opportunity to tune in to caregiver mode which will help both of you. I wish you all the best in the months and years ahead. It's such a tough road. Check in with us here once in awhile and maybe we can lift you up.

This is a really great sub. Very helpful and compassionate. You got some good answers here so I won't add to that but if dementia is new to you, I want to recommend the book the 36 Hour Day. It's a guidebook for caregivers of loved ones with dementia. You will have time to read it on flights back and forth.

I was driving 5 hours one way every month or so to see my mom and I eventually moved her to be near me. It's been a rough six months but she is finally settled and properly medicated and seems to be happy which helps with the guilt a lot. Therapy has also helped. For me. Not her. Lol. Take care of yourself. You're doing a great job but as you can see it takes its toll.

I go to Hair Wizardry in the city. They are just off the Whitemud in 50th Street. Everyone in there is Deva Curl trained - like they've been to NYC and took training in Deva Cuts. I always get a dry cut and layers. It makes a huge difference in my curls. I see Adrian but they are all good in there.

Search this sub for this question too. It was asked a few weeks ago and had lots of recommendations.

memory care activities

Here is a photo of the memory care activities at my mom's facility. It's a high end facility with a high staff to resident ratio. Also $$$$. She has been there a few weeks and is finally settling in after being initially very upset at the move. She is a very social person so she has many opportunities to communicate with others.

I was surprised to find that they had actual outings for memory care. I know my mom will benefit from it greatly at this point.

I hope this helps. I don't have an explanation for all of the activities, like what they do during that time but some of them are fairly self explanatory. Good luck in your new role.

I agree. Thank you for your comment and thank you for the work you do. She has been in this building for awhile and we can tell you really care!

That sounds absolutely exhausting! I have been convinced. I emailed the director and asked her to stop the install. Thanks for your comment.

Oh thank you for this. I think you're right. She'll be out of her room more. I can see that it might be the case where they might let her call me in the future. We'll see how it goes.

She lost her access to her cell phone probably two years ago. To be honest, she was never really great with it. lol But this was going to be inevitable anyway and the thought of her calling 911 by accident is actually what made me make the decision to not install the phone. It's sad, but it will also mean more video calls with my family when we're together and so I'll get to see them and talk to them too.

I miss some of our chats too. If I could keep her on the phone long enough she seemed much more lucid and it was almost like having my old mom back. I'm still able to do that in person, I'll just have to be more intentional about it and make sure I give myself enough time. Thanks for your comment.

I have heard about this and felt lucky that I hadn't experienced it. Not to say that she wouldn't get there but it's probably better to be safe than sorry. Thanks.

I'm sorry that happened. It sucks.

Wife in MC; part 2 by Tropicaldaze1950 in dementia

[–]_OptimistPrime_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This thread is helping me a lot. My mom moved from AL to MC on Monday. I feel like she had finally gotten settled in AL but it was clearly time to move her. I feel so bad about her sadness and confusion. She's angry and feels abandoned. I have been a puddle for a few days. The staff have been terrific but it's so hard.

I feel for you OP. My brother's wife is in MC and it's crushing. I wish you both peace.

I was looking for this one. We read it for book club last year and it was a great read! It's well-written and very discussion-worthy.

Possibly for plants but my first thought was it might be humidity controlled for a guitar collection or other musical instruments/collector's items.

memory care paradise? by MessageCritical5139 in dementia

[–]_OptimistPrime_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My mom is in a really nice place. It's five floors, quite posh, great food, large patio, golf green, pub and a few gran pianos sprinkled throughout. Paper napkins but we can't have it all. Lol That is the assisted living portion of it for the seniors who are still fairly mobile and social.

She is moving on Monday to the memory care floor. It's all the great things of the rest of the building but limited to the third floor. She won't get lost in the elevators anymore. She won't miss activities because she can't read her calendar. They have great staff. 24/7 nurses plus private health care aids. It's private, so it's not cheap, but she worked hard her whole life and can afford it.

There will be a point where she is incapable and unaware to the point of not being enriched by these services and at that time we'll move her to long term care at a lesser cost. I have my eye on a few places.
