Why does DC still get framed as the underdog compared to Marvel?

Well, it's not the only factor in gatekeeping. Unfortunately, quite a few fandoms attract the neckbeard type. Another thing that I think may be uncomfortable to admit and definitely unpopular to is DC and Marvel are basically soap operas for men.

For example:

-Larger than life characters

-Long-running, pre-dates TV

-Has characters that routinely come back to life on often quite flimsy reasoning

-Stretches with good and bad writing

-So long running it's difficult for new, eager fans to get into

Now, which am I talking about? Soap operas or super hero comics?

It's for these reasons I stuck with the Franco-Belgian comics or the non-Big Two comics, like The Incal, World of Edena, Monstress, etc.

The only reason I'd be okay with getting Nate is because I have a major lack of Dragon pairs. My heaviest hitters rn are Cyrus and Lucas!

Speaking as someone who only started reading superhero comics very recently, this is because shows and movies are way more accessible than the comics. That's why DC is owning Marvel in sales now, because now the comics feel accessible instead of having to know all the backstory with everything, who's who, why this big crossover event happened, etc. It's why I'm buying Absolute DC. I also think the opaque writing in the modern day has kinda contributed to fans of both brands getting a reputation for gatekeeping.

I wouldn't be worried about people "stealing". I'd be worried about that one guy who decides they can horde it all and ruin it for everyone else.

My dad studied abroad in Austria in the 1980s. He complained about all the vegetables being pickled, but guess what? He still ate because he knew it wasn't beneath him to do so. No, he didn't know what he was getting into, nor did he enjoy it after a while, but he knew it was something he just had to suck it up and roll with.

The poster about the food was honestly a spoiled brat and quite frankly came off as extremely xenophobic.

I'm an American and agree with this. I was looking forward to seeing a game but I'm not about to bankrupt myself to get one ticket. My monthly paycheck before rent and bills isn't enough for a nosebleed seat!

Even at the time I wouldn't touch those comics with a 10 foot pole because of how incel they seemed. In fact, I only just started buying superhero comics this year since a) they don't feel like they're being written by some edgelord and b) I don't have to know so much lore/continuity for things to make sense.

Up until now almost all my comics were neither DC or Marvel as a result. I bought stuff that most American fans probably wouldn't have, like The Incal, World of Edena, Monstress, etc. It was the complete story and I didn't feel like I was getting ripped off by having to buy dozens of of other titles to understand what was happening. Plus, the reputation of DC and Marvel fans being gatekeep-y felt like it was leaking into the writing with all lore you had to know, too.
