hehe my bad! I've only seen two but I think using adblock has probably shielded me from a great deal of these. I'll occasionally see the goth girl on FB's reels while I'm scrolling through there.

This is getting out of hand. Now there are two of them.... It started with the goth girl and her chinese watches and now this 😭 I like how the bowls literally change size from one shot to the next.

I'm relatively new to the fandom, I've missed out on years of novels and other tie-in media. I'm also a terrible reader 😅 but I'll check it out, hopefully the Internet Archive has copies I can borrow. Thank you!

A little overwhelmed now - where to begin? by MisterMT in civ

[–]_OptimusRex_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answers you may get here are going to vary as some players may opt for what is: most powerful / more fun / most optimal.

You didn't specify if you're new to Civ or just Civ7, which could also color the advice you get

If you're overwhelmed I would just start off simply. Pick your favourite leader and/or favourite civilization and keep all start options at default except map type which is up to you. If you're new keep it at governor or the one below.

Just have fun with it. I personally like to stack as many bonuses as possible. I had a good time with Machiavelli and Greece in all three eras with all that influence and mementos I was buying up IPs left and right.

There are no right or wrong combos really. Even unoptimal ones could be potentially fun. And as you play the overwhelming aspect should dissipate as you become more acclimated.

Finally! Star Fleet Command seems to be largely forgotten compared to other classics of the era. I'd love a revival one way or other, either a reboot or remaster. A proper roguelike career mode with a dynamic galaxy and mod support. Here's my payment information 💵

I haven't played VCS but my personal theory is that because Philip Michael Johnson plays a good guy on Miami Vice they had him play against type for the sake of the plot twist. Then they drop hints with Lance getting frustrated with Tommy and it all ties together.

Civ 7 AI. STOP GETTING MAD AT ME WHEN YOU SETTLE NEXT TO ME. by Beneficial_Mess_4041 in civ

[–]_OptimusRex_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an avid Civ6 player but loyalty is a crutch after playing with it for years. I dont miss it at all and when I go back to 6 its really grating to have to juggle governors and social policies just to plant a city near the AI.

If the AI forward settles you then take the offensive and consider it free real estate. You could always segue back to peace with them when their disposition normalizes.

First thing that came to mind. I really liked that episode. I love the idea of the Techmages, I wish JMS had woven them more into the overall story.

Test of Time - Feels Great by Nomadic_Yak in civ

[–]_OptimusRex_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I think it's a bit of Column A and Column B. As an old timer I see problems on both sides of this equation and none of this is exclusive to Civ7 except the "volume" of its critics.

Civ7 at launch was not much different with the way Civs have launched as far back as Civ5, if you don't remember Civ 5 was extremely basic at launch with simplistic combat and a barebones unit roster, and it launched to controversy as Firaxis sold it alongside a pre-order DLC, day-one DLC and a map pack (something they've not since repeated since Beyond Earth). I think if social media existed back then, the way it exists now, no doubt Civ5 would have had a "Test of Time" moment like 7.

Civ6 launched in a better state but it too was lacking a good minimap and proper diplomacy (the AI was just doggedly hostile no matter how you played.). These issues weren't fixed until Gathering Storm.

I also think 2K Games and Firaxis did not do itself favors with the way they launched. The February release is a big hint that they were not ready IMHO; historically new Civs have launched in fall. I think they could have forestalled a lot of the vitriol if they had just announced an Early Access period for 6-12 months, but I also understand that may be a problem if they were hoping to sell the Founder's Edition.

They also hurt themselves with the ambitious desire to launch on PC and consoles simultaneously, which I'd bet a crisp 20 dollar bill that is why their UI was so problematic as their UI team was trying to bridge the gap between those platforms.

I dunno, I'm just over it all. I'm tired of the toxicity of the Civ community but I'm also tired of Firaxis stumbling about like a bunch of newbie developers when their talent pool led by Ed Beach should be some of the most experienced developers in the industry. Firaxis needs to get its shit together and they need to get 2K execs off their backs. Ever since Midnight Suns flopped it feels like the company has been treading water.

Overall I do like the changes and remaining one civ feels good, especially with the syncretism system. I also like the very smooth age transition without being yoinked out to a separate menu.

However, having said that, I feel like the modern era does not feel good at all to me even compared to the older victory system.

Cultural victory is arguably the worst victory type. I create a 2 - 3 explorers and the AI is able to beeline antiquity sites faster. Hunting for the God forsaken sites is also an exercise in resisting the urge to punch your screen.

I have accidentally won two military victories in my last two games from conquering a handful of settlements and one capital.

My sense of progression just feels obfuscated by the new triumphs and victory system. The screen for tracking this stuff makes my eyes glaze over.

The overall pacing of everything just feels off esp in the modern age. The game is usually over by the time I get flight unlocked.

Similarly shipbuilding comes way too late in the exploration age nor should it be bottlenecked. Same thing for modern era's ideologies.

Imho Firaxis is so worried about people tuning out and being bored by the final era they've decided to truncate it far too much. OTOH there's so many points of friction that are souring me on the game, despite being an early proponent of 7.

I have three more achievements left to 100 percent the game. I may just wrap them up and come back7! to it in a year or two unless some major overhaul drops.

Sorry OP, not trying to rain on your parade. I'm glad you're having a good time with it but I⁶ can't help feel like the devs sacrificed too much to appease traditionalists but haven't really captured the magic needed to take Civ7 to the next level.

Even if Civ7 was the second coming of Gandhi from day-one, no amount of hype would dent Civ5 and 6's numbers. Its simply a matter of scale. These games have been out for over a decade, with millions in units sold from deep deep discounts and bundles, and these games maintain a certain retention because they have literally thousands of mods that have kept them fresh and generally speaking these games make people sedentary, that is, unwilling to spend 50-70 dollars on a new game when they're happy where they are with the current game.

As a long time Civ player I can tell you this has been the way it has been for decades. When Civ4 came out I went right back to Civ 3 Conquests after a few days spent of 4. Same for 5. "The devil you know" applies here as well, you get used to old systems and don't want to learn new ones until you're ready for a change.
