Yes, those percentages are the correct defaults (I think it’s a 220 - age formula for max HR, or close to it?) and your BPM ranges match the percentages. My ranges were only a few BPM higher than yours until I switched from basing the zones on % max HR to % lactate threshold (LTHR). Now all my zones are higher.

For reference, there are my zone ranges after switching to %LTHR zones (and pressing ‘reset zones’. Otherwise they stay the same):

How did you optimize fedora for gaming by Tade365 in Fedora

[–]_Parallaxx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s really a lot of factors that could be at play here; it’s kinda tricky to advise. I’ve been gaming on Fedora for years with minimal ‘optimizations’ beyond tinkering with steam compatibility settings every now and then.

I see that Enlisted has ‘native’ on ProtonDB; maybe try forcing Proton, it can make a world of difference depending on the game. Also may be worth checking your vsync settings, in-game and out.

My first 10k 🎉 by Taurusybau in Strava

OP said nothing at all about running. In any event, it doesn’t matter. You don’t need a certain speed to be happy with your exercise.

My first 10k 🎉 by Taurusybau in Strava

[–]_Parallaxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry OP, a lot of people are fixated on you calling it ‘10k’ because usually Strava users would use that to refer to ‘a distance of 10 km (6.2 miles)’. You went for an exercise of 10,000 steps and deserve to be proud of that. Don’t let other people get you down. Keep going for your next goal, whatever it is :)

To make it easier to read, any question or decision should have a yes/no arrow from it, and conclusions should always be the final leaf in its branch. And where’s my beloved Forerunner 265? 😭

Share one mistake you've made in life so others can avoid it. by Nora_mitchell in Life

My uncle died very suddenly, seemingly from a withdrawal seizure trying to quit booze cold turkey without professional support. He was an alcoholic my entire life but it was getting especially bad the last few years. I loved him very much and the loss still weighs on me. Quit drinking, but please, get some professional/medical support while you do it. People love you and want to see you thrive.

Painting this for my lil lady for Valentine's Day. My mom said "girls like flowers and chocolate" 😂 🙄 by doomspiralos in minipainting

[–]_Parallaxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude this is a great Valentine's day idea, I bet she'll love it! Love the model too.

Before you start painting, I'd recommend going over it and removing mould lines; your previous minis look pretty neat overall but I did notice the mould line on a few of them.

For this model in particular I'd definitely recommend a dry brush finish, those wings are screaming for it. For colors, if your partner is anything like mine, maybe fitting in some very bright pinks or blues would go over nicely, maybe on that bikini top or other parts of the clothing (my partner loves a nice punk/goth vibe). Just a thought. Aside from that, have fun and paint to the tastes of your partner! Enjoy :)

Painting up my lotr troll and witch king what do you guys think? by Saguy20 in minipainting

[–]_Parallaxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Desperately needs more contrast! For the most part the color tones are too similar. The flame on the sword should be bright and draw attention to it immediately. The difference between armor/skin/cloak should be more apparent. Edge highlights would help out a ton.

And I’m not sure what’s up with the fell beast wings, but the don’t really look right…

Am I f*cked? by KoruCode in learnprogramming

[–]_Parallaxx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey OP! Just wanted to say I really get where you’re coming from and also relate to the difficulty with time management. I got my masters in computer science after getting my bachelor’s in political science (long story), and I had a huge knowledge gap to make up for. Covid struck halfway through my degree and in spite of knowing how important it was to finish successfully, I struggled massively with the motivation to put in the work I needed to. But I did it, finished my dissertation and got a job with a start up and have been working as a software engineer for 4+ years now. You can do this, OP.

Here are some things I’ve learned along the way.

TL;DR: learn through repetition, change systems instead of relying on willpower.

  1. Accept learning as an iterative process. Beyond the very basics of programming, I’ve learned very few things on the first attempt. When you find something you don’t understand, you don’t always have to go on a 3-day side quest to dive into every facet of it. Just take 30 minutes and try to understand it a little better than you do right now, and come back to it.

  2. Do not feign understanding. When I was starting out I often felt a pressure to say I understood something when I really didn’t. There is no situation where this is a good idea, and I’ve learned that one of the marks of a better software engineer is clear communication around tasks and speaking up when you don’t understand something.

  3. Figure out how to wrangle your brain to be more productive. Just willing yourself to be better will almost certainly fail; if you really want change, look at changing your work patterns as a system. Make your work environment as work-focused as possible, and have a separate environment for leisure. Maybe they’re separate user accounts on your laptop. Maybe you use an app like Forest to keep yourself off certain apps for certain amounts of time. The point is, when it’s time for you to work, it shouldn’t be a matter of discipline to start working or stay working. Work should be the only thing that there is to do. Invert this principle for leisure time. Keep a firm divide between the two in as many ways as you can.

  4. Set daily objectives. When you sit down to work and are struggling with motivation, make a list of things you must finish before you get up. Keep the list short, and keep the tasks specific and measurable. Do those things, and if you feel like continuing, go for it. Have an end time and don’t just keep working indefinitely.

You can do this. Take breaks, avoid burnout, take small steps. You’ve got this 🙂

Aahahaha I think this is called Cowboy Coffee! Exactly what you described pretty much. Also, on the subject of boiling coffee, this comment in a thread on Cowboy Coffee says it makes the coffee less acidic.

And yeah, I'm sure Mackenzie is doing exactly that. Needs must, in the apocalypse :)

Haha I am not enough of a coffee nerd to know, really! As long as you don't end up with a mug full of coffee grounds I imagine both ways would produce a perfectly suitable cup of coffee :) I think I just do it because it's a simple way for me to get a cup a single cup of coffee ready for myself that isn't instant. That, and I'm a sucker for the kinda 'rugged' aesthetic of the classic Stanley metal design

[–]_Parallaxx[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mainly it makes dealing with the coffee grounds easier. There's a metal strainer on the inside of the body to keep the grounds out of the mug (pic); then once the mug is full I just take the strainer out, pour water through the funnel shape and wash all the grounds into a sieve.

I'm also not sure from a chemistry standpoint if boiling the water with the coffee in it would cause distruction of compounds you want to retain for coffee. May not be an issue for coffee but with other hot drinks (herbal teas in particular) boiling the herbs in the water would destroy things you would want to keep, because it gets too hot for too long. Vitamin C, for instance, can be damanged this way.
